Season 4 behind-the-scenes video introduces new production designer
By Winter Is Coming on in Media, Production.

Making Game of Thrones has posted a new video which introduces us to Deborah Riley, the new production designer on Game of Thrones. In the video, Riley talks about taking on the challenge of designing for this show while we get a few more glimpses at season 4 filming.

Deb Riley takes over for Gemma Jackson this season, after Jackson helmed production design the past three seasons. Her prior credits include design work on Moulin Rouge, The Matrix and 21 Grams.

Winter Is Coming: Gemma Jackson did a great job establishing a unique look for each important region of Westeros (and beyond), so Deb has some big shoes to fill. Based on what we’ve seen of season 4 so far, I’d say she’s managed to pull it off.

Dany’s new dress is pretty nice; Hubba hubba ;). And Deb’s Australian?!?! (not that there’s anything wrong with that), that came as a surprise, even with the last MGOT video. Good we finally got to see a close-up of Mark Gattiss as Tycho, bad that he looks like he’s dressed in a drawstring bag.

Isn’t Braavos the inverse of Westeros regarding clothing? IIRC the lowborn there wear very colorful clothes while the nobles wear darker ones.

Given Ms. Riley’s past experience with Moulin Rouge, I am definitely seeing her influence in the few pics/clips we’ve seen of the set design of the royal wedding and reception, including some of the more garish elements of the event. More purple and reds please! I am expecting the shots of Meereen and other KL locations, including the area where the great RV-Mountain fight will occur, will have emphasized color as well.

    Hodor’s Bastard,

I wonder how much of it was George’s writing and how much was her ideas? That big lion head for example, was that always in the script? The one thing I’m certain of, is the reception will be in a courtyard of the Red Keep, so maybe they’ve CG’d some walls around the dais or the guests, given that it was filmed in a shady park overlooking the walled city.

I think Gemma Jackson did an incredible job. I don’t know why she is no longer there. And I don’t know how much input this new person had in the design of everything this season, or how much may have already been laid out by Jackson…but I’ll just say this. From the still shots, to all the videos we have gotten so far, I think I like the look of season 4 the best. The lighting looks a bit different, and I’m getting a vibe that what I’m seeing in these season 4 videos is coming much closer to what was in my mind while reading the books. So who knows. What seems like impossible shoes to fill…might wind up turning out even better.

    Valyrian Plastic,

Well, we know she was given some amazing stuff to work with. Hopefully, she visualizes GRRM’s descriptive words well! I wonder if Ms. Jackson and D&D had a conflict with color on the show…especially given that there will be some amazing set design and color considerations to reflect/supplement/bolster the storyline from here on out. I hope Ms. Riley is a good fit!

This BTS does confirm/reveal quite a few things:
    - Dominic Carter is indeed back as Slynt, and has a scene with Thorne talking to the men of the Watch (including a not-so-happy Jon Snow at 0:32
    - The scene at 0:54 does seem to imply we’ll see Jorah be banished this season after all (which means way less Iain Glen next season)
    - Lysa in front of the Moon “Door” at 1:27
    - Braavos at 1:56. Looking very nice.

Considering they never wear black dressesin King’s Landing, I would think it might be something people could pick up on. Also, most people wear black to funerals in the real world. I don’t know, maybe since I know what’s happening it’s easier to pick up on that stuff haha.

I think after they all saw him order Ned’s execution, they went in droves to the wikis to find out exactly when (as George actually put it in at least one interview) that little shit died. Morgan,

The vast majority of show fans don’t even watch production videos, and certainly don’t pause every few seconds to analyse certain shots. Dedicated show only fans like those over at TWOP might make the connection, but they generally avoid such videos to remain unspoiled. Add to this, the fact that most people who haven’t read the books wouldn’t even make the connection even if they did look carefully, there’s almost no chance this will spoil people.

Had a question/thought. I just saw this picture of the Iron Bankers- http://wicnet.tumblr.com/image/75617641760- their faces look weird, and it kind of seems like they are wearing grotesque masks.

