I’d like to see some more of the battle at the Wall, maybe some mammoths and giants.

Shots long enough to be seen with the naked eye. I’m grateful for all the bounty HBO has bestowed thus far, but pausing every frame and waiting for screencaps gets old.

Wow! They really are going all out with the promotional material for this season. Spoiling us with so much stuff over the last few weeks. My only worry if I can call it one is that the last month or so is going to be such a drag because they will have already released all the trailers early. Although the Season 3 blu ray material should provide more than enough entertainment to fill that gap!

Hoping to get at least a glimpse of Mance in this trailer just so the nagging doubt about him not showing up this season can be put to bed.

I don’t think it’s all that mysterious. Bran is probably going to be captured at Craster’s Keep, and will meet the Three Eyed Raven and the Children of the Forest. Stannis will be burning people on Dragonstone, travelling to the Wall, going to the Iron Bank of Braavos and attacking the Wildlings in episode 9.

It’s really strange how much HBO’s marketing of the show changes season to season. Last year, I think we hadn’t even gotten the first trailer at this point. And last year’s Foreshadowing-type show was only a look back at Season II.

I wonder if there’s a method to their madness?

What I’d really love to see is an awesome poster for Season IV. The Season I one had such a great cinematic feel with Ned on the Throne. Season II & III were pretty meh.

All in all though, they do spoil us with way more content than any other show on TV. Keep it coming.

    Don’t care,

Prior to season three, HBO didn’t have an hour long drama on the schedule (Luck having been unceremoniously cancelled); only the second seasons of Girls & Enlightened. I watch pretty much everything the network puts out, but by and large, I’d guess there isn’t a whole ton of cross-over between the audiences.

Seems more likely that HBO is trying to keep those people who subscribed for True Detective to stick around for Game of Thrones, rather than them trying to build up the audience for the current show. It’s not like these trailers and making-of features don’t appear on-line almost simultaneously, anyway. I imagine we’ll be getting a lot of promotion for The Leftovers and the final season of True Blood once season four of GoT starts, simply because it is an effective marketing strategy.

In either case, fans win. We’ll get another trailer before another sure-to-be-great episode of a fantastic show.

The marketing for this show seems like a bit of a lab for HBO. Barring the first year (which doesn’t count) they have changed the marketing every year. I wonder if they’re just looking for the ideal formula or that the change itself is actually that formula

Sherif Ali: Have you no fear, English?
T.E. Lawrence: My fear is my concern, but I’ll be very cross if D&D don’t cast Mads Mikkelsen as Euron.

I think HBO is using the success of TD to help promote GoT to those subscribers who shy away from fantasy. I know many people who watch HBO but won’t watch GoT because of the genre, even though I try and persuade them otherwise.

And I dont think TD needs any more promotion. It is all over the media and is being heralded as the best show on TV.

    erin,

To be fair this will be the season where viewers may start to dislike Dany. ADWD is the point were many book readers were disenchanted/bored/dissapointed with her. I think shes a good/ok character. She’s was my 6th favorite POV read after Ned, Tyrion, Arya, and Jon, and Jaime. Here’s my ranking of POV characters

    1) Eddard Stark
    2) Tyrion Lannister
    3) Arya Stark
    4) Jon Snow
    5) Jaime Lannister
    6) Daenerys Targaryen
    7) Bran Stark
    8) Victorion Greyjoy
    9) Theon Greyjoy
    10) Jon Connington
    11) Barristan Selmy
    12) Brienne of Tarth
    13) Sansa Stark
    14) Arianne Martell
    15) Catelyn Stark
    16) Davos Seaworth
    17) Asha Greyjoy
    18) Samwell Tarly
    19) Melisandre
    20) Arys Oakheart
    21) Aeron Greyjoy

Earlier this week, Pres. Obama asked the Pres. of HBO where his favorite shows – True Detective and Game of Thrones – were? The NY Times reported that the Pres. of HBO probably ordered the entire first season of True Detective, as well as most of the 4th season of GoT, in DVD format, for Pres. Obama, so he can them while he’s relaxing at Rancho Mirage, CA this weekend.

That’s not fair – next thing we know, Pres. Obama will be ordering up some 1970s German porn and he’ll be requesting Alexandra Daddario and Carice van Houten as his new summer interns.

    Turncloak,

The weird thing about Dany’s storyline is the shift between ASOS and ADWD.

