Ok, so a few things here…

–Those of us who thought it was going to be Jaime getting out to practice with Bronn may have gotten their wish. If that’s the way it goes, bravo to D&D for making that choice. Jerome Flynn’s been such an asset to the show, making Bronn into much more than the sellsword that he is. (As for his reasoning for not championing Tyrion, sure, the Stokeworth thing won’t be in the show, but the predominant reason in the book was still “Because I’m not so fucking stupid to try to take on Gregor Clegane.”)

–Looks like a shot of Margaery with Brienne, however briefly…interesting.

–Joffrey sucks. Boy, he’s such a prick bastard.

–Looks like Tormund Giantsbane gets some ass-kicking time. Fun!

I didn’t get that whole Arya’s bad-ass “nothing is nothing” stuff. Thank you, Jean Paul Sartre. (Was better to hear Emilia Clarke say that it was obvious that “Dracarys” was the most bad-ass line there is. Um, yes.)

–Speaking of which, OMFG DROGON WTF!!!?!??!??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, that was epic. And informative. So many questions and so many things to get excited about, but I’ll limit myself to just a handful of preliminary reactions.

-Bronn’s confirmed as Jaime’s new sparring partner, replacing Ser Ilyn Payne. Glad to see that they’ve found a way to keep Jerome Flynn involved in the show for this season and hopefully beyond. This new dynamic should be fascinating to watch.

-Speaking of Jaime, it looks as though he’ll be replacing Kevan Lannister as the primary emissary and counselor for Tyrion during the latter’s trial. Again, this seems like an economical condensation of characters and should be fun to watch. That is, at least until Kevan Lannister’s legion of devoted fans emerge from hiding, frothing at the mouth. That should be any minute now …

-So Brienne bites off a dude’s ear this season? That offers up a big clue about just how far they’re going to push into her AFFC storyline this season. BTW, Gwendoline Christie’s utter glee during that exchange was hands down my favorite part of the entire video.

-Is Roose Bolton going to be rocking a beard this season? Here’s another hair-related issues for the purists to obsess over. Screw it, I heartily approve.

-Drogon. Seriously, Drogon. Holy crap. He’s huge. And he looks fantastic. The visual effects team has outdone themselves yet again.

Whew. I think I’m going to sit back and crack open a beer to calm down now. Maybe more than one.

We actually can make a pretty good guess as to who’s ear Brienne bites off. It’ll be Locke of course. In the book, Locke’s character is named Vargo Hoat, aka the Goat. Brienne bites his ear off at the initial capture and rape attempt. He bandages it, but he eventually dies of an infection from it. And the timing of his death would be around this time in the book, though we only hear of it second hand. I imagine they’re going to make Brienne run into Locke again. How she’d escape though I’d have no idea.

There are two things there is no evidence of whatsoever that everybody is parroting as gospel for no reason. One is that Locke goes to the Wall and another that Yara goes to Moat Caitlin. I bet none of the two is gonna happen.

  73. cosca
    Posted February 10, 2014 at 10:49 pm | Permalink

    Eljuma,

Yara going to Moat Cailin is just speculation at this point, but WicNet is the source most people are citing for Locke going to the Wall http://winteriscoming.net/2013/09/two-more-actors-for-s4-and-a-return/. Maybe the sites sources are wrong, who knows. But this site is generally pretty reliable. It’s just odd that there’s been no sight of him in the promotion.

  74. Eljuma
    Posted February 10, 2014 at 11:34 pm | Permalink

And I’d like to know what those sources say (I’m not even going to demand who they are).

Taylor was already speculated to play a NWman before Season 3… in (by?) WICnet too:

    http://winteriscoming.net/2012/08/rumor-noah-taylor-and-burn-gorman-join-the-cast/

As far I know we never learned this site’s reason for why NT was speculated to be a NWman, but I remember doing the rounds on the internet and reading somewhere that it all came back to one guy who had seen the crew filming in NI and saw NT dressed in black, riding along with other guys dressed in black. From that this unidentified guy concluded that they were NWmen and NT was playing a member of the NW. As we all know it turned out to be that they were all Bolton men who also dress in black in the show.