Is that how others see it too?

I also notice a guard (?) in robes who seems to have his face covered.

I’m definitely getting the Faceless Man connection here.

Edit- I see that apparently this is concept art rather than a photo, which explains some of the strangeness, but still, I’m getting the sense that the bankers wear masks.

Where the hell are the tokars? Daenerys needs to wear her tokars to blend in with Meereen society. I guess they could hold off on them until she officially becomes queen of Meereen by the end of this season, but we didn’t see any in Astapor or Yunkai. Just boring old sashes and robes. Same when she was in Qarth.

I’m sorry but loosing Gemma Jackson is not a good thing. This one can’t be just swept away with “oh well”…you can’t polish a turd no matter how hard you try…

Ms. Jackson has been with the show since the beginning and set both the tone and the look of the show, for which I am and always be grateful, because the work she did translating the texture and feel of George RR Martin’s complex world from the page to the screen has been nothing short of phenomenal!

Unless she decided to retire for some reason, her departure from the show does not bode well…just saying. This is showbusiness and people do move on, or leave a show, movie or other productions for whatever reason. I sincerely hope that this was not money because that would have been exceedingly stupid to lose her for that reason. She earned and deserved every penny she made on this show. I have seldom seen such a high quality for a production design on a television series, even for HBO. To say that Gemma Jackson is talented is an understatement. She has amassed an impressive list of credits, is universally liked and acclaimed in the business and the fact that GoT had scored her for its production was trully a win-win.

So I am miffed as to her departure, because I have not yet seen any future credits or projects. As a fan I do think that we deserve some explanation. I’m not looking for every single detail and all the nitty-gritty behind the scenes, but some word and a big freaking thank you from all of us and everyone at HBO for her fantastic work on this show. We often drool over the people that front the show, but forget the people behind the scenes who are dedicated to the tedium and backbreaking work needed to bring this show to life from the lowliest assistant to the production designer etc.

As for Ms. Deborah Riley, with all due respect, her “filling some big shoes” doesn’t even enter into the equation, because she cannot! The best she can do is continue the work Gemma Jackson did and perhaps try to fill in with some of her own ideas and vision, because if she tries to immitate, failure will result. As for Ms. Riley’s credits, I am sorry but they are not really that impressive.

If “Moulin Rouge” is suppossed to be a point of referrence and proof, not thank you! The last thing I want to see is GoT look anywhere near as garish and kitchy as “Moulin Rouge”. I hate Baz Luhrman and his over-the-top, overwrought, but empty and scouless movies! I’d rather be roofied, take a hit of acid, while eating pot brownies, having a rootcanal done and watch all of Nicholas Cage’s movies from the last decad, than watch a Baz Lurhman movie…”Moulin Rouge” included!

I am sorry if I come off sounding too harsh, disrespectful and all around douchy. I realize that at the end of the day HBO and all the people involved in making the show, or George RR Martin and his ASOIF novels, don’t owe me or anyone anykind of explanation, after all it is their work, and armchair quarterbacks such as myself are a dime a dozen.

But as a fan of both the novels and the show, who has chosen, and rightly so, to invest a considerable amount of time and money in both, some of these decisions could be better explained, because let’s be honest, at certain times along the road, HBO and co. have not always had the best communications with their fans…

I hope Ms. Riley works out for the show and that the bar, set soo high by Gemma Jackson and her unique vision, will be met once again in the new season as well as, fingers crossed, future ones.

Just as an aside note, HBOCanada is re-airing Tom Hooper’s (produced by Playtone’s Tom Hanks, Garry Goetzman and Steven Spielberg) monumental miniseries “John Adams”. Gemma Jackson was responsible for the production design on that wonderful, amazing piece of television. And what a visual feast! In contrast I’ve watched with a tired indifference Michael Bay’s newest brainfart “Black Sails” where the production values seem to have been begotten from a design degree from the University Of Phoenix, while the costumes look like any generic Costume-R-Us supply store purchase…

That is the difference that talent and experience bring to a production, and Gemma Jackson had them in spades…I am sorry to see her gone and I will miss her presence and guiding hand on the show! Thank you Ms. Jackson!