Since the birth of her dragons it seems like Dany cando no wrong, so her storyline had the potential to become much more interesting when her mistakes come to bite her in ADWD. But in practice it reads like GRRM did a 180, suddenly everything Dany does is a mistake and combined with the Daario-fawning she seems to be a different, much mature character.

So I hope D&D balance it out better than the books did.

GoT needs promotion? HBO is too lazy, the show too mainstream. They didnt even care for a poster this season. True detective is too shallow to be best. It will be remembered as McConaughey and Harrelson co-op cop show, talking monologues and shit.

Headhunters was a very fun movie. Not sure about aksel as G, he’s a bit to smooth I think + isn’t he pretty small? (that’s the impression I got from Headhunters anyway) I don’t think he’s a very good fit for the very warrior like appearance of JonCon. I think he would have made a great Aurane Waters though (if he had been younger and if the character would have been cast). He would also be good at playing Braavosi. I think he would really fit into the style of the city

    Veltigar,

The production is great and all, but what show isnt that today.
Even walking zombie looks like a movie with model actors and score and whatnot.
Soon there will come another 100 million netflix show, featuring Will and Jaden smith, directed by M night Shyamalan and scored by Miley Cyrus,
Oh no, that was the hbo comedy coming soon. And with Calvin Harris too!

The thing is, good tv is not just hipster-rich-premium tv. Its mainstream tv now. Its netflix shows. Its microsoft backed up by Steven spielberg. Its normal cable.
Showtime has lost grip, and HBO is following. Unless HBO follow Netflix, which it is trying already.
The probability that GoT 4 will have 8 great episodes is inevitable.
9 will be epic, 2 ecstacy, 6/7/8 nailbitingly bitter, 4 full measure adrenalin and 10 bound to wake old red gruesome memories. Arg, it will be gloriously fucked up, or it will be lame ass fight-fight-fight.

Aksel, you should see him in 90 minutes, that movie is Victarion level fucked up. Norwegian WWII movie Max Manus, there he is perfect poster boy war hero.

    Lord Davos,

Until Mad Men ends, AMC remains the definition of awesome television.
HBO has great shows, but it also has some pretty bad stuff.
Showtime should cancel all the terrible half hour dramedies and up its game.
Netflix has an OK show that didn’t live up to the expectatives created by its movie talent team in front and behind the cameras. It only has one great show – Orange is the new Black.

Showtime has a few good ones IMO…

    I have enjoyed:

    Homeland
    Ray Donovan
Shameless (which last Sundays episode took a huge impressive dramatic turn at the very end).

Showtime is nipping at the heels of HBO as far as premium cable offerings IMO.

    Edit:

It also makes me wonder if Showtime is saving up its pennies to try their hand at an epic… It seems they are trying to go blow for blow with HBO in every other category except they haven’t put any epics in the ring yet…

Dany is a popular draw for the show, as are the dragons, Tyrion and Jon’s locks, so there will always be plenty of those. No use griping about it.

And I think they try to be secretive by seeming revealing, in a way. I mean, Joff’s clock is ticking, people know that from last season. And Tyrion is in trouble – that’s hardly news. Also, Jon fights a lot. And look, there’s a hot new guy. For the rest we have slow motion and the pause button. Although I’d still be surprised if Bloodraven or Stoneheart showed up in the trailer. Mance, Gendry, Shae – could happen, but only glimpsed.

Also, Jon fights a lot. And look, there’s a hot new guy. For the rest we have slow motion and the pause button. Although I’d still be surprised if Bloodraven or Stoneheart showed up in the trailer. Mance, Gendry, Shae – could happen, but only glimpsed.

I absolutely understand why they have to show Daenerys/Tyrion/Jon in each of their glimpes/trailers, but it’s their own fault by whitewashing these characters, so that the majority of the audience only cares for these “good, never doing wrong” characters (that they can refer sooooo much to [oh my gash, I hate when people think like that] and gives no two shits about other characters that actually have some flaws.

Many viewers say they like Jon, Tyrion and Daenerys despite their flaws? But when I ask them which flaws they mean, I get answers like:
    “Jon’s a bastard.”
    “Tyrion fucks Whores.”

Uhm yeha, these flaws impress them, but they don’t give a damn about Theon’s father-complex, Jaime’s heroic actions in KL, Sansa’s fears or Brienne’s uglyness.
Why? Either because they are not good looking (Theon, Brienne) or because people think that everybody is either black (Jaime, Sansa) or white (Jon, Tyrion, Daenerys).