Is the story repeating itself this year? I’ve seen so many people convincing themselves into seeing what they wanted to see that I’m willing to believe that’s exactly what’s happening. I’ve seen people seeing the champion of Meeren riding and identifying him as Oberyn Martell, even though that wouldn’t make sense at all and one can perfectly see Dany, the Unsullied and co in the background. I’ve seen people seeing an attack of “The Sons of the Harpy” in a scene where a bunch of slaves rip appart a slave master – i.e. the opposite of what the Sons of the Harpy are and do. Heck, I’ve seen people who saw Locke behind Jon in a scene of the trailer, and they pointed to a guy who only had in common with Locke the fact that he also had a beard (and of a different color at that). It is very easy to create rumors in this fandom and get them to be treated as proven fact in a couple of weeks (where is the interview where D&D say they hate Stannis, for example?).

    Eljuma:

I agree entirely with the sentiment you’re expressing. One thing crops up as a rumour, then a day later it becomes gospel. Like “someone said they’ll never do nudity again” turned into “OMG no naked Cersei doing the walk of shame” even though Lena Headey has said otherwise. Or the rumours about why Conan or Skrein left that get bandied around as fact, even though we really don’t have any idea what happened and will likely never find out.

Although regarding D&D saying “they hated Stannis” – that one’s semi-true and I think it stems from their commentary on the S2 box set.

BUT – important difference – they didn’t say they hated him, they said he would have been a terrible king. To be honest, I agree with them on this – I though Bryan Cogman’s views summed it up well in the last interview on here.

I think that a lot of Stannisgate has happened because people who love him do so due to their perspective after certain events that might happen in S4…

Which ties into another point – what some fans disregard is the perceived need for Character Arcs in writing for TV. Walter White had to start as a fairly normal guy for his descent into Scarface to work dramatically. If BB had been a book series before the show, but was otherwise exactly the same, you would have had people see the pilot episode and saying “he’s nowhere near evil enough, they’re totally whitewashing Walter,” because they’d have the end point in mind.

Stannis (I assume, but I’m not on the writing staff, so I could be wrong) needed to start as a fairly unlikeable king for his rescue of Jon and the NW to have serious impact. For TV-only viewers, it’ll be a great redemptive moment.

Similarly, Cersei can’t go batshit crazy too early. Tyrion can’t go too sinister too early. The things that set off those changes haven’t happened on the show yet… But they will.

And I for one am looking forward to crazy naked Cersei doing the walk of shame, but it wouldn’t have the same impact if she was already too crazy now. I’m confident we’ll get to see the spiral into madness from about episode 3 this season…

  76. Eljuma
    Posted February 11, 2014 at 7:58 am | Permalink

Exactly. People also bashed D&D for calling Jaime “a monster” behind the scenes (which is apt for a guy that has three biological children with his married twin sister and thinks the solution for all his problems is killing or bribing someone, no matter how one puts it) and the whole “killing a cousin so far removed in the family tree he had no idea he existed”, which they treated as if he had just killed Tyrion and raped his corpse. There were people who pointed at that and used it as evidence that the show was getting rid of Jaime’s redemption.

  77. Greatjon of Slumber

Chickenduck: Similarly, Cersei can’t go batshit crazy too early. Tyrion can’t go too sinister too early. The things that set off those changes haven’t happened on the show yet… But they will.

Bingo. I don’t get the whole idea that Cersei has somehow been changed dramatically from what we see in the books. Most of the really unhinged Cersei stuff comes after other events. And the same with Tyrion, as you’ve suggested – he was a bit more of a bastard to people in Season 1 and has been somewhat grounded, but to me most of the talk of him being “whitewashed” relates to A) the killing of that singer who dared mock him and try to blackmail him and B) that other situation at the end of the book.

I remain of the opinion that A will be ignored, as it is a minor development easily discarded, and B will come out pretty much as expected.