    KG,

I think there is a decent point about Dany dressing to blend in which if it does happen, will probably be after she marries Hizidar (just like in the book when she wore the “bunny ears”)

The show is generally “blander” in terms of styling (sometimes too bland IMO), but I really can’t blame them for toning down Essos. Everything about how Martin characterizes the people of Essos from dress sense to food preferences to cultural practices screams “these are two-dimensional caricatures and you don’t have to care about them”.

Hair teased in weird shapes isn’t a fantasy element, it’s just freaky and it made me cringe everytime I read a description of a Ghiscari character.

Also I didn’t notice this till I looked at an article about the got costumes, but people in Qarth all have insects made out of gemstones and metal sewn all over their costumes and into their hair, and did you look at Xaro’s robes? Definitely eccentric.

  56. Jordan

    House Mormont,

Yeah, it’s not like people from Essos don’t dress differently than people of Westeros on the show, it’s just that their costumes are somewhat less over-the-top.

Something that struck me, is that Oberyn’s outfit is sort of similar to the way Xaro dressed, and from what we’ve seen so far, Ellaria’s clothing also looks more Essosi (is that a word?)

Edit- On another topic, I am curious about those skulls and the turtle shell (although I have a good idea about the former). Not sure where I’m getting this idea, but I could swear I read something earlier commenting on them being at the Iron Bank set.

    Brian,

Book spoiler RE the skulls (can’t remember anything book related about turtle shells):

There’s an elite mercenary company called the Golden Company, that was founded by someone from the Blackfyres- bastards of one of the Targaryean kings, and pretenders to the throne. The Golden Company covers the skulls of their leaders in gold when they die, and keeps a collection of them. With that said, not sure what gold-plated skulls would be doing outside of the Golden Company headquarters.

    dragonreborn,

That does make sense. Still would be cool if the “higher ups” were masked. From the concept art, it looks like Tycho is talking with his superiors, which would make for a cool scene, particularly if they were wearing creepy masks and accompanied by guards hiding their faces.

I support that theory that the Faceless Men are behind the Iron Bank, and it would be cool to get some hints confirming this.

There were loads of turtle shells during Tyrion’s ADWD arc, although they were still attached to the turtles’ bodies at the time ;). On that note, even if they begin Tyrion’s Essos journey before season 5, it’s still too early to introduce the Golden Company. It’s more likely they’re being weathered for a completely different bit of set dressing.

I’m just hoping they’ll keep the turtles, because it adds to the prehistoric/fantasy fauna. 70 million years ago, there really were turtles the size of small rowing boats, called Archelon, while Direwolves and Mammoths went extinct 10,000 years ago (and some have even speculated that the unicorns of Skagos are actually, woolly rhinos). The fantasy element is greater when things are bigger, more exotic. Essos is the size of Eurasia, inhabited by camels, elephants, crocodiles and more, we don’t want casual viewers to think the only creatures living there are horses and manticores (and dragons) after all.

    Nick_Scryer,

So that’s Littlefinger in the Moon Door scene? I couldn’t find him and I thought they’re gonna ruin the scene by rewriting it and have Sansa “accidentally” push her or something similarly stupid. I’m so glad it doesn’t look like there’s a change there. Phew!

Speaking of this scene, it seems that Sansa is still wearing her S3 clothes. Can’t they give the poor girl some new clothes already? Dany looks like she’ll take Margaery’s “revealing” role this season (not that she was looking particularly prudish in the past season, but you get my point), but it’s still a new dress. I think it’s fair to give every one a new wardrobe. Even if it’s a mourning one. Or, in Jaime’s case, a hobo’s one.

    KG,

I shouldn’t have to go anywhere else to watch what was written in the books. This isn’t a grim dark and edgy Viking show; it is a fantasy setting. The Ghis hair is one example, there are dozens of other shit they completely dumb or tone down for no particular reason other than for simplicity’s sake.