I don’t know, if you get me. If not, sorry, English isn’t m mother tongue.

    SM4e,

no, it’s fine, I get you.

I just see it a bit differently, I think. Trailers are meant to advertise, they are supposed to speak to a lot of people, so they will necessarily be broad. I don’t really think “white-washing” is responsible for people liking and recognizing these particular characters – most of them are pretty popular with book readers, too (Dany may be an exception, but I wouldn’t really bet on that either. I know quite a few people who are not the intense fan type and like her. Also, she has dragons. Never forget the dragons.).

I mentioned slow-motion, because I’m one of those people obsessed enough to actually do that (I know), and that’s usually how I catch most of my favourite characters.

    Hand of the Kingslayer,
I am looking forward to that show, because it sound almost as legit as GoT. SF design pitched against fantasy design, we might lose for the first time. And when that happens, the only thing that sets GoT apart is the scale and writing. Spielberg is sure to get some stars. That might become the next
    threat to GoT.
It doesnt really matter what a show is good at.
Only thing that matters is either movie stars BE and TD, a well realised world MM and TWD or crazy writing GoT and BB.
Hollywood is going down the shitter, and they try hang to television. They blurr the lines, then you get House of Cards, which is less authentic than even GoT. Its the cinema wasteland affecting tv. Long corny shots and phony actors are coming.

I don’t recall those rumours myself. From Vulture last year he did say: “With them having canceled [Political Animals], it leaves me open, I suppose, to go back for [GoT] series four. But nobody’s said anything.”

All they had to do was ask, and I’m sure they asked. I’m fairly confident there was another interview or video where he confirmed his return.

Why are people suddenly worrying about Mance? He has a pretty big role going forward, so why would he not return to the show? Even if he wasn’t seen… wicnet does great work in collecting filming reports and actor sightings, but not everything is always observed. I’m sure he’ll make his appearances.

Yeah, one can hope they will do it justice. The Halo series has an extremely rich universe and a lot of gems to find for those who are looking. As a resident Halo fanboy who enjoys it for more than just shooting things in the face, I think and hope that it could be a huge success (especially after the awesome CGI miniseries they released with Halo 4).

    You forgot Sons of Anarchy!!!!

I don’t know if you were taking count of series who aren’t currently on air cause it kinds of matter, at least to me, in the big picture of cable. The Killing from AMC. It’s a shame it was cancelled but season 3 was so good and the acting was top notch. Episode 10 of season 3 was one of the best hours of television I’ve seen. I may be overtopping it, but it really is worth a watch.

    Breaking Bad.

True Detective…Jesus F*ck I could listen to McConaughey talk all 60 minutes and it would be damn fine. When he describes in ep.3 religion and the people who have faith, it was like he was reading my mind. The writing and acting are so good.

Trailer this Sunday? Holy crap bring it on!!!

    JD,

I had not heard this rumor until now and honestly I hope it is true. I hate recasts but I think I hate Ciaran Hinds as Mance even more. It wouldn’t surprise me if he left either because he never seemed like he even wanted to be on this show in the first place. His casting was one of the worst this show has done, they were desperate to get someone with a “name” for the role of Mance so they ended up with him. They should have just went with an unknown who was younger, more charismatic, and better fit for the role.

I’m not sure I follow people who believe Dany, Jon and Tyrion are white-washed, especially after three seasons. So far all three of them have been shown to make the mistakes they do in the book. They showed Jon losing his temper, killing Quorin (technically not a mistake) and breaking his vows with Ygritte, Tyrion scheming as Hand, and Dany making some bad choices, etc. I believe Jon also says a line in season 4 along the lines of “I’ve done plenty wrong.” The drawback is we don’t have access to their thoughts. Even though Jon remains my favourite book and tv character for instance, I still enjoy the other characters and their nuances, like Jamie and Davos, or Cersei, Joffrey and Tywin. And I know a couple of non-readers who love Tywin, for instance, even if they know he’s from the “bad” family.

Ciaran Hinds is a seasoned actor and he has been on at least one HBO show before – he played Caesar on Rome. I personally liked his version of Mance a lot, but to each their own I guess.

I read one interview he gave about GoT where he mentioned being astonished that the role was far bigger than he expected. But there didn’t seem any resentment for being on the show or whatever. (Not that I would care, tbh, but it didn’t seem like he disliked it in any way.)