Like the fact Cersei seems to know NO OTHER COLOR than red. I think the last time we saw her in a dress that wasn’t red was sometime during S1. Because “hurrr durr don’t forget she’s Lannister~”

A show can be a fantasy genre and not have extreme unrealistic fashions and hairstyles. It’s a view like that that stops people watching the show. Have you seen the Hunger Games? The hairstyles don’t add to the story.

Why were people worried about his hair colour? The guy has had blonde hair since day 1. Most people with natural blonde hair tend to have darker roots, that’s why it looks more brownish when you cut it, but it’s still the same colour: ash blonde. It makes no sense to take a blonde actor and dye his hair brown/black when the character requires blonde hair.

Now I can somewhat see complaints about Tyrion’s hair coloring.

Edit- Confusingly, “ash blond” actually means “very pale blond hair” (so, like Dany and Hodor have), not blond hair with dark notes (I think that’s called either “dirty blond” or “sandy blond”)

Concerning fantasy elements like the ghiscari hair: There is always the possibility to tone it down without leaving it out completely. Best example was Jaqen’s hair in season 2. That was well done, in my opinion.
I’ll admit that wings made out of hair sound incredibly silly, but they could do something like a “wolverine” hairstyle that resembles wings. That would give the person an extravagant look without ruining the atmosphere too much.

Jordan: y than people of Westeros on the show, it’s just that their costumes are somewhat less over-the-top.

Something that struck me, is that Oberyn’s outfit is sort of similar to the way Xaro dressed, and from what we’ve seen so far, Ellaria’s clothing also looks more Essosi (is that a word?)

No. There is no such think as “Essosi” that is absurd. That’s like saying “Eurasian”. The design motif behind the Dornish is that they’re a bit more light and revealing because it is hotter in Dorne. Xaro’s Qartheen clothing, in contrast, has a sort of high collar, but not a plunging neckline.

You are bad at analyzing this.

I’m not a fan of Daenerys’ new dress, to be honest.

The most interesting thing for me in this trailer is Jorah standing before Daenerys. We know that he is still around when the farmer presents his child’s bones, but this shot implies that he will be banished this season. Here’s some things that we know:
    - The farmer scene is in an Alex Graves episode (2, 3, 8 or 10)
    - Barristan does not know that Jorah was a spy.
Keeping that in mind here’s how I think it could all go down:
Over the season the build up the dragons getting more aggressive towards people, and Jorah saying they should be chained. The child bones scene happens in ep 8. In the finale Jorah goes behind Daenerys’ back and has the dragons chained. She actually agrees with the decision, but because he went behind her back and repeatedly opposed her publicly she reluctantly banishes him.

That the leaves the shadow war with the sons of the harpy and building up the relationships with Daario and Hizdahr for the first half of S5.

*aka looking pretty much like a mix of Hollywoo, Euro(trash) jet set and the stuff you see in high fashion catwalks – the most ridiculous outfits in the Catching Fire movie were actually designed by famous high fashion designers – not for the movie, they just agreed for them to be used in the movie.

    Annara Snow,
Now that you mention it, it would line up with how they have portrayed home so far :P. I’m just trying to think of the ways they can get around the problem of not having Barristan on the small council in the show.

    Ozymandias,
There’s a great thread on this over at Westeros. My hopes:
    4×01: The Red Viper – Oberyn’s introduction.
4×02: Hear Me Roar – Ironic because Joffrey chokes to death.
4×03: Growing Strong – D&D aren’t exactly subtle when it comes to mysteries, so I think they will make it obvious that the Tyrell’s were behind Joffrey’s death.

Mid season – because we don’t know when exactly things will happen, I won’t bother attaching them to episodes. But here are some possible titles:
A Thousand Eyes and One – Bran meets Bloodraven
Breaker of Chains – Daenerys takes Meereen
Oathkeeper – Jaime gives Brienne his sword
The Gift of Mercy – Arya abandons Sandor
Turncloak, Remember You Name, It Rhymes with freak/meek/weak/etc or one of the many other possible Theon related titles – the Moat Cailin incident.

4×08: Say Her Name – Oberyn vs Gregor
4×09: I would accept any of a number of titles for this one: The Shield that Guards the Realms of Men, Sword in the Darkness, Watchers on the Wall, The Horn of Winter OR Ours Is the Fury. All would be good.
4×10: Only a Cat of a Different Coat – Tyrion is opposed to the other Lannisters, “Only Cat”, Stoneheart reveal. It also is from The Rains of Castamere, in which Catelyn died.

    2- Widow’s Wail
3- Kingslayer- Tyrion gets thrown into prison and everyone he trusted leaves him behind, the Funeral, Jamie and Cersie’s on-dead-son twincest, Sansa escapes with Littlefinger and asks him who killed Joffrey
4- Vengeance- the Red Viper speaking with Tyrion or Jamie about vengeance, Jon attacks the mutineers in Craster’s Keep, Tyrion’s first trial
5- ???- Reek and Ramsay set off for the Riverlands (after a Yara?), Sansa arrives at the Eyrie and Littlefinger weds Lysa, Dany and Jorah kiss but she chooses Daario
6- Oathkeeper- Jamie gives Brienne Oathkeeper and sends her in search of Sansa
7- Trial- final, big trial, he requests a trial by battle, Arya and the Hound fight someone/a and the Hound gets wounded and Daenerys takes Meereen, Brienne leaves King’s Landing after being joined by Podrick

Polliver is still alive though, and has Needle. Arya when stabbing might not make a distinction.

He also is credited (on imdb so maybe not really) as appearing in the first episode as well as whenever the fight is, I guess to refresh the audience’s memory and show him hanging out with the Mountain. We would need exposition from Arya explaining to the Hound his brother’s tortures, and have her focus on that line in particular. I admit its inclusion may be a long shot.

I’ll throw my hat in the episode name game…

The King’s PeaceMainly set-up. Introduces Oberyn, Ellaria, and Mace Tyrell. Balon’s death ends the episode.

The Stranger (I also like The Bells of Baelor) – Completely focused on King’s Landing. Ends with Joffrey’s death and Tyrion being arrested.

King’s BloodAftermath of the Purple Wedding, including Sansa’s escape. Daario fights the champion of Meereen.

ChainsTyrion’s trial begins, and the slaves of Meereen revolt.

    Rhymes With FreakTheon/Yara/Ramsay heavy episode.

A Thousand Eyes And OneEpisode ends on a cliffhanger, with Bran meeting Bloodraven.

The GiftBran explores his powers; Arya & The Hound get into a fight at an inn; Oberyn offers to be Tyrion’s champion to end the episode.

EliaArya leaves Sandor to ‘die’. The episode ends with Oberyn losing the duel with The Mountain, and Tyrion being condemned to death.

The Shield That Guards the Realms of MenThe battle at the Wall, featuring the deaths of either Grenn or Aliser as they battle a giant, and Ygritte. Episode ends with Stannis offering to legitimize Jon and make him the Lord of Winterfell: “Say nothing of what we’ve discussed here today. To anyone. But when you return, you need only bend the knee, lay your sword at my feet, and pledge yourself to my service, and you shall rise as Jon Stark, the Lord of Winterfell.”

A Different CoatArya leaves for Braavos; Jon becomes Lord Commander of the Watch; Dany banishes Jorah, chains up her dragons, and decides to stay in Meereen to learn how to rule; Jaime frees Tyrion, who then proceeds to murder Shae & Tywin; “Only Cat.”; episode ends with Lady Stoneheart reveal.

I like the name Elia for that episode. It really cements the idea of the offscreen dead affecting the freshly so. Different Coat is more subtle than Cat of A Different Coat, I like either one for the final.