Ragman’s Harbor: Since the birth of her dragons it seems like Dany cando no wrong, so her storyline had the potential to become much more interesting when her mistakes come to bite her in ADWD. But in practice it reads like GRRM did a 180, suddenly everything Dany does is a mistake and combined with the Daario-fawning she seems to be a different, much mature character.

    So I hop

True Detective is a HBO show and is not on AMC. Also, The Killing was god awful which is why it was canceled TWICE

    Turncloak,

I believe you misquoted me, but whatever. I do know that TD is on HBO since I watch it on HBO, nowhere have I wrote that I’m watching it on AMC, neither Sons of Anarchy.

We all have our opinions, I thought The Killing was a good show, flawed, but with many redeeming qualities. A bad show doesn’t get picked up by Netflix after cancellation if it was really ”god awful”, it got cancelled because of low ratings.

Low ratings doesn’t mean a show is bad. Just watch Community.

I’m sorry if I misunderstood you. I’ve simply read many, many people saying they disliked him as Mance recently, and I guess it became kind of an issue without me noticing.

They do love them indeed, and I’m sorry they’re losing something with the show versions (I confess I do miss Tormund’s bawdy humour sometimes, too). But calling the actors awful or the characters badly written just because they are not like they are in the books – it seems a tiny bit unfair.

Just to comment on the Ciaran Hinds debate: The HBO Game of Thrones schedule has added Episode 31 to its schedule. If you click on it, you get list of the major cast (now not including Richard Madden, Michelle Fairley, James Cosmo) which includes Ciaran Hinds! (note, the cast list is based on the entire season and the same for every episode, so this does not mean these people are all in ep. 1)

These lists are a bit odd – I’ve looked at the season 3 ones, and they omit some people who were in the credits last year (but also had Gwen, who wasn’t in the credits *and* had Hinds, who never was in the credits, either.)

I guess we cannot be sure about who is a regular until we get one of the press releases where all the cast is listed, but wouldn’t it be fun if Hinds and Rigg were among the new regulars?

Well, who knows. Maybe they have an extra special status or something.

You are one of the few people with the balls to say that on here. People bitched and moaned that Jon was portrayed stupidly all through seasons two and three, and then call it “white-washing”. I don’t get it. So if he’s a hero in season four, what will they call him then? It seems Kit and Emilia can’t do anything right. Even Oz fell for all the criticism in his Thanksgiving thread last year, when he too self-consciously acknowledged their so-called flaws but then tried to defend them. When the Foreshadowing preview came out, a large chunk showed Jon’s upcoming situation at the Wall, including his relationship with Sam, and I thought it would get people excited, but it got very little acknowledgement in the threads. What about the Hound? He is a LOT more tame than in the books, I find him almost comical at times, but no-one criticises Rory McCann’s acting skills. And I still love Carian’s Mance, even if we get to see so little of him.

    Morna the Witch,

Emilia was a good Dany in season 3 and season 1. I think she will continue to be good. Kit was fine in season 1 and 2, falling prey to the writing that was changed for the worse from the books. I have hopes that Kit will pull it off in season 4 since he has stronger material to work with. We shall see.

People bitch, cause they dont get Jons pessimistic pov and then everything seems flowers and unicorns and poopfaced. In the books Mance and Tormund made a strong impression because Jon is rigid and sullen himself. His pov changes over the series though.

Do people really think HBO is really gonna release a trailer with 0 Dany, who’s story will be gritty and amazing this season, and replace it with Stannis, when he is 1) not that liked by people who aren’t on Westeros and 2) has about 3 scenes before he gets to the Wall

Personally I find glimpses of dragons, ruling and revolt more interesting than Melisandre, Stannis and Davos looking into the distance. I’d love to hear some of that Braavos dialogue though.

Just to add a quick point to the conversation on Ciaran Hinds. I read an interview with him that talked about how his casting was pretty last minute, giving him very little time to research and prepare for the role. Therefore, what we got in Season 3 was essentially a sketch of what will surely be a more fully realized performance in the coming seasons. Hinds expressed his excitement to flesh Mance out more and explore his many facets. That being said, I thought what we got last season was pretty great to begin with. Hinds is a gifted and versatile actor who exudes charisma, so even if it wasn’t “Mance” quite yet, it certainly wasn’t boring. I’m excited to see what he brings to the character as he’s given more time and material.