The Gift is perfect! We should be getting a much deeper insight into Bran’s “gift”; and of course the lands bearing that name have direct relation to another Brandon of House Stark, and also the Targ presence in the north! Hopefully we get some history here…. dubyadubyadubya.bran.gift/bloodraven. I feel like we learned of the Gift first from one of Bran and the Reeds travel chats, no?

Oh, and because even in Westeros, there are some things money can’t buy, and Tyrion recieves a helluva gift, as shortlived as it may be. Pun typically intended.

    loco73:

If “Moulin Rouge” is suppossed to be a point of referrence and proof, not thank you!The last thing I want to see is GoT look anywhere near as garish and kitchy as “Moulin Rouge”.

Jackson!

I think that’s a bit harsh considering season 4 isn’t even out yet. From these videos it looks the exact same as the previous seasons

    Felt Pelt,

    Sister Wrister,

With most of the episode titles, I tried to choose something that has multiple meanings. Such as with The Gift. It applies to Bran’s abilities, obviously, but it also has meaning for Arya (though it happens later, there’s a great reference to ‘the gift of mercy’, as it pertains to what she chooses to do with Sandor), and also Tyrion (Oberyn opting to fight as Tyrion’s champion is, quite literally, a gift).

Same with A Different Coat. The longer proposed title seems much too specific, when there are so many characters choosing (or being forced into) entirely new situations (or ‘coats’, as it were). Literally every major character is put into a situation where they’re status in the world they live in has changed (Jon choosing to become Lord Commander; Dany choosing to become the ruler of Meereen; Arya following a new path towards Braavos; etc.). The characters are, literally and/or metaphorically, all assuming different identities (whether external, internal, or both), or ‘different coats’. Then there’s the more literal meaning with “Only Cat.” and the (hypothetical) final scene.

Even Tywin is assuming a ‘different coat’, considering not many viewers will expect to see him in bed with a whore, much less Shae).

You’re wrong from the start, because the word “Westerosi” is used extensively in the books.

Let me clarify: I meant there’s no such thing as a monolithic “Essosi clothing fashion” — the word “Essosi” exists, as does the word “Westerosi”. You can’t just act like the Dothraki, Qartheen, Ghiscari, and various Free Cities are one monolithic cultural group of “Essosi” in their clothing styles.

I’d say that because I cannot see him at Joffrey’s/Magaery’s wedding.
Kevan became more important during Tyrion’s trial. it would have been perfect to reintroduce him as a loyal Lannister who is trustful and so on. Moreover, I find it frankly odd that he shall just randomly appear after Tywin’s death because he is Tywin’s most trusted adviser. And it would give him some more screentime which he definetely deserves. doubt we see him at Darry or Riverrun (taking Genna’s role), but only him and Pycelle being killed. In my opinion he should be made of more importance than shown until now because his death is probably the entire downfall of House Lannister and it reveals Varys’ intentions of not helping the realm, but destroying it.

Ok, you may have persuaded me on 4.10.

As for The Gift, as it relates to Arya… I was thinking more of her reacquiring what was once given to her as a gift…, as I think her gift to Sandor is likely ep8 (the brother’s Clegane both ending up in pretty rough shape at the end of the same episode), with Arya getting on the ship in 4.10. So ya, maybe it foreshadows a bit.

Regardless, of the suggestions put up so far, I thought yours had the best continuity and overall feel. Cheers!

Let’s not jump to conclusions to easily here. Kevan could also be arriving after Joffrey’s wedding, and thus in time for the trial. He could also reappear in season 5 without many problems (though I’d prefer him to be in this season). Also, why a recast? Ian Gelder is a good actor and plays his part well.

Remember that just because we haven’t heard from an actor/character returning, that doesn’t mean we won’t see them. Last season that was the case with Salladhor Saan (Msamati), Balon Greyjoy (Malahide) and Maester Aemon (Vaughan), for instance.

Well, actually I think it would just make more sense to reintroduce him in Season 4 because S4 has so less ‘new’ characters. Season 5 will be full of them and a Kevan Lannister may easily be forgotten within so many more recognizable characters. Unsullied I know are still merging Stannis and Roose, so yeah.

Well, why should Kevan not take place at the wedding? He is Joffrey’s granduncle and Tywin’s most trusted man and also a member of the Small Council at that point. It wouldn’t make too much sense to let him appear after the PW, but well maybe they put it into this way: Tywin says he needs more trustful man in the Small Council and order Kevan to come to KL, that would be okay for me.

    SM4e,

They have generally neglected the Small Council, even in season 1. Barristan was supposed to have a place as Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. and then they shrug it off in 305 by saying Robert didn’t trust him enough for the honour. We’ve never seen a Master of Ships on the council, even though Paxter Redwyne came to the city at the end of Clash. Mathis Rowan was also on the council as Tywin took up the office again, and Kevan replaced Renly as Master of Laws, so basically it now looks like the realm is run by a stern lion, a sly eunuch, and a doddering old Maester, with no one covering the aforementioned positions left vacant since season 1.

Rant aside, I don’t think the Kevan issue will become apparent in retrospect, given that Lysa and Thorne are both returning after a prolonged absence. Kevan may have only had one moment to shine in season 2, but he certainly shone brightly, even acting like the person he’s destined to be.

Whoops, I forgot that bit, it’s been a while since I saw season 1 (must be what, 5 weeks, 6 maybe? ;) But they should give Jaime his rightful place now he’s back in the capital, or they’ve seriously missed a trick. It’s odd that, even when he was trapped in the Riverlands, they never thought to give his position (even temporarily) to someone else. The Kingsguard has also been significantly neglected. Arthur Dayne is never mentioned once, not even by Jaime, who admired him greatly, and now we only have Jaime, “Ser Taryn Mant, and Whatsit of Who Cares?”. I think Balon Swann was given a mention as being in the Kingsguard on the show wiki, simply because he was in the books after Mandon Moore died, but we even know?

What I’m basically saying is, I could rant pointlessly for Great Britain if it were an Olympic event.

I definitely agree that we need more Kingsguard, even if just as extras this season, but perhaps cast with actors in future seasons.

RE Arthur Dayne, the show somewhat consoldiates his role with Selmy (On the show, Jaime speaks of having idolized Selmy in contexts where in the books he’d usually be talking about Dayne). Putting aside any issues in terms of the Daynes being important in the books, I think this is kind of a clever idea. Jaime and Barrister are very much foils to each other, so I think it makes sense to play up this factor.

On both ADs, I can imagine them digging into the histories at a later point, given that they’re already struggling to portray the ongoing events in 9 and a half hours of TV each season (even less on season 2, which should’ve had 12 or 13 episodes). Dawn could be very important a few years down the line, as many believe it to be the true “Lightbringer”, and whether or not this is the case, the Dayne’s themselves are still an enigma shrouded in mystery.

    Valyrian Plastic,

Well, as I said Kevan should be introduced when Tywin is still alive. Rowan and Redwyne are not very important until now, but we know that Kevan is actually important and I don’t want to miss his awesome conversations with Tyrion, Cersei and Jaime and maybe some invented scenes with Tywin.

    Hand of the Kingslayer,

And how many storylines did ‘Mhysa’ apply to? It’s the season finale. It has to be short and memorable, not a tongue-twister that takes up half of a TV guide page. Besides, I find the claim that ‘OACOADC’ references both Tyrion and Sansa and Catelyn’s arcs forced. It does not. It’s a sentence part of a song sometimes sung about this one character, but not in this episode or in this context, that also happens to include the words said in another scene about another character. That is a terribly convoluted and strained reason to pick it.

“WWG” would also be revisited a lot in Season 5′s dialogue… for better or worse.

    Eljuma,

    Hand of the Kingslayer,

In terms of possible applications of “Only A Cat of a Different Cloak”:

    1. Littlefinger’s “Only Cat” comment as he kills Lysa.
    2. Catelyn (“Cat”) coming back from the dead as Lady Stoneheart
    3. Tywin being revealed as a hypocrite and being killed by Tyrion. Also the fact that Tyrion tells Tywin that he’s him writ small.
    4. Jaime having rejected the role as heir of House Lannister (offered by Tywin) in favor of the White Cloak of the Kingsugard, and the related idea that Jaime is actually very different than Tywin.
    5. Assuming any of the Tyrells show up in the episode, they killed at his wedding, paralleling the Red Wedding/Cersei’s threat to Margaery last season based on what happened to the Reynes”
    6. Theon, who has become Reek, dressing in the clothes of Theon
    7. While Arya hasn’t become Cat of the C annals yet, she will be leaving for Braavos at the end of the season.
    8. Similar to the Jaime one, Jon is offered by Stannis to become head of House Stark, but instead opts to be Lord Commander (this one is a lot more tenuous, but the Cat part is sort of relevant given Catelyn and Jon’s relationship)
    9. Sansa, Catelyn’s daughter is (maybe) under the identity of Allayne Stone and (maybe) has dyed her hair to hide her resemblance to Catelyn.

    Valyrian Plastic,

Actually, I think Barristan was lying and testing Jorah. Barristan was present at a number of the Small Council meetings in season 1 IIRC, so they can’t just say he wasn’t. And how else would they reveal Jorah’s betrayal?

He wasn’t in any of those meetings. As for the reveal of Jorah’s betrayal, one way is to have Barristan intercept/overhear a letter/message meant for Jorah (with instructions from Varys for instance)

    Dutch maester,

Weird. I remember him being at the Council Chambers… I guess the book and the show got jumbled in my head. Either way, Jorah has stopped communicating with Varys since Qarth at the latest (“will you betray her again?”). Barristan finding a letter meant for Varys is impossible. That said, Barristan finding a letter FROM Varys is possible. Maybe a courier comes asking for Jorah and Barristan decides (after being suspicious of Jorah) to take the letter himself.

anyone else slightly confused by showing mark gatiss sitting down with what look like three other men from the iron bank, at a table that we havent seen in KL before, and doesnt seem to fit there, makes me wonder if we will see him in braavos with some other character (most likely LF as he could drop by between KL and the Vale) or perhaps he shows up in Danaerys’ storyline first before showing up again next season in KL

Already been confirmed on here that Stannis is stopping in at Braavos on the way to the wall.

    Chickenduck,

Well, it’s not CONFIRMED, but it is all but it’s all but confirmed at this point. I guess it could be outside of Braavos, but that is highly unlikely. I just wonder how much of Braavos we’ll see this season… Will we see the Titan? Probably. Will we see the canals and bridges? Probably not. I think most the Braavos we’ll see will be inside the Iron Bank with the rest being saved for season 5.

    1. I still think that was Ian Gelder in the leaked photos of the actors hanging out off set a few months ago. Sure, he hasn’t been confirmed, but neither were Balon, Maester Aemon etc last season.

    2. Ian Whyte will probably be the giant we saw in the trailer. He may also be CH, with voice dubbed.

Yes, I agree. I’m not positive on Iain Gelder, but I’d be very impressed with the show if they manage to pick up this many season1/2 actors without us knowing. This is a huge cast, and I can’t wait to see some old faces from years ago pop back up on my TV :)

    Hand of the Kingslayer,

HBO should devote a whole feature to cast members who were absent for a few seasons and only returned once they had an important role to play. And they should call it “We Need to Talk About Kevan” :).

I’m still holding hope for Joseph Gatt. We never learned what character he was playing, but he is at minimum in 4 episodes. With the Styr option out, I don’t think they’d cast him to just play a random Thenn.

I thought it was pretty clear that JG is portraying Styr, Magnar of Thenn. Why do you say that option is out?

It was confirmed that Styr is played by Russian actor Yuri Kolokolnikov ( http://winteriscoming.net/2013/11/styr-magnar-of-thenn-cast/ ) and I believe WiC said something about Joseph Gatt just playing a random Thenn.
