Interview Recap

A look back at Season 3 in The Politics of Power

It’s just 25 days and counting until the season 4 premiere of Game of Thrones, and HBO has released a helpful recap to refresh viewers’ memories. In the 25-minute-long featurette “The Politics of Power,” we take a look back at the pivotal events of season 3 that shaped the shocking twists and turns of the show’s world. The footage is interspersed with interviews from cast members such as Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and more.

Ours is the Fury: Reliving season 3 is getting me revved up for the new season, that’s for sure. At the same time, it’s hard to believe we’re almost at the fourth season! Less than a month to wait now.

  • Al Swearengen,

yeah, though i think it’s a bit early. but we’re probably gonna see LS whether it was with brienne or a Frey > is there any news on Beric’s actor returning? or has he been written off since LS will take his place?

  • So I guess Ser Gerold Hightower did not exist in the show? Emilia said Barristan was “head of the Kingsguard” for her father Aerys.

  • I watched a little bit but decided I don’t like being told what I already know by actors who look like they can’t wait to be finished saying lines that were just fed to them. It’s good for unsullied viewers who only watch each episode once, but otherwise, don’t see the point.

  • Greg,

Does it really matter? This is on the level of Jaime squiring for Barristan instead of Arthur Dayne.

  • GerB40,

He’s talking about Brienne. A popular theory right now is she’ll have her encounter with Lady Stoneheart at the end of this season. Arguably for general audiences it will be a better way to introduce her than having a random Frey Meet her. Also completely cuts out a (largely considered dull) storyline from season 5, which is going to be packed as it is.

  • I like that the Hound puts on his badass voice mode before saying Beric Dondarrion’s name. :)

Here goes to another dramatic book reader who feels superior because they know the story. Cookies all around…..

  • King Stannis,

Didn’t mean to come off that way. Obviously this was created for the unsullied, and that’s perfectly fine, and smart. Next time I’ll refrain from posting when I don’t have much to say on a topic.

  • So no one finds it weird that Winter posted on here every day, then one day he just up and quits with no warning, gives the site reigns to an unsullied. And said guy hasn’t posted or done anything with the website since?

  • Easily the worst, most boring and hollow ‘special’ HBO has done for this show. It’s a 25-minute long “previously on Game of Thrones” prepper narrated without any insight or emotion. Waste of time. An unemployed fan could have made that video the week after S3 ended, and probably done so with a lot more drama.

  • Although I’m sullied I watched this anyway, and two big things I noticed are a) no mention of the ‘old Daario’ and b) no mention of gendry or the leeches. I think they’re trying to make the unsullied forget about the ‘old Daario’ as he’s been recast but them ignoring gendry leads me to suspect the bastard may never be returning to the show… Also the leeches were probably left out because they’re kinda spoilery

  • House Ray,

Hell no. That shit is locked down tighter than GRRM’s storytelling sphincter. Thank the Gods. Why ruin one of potential best twists of the season?

  • No no no Emilia, Gerold Hightower was lord commander of the Kingsguard for your father.

  • Lollius Palicanus,

That actually might differ in show canon. Was Gerold Hightower ever mentioned in the show? No, and it would make sense to remove him and say Barry was Lord Commander in the show. We’ll have to wait and see about that.

Or… Emilia made a simple mistake. She does read the books, so you can’t call her out on that, and it’s not like this isn’t an epically vast story that has hundreds if not thousands of minor characters. No need to get pissed at Emilia (I’m not talking to you specifically here, I know you aren’t necessarily “pissed”).

  • Ser Davos Seaworth,

lol yeah I noticed the lack of old Daario as well. Not a bad thing. Hope they don’t reintroduce Daario too obviously. “So DAARIO, that new hairdo really just… Changed your whole face!”

  • Tori Targaryen,

I know it won’t happen, but I would love them to do the typical soap opera voice over once he appears: “The role of Daario Naharis will be played by Michel Huisman.”

  • Satin,
I know, but I don’t see what that’s supposed to prove. They can’t retell every single thing from season 3 without the video being much longer. This is just supposed to remind people or bring them up to speed so they could more easily follow season 4. Nothing of huge importance happened to Yara in season 3, and one will not need to know anything special about her to follow her plot this season, except that she is Theon’s sister, which will be obvious anyway after she mentions her brothet Theon.

  • Little birds are saying the first episode of season 4 has leaked online. I haven’t verified it myself, and don’t plan to (it will make the wait for episode 2 unbearable) but for those who ARE interested… The person who said it may very well be full of shit, though. It’s 50/50.

  • Annara Snow,

it only proves that not everything appears in the special that might be important in Season 4. I’m pretty sure Yara’s trip to save Theon will be important, and that’s the part that needed reminding, not that she’s Theon’s sister.

    jentario,

well, screeners have been out, apparently, so it’s not impossible I guess. Buuut I doubt it.

  • Satin,
I’m not sure why you think you needed to tell me that. I never argued that everything of note for season 4 is covered in this video, I argued that they weren’t going to cover things of no relevance for season 4 – such as what happened to Gendry, who we know is not in season 4; and that this says nothing about whether the character will reappear in a later season. Didn’t you just add more support to my argument, rather than the other way round?

Anyway, they do not need to know that Yara wants to save Theon, because they will learn that when they see her trying to save Theon.

  • Al Swearengen:
    aoo,
I reckon a certain person from Tarth will bump into them near the end of the season.

From your keyboard to TPTB’ script, Al! I lay odds on being on the last ep and coming face to face with UnCat the last scene. This got me all excited for Season 4 again. LOL

  • Darkstar is the key: So no one finds it weird that Winter posted on here every day, then one day he just up and quits with no warning, gives the site reins to an unsullied. And said guy hasn’t posted or done anything with the website since?

Zack works on the website every day, but it’s largely behind the scenes handling the boring work that the commenters never really think about. (And you shouldn’t have to think about, if we’re doing our jobs right!) Also, the Game of Owns podcasts that you see being posted regularly on WiC are created and led by him, and you can hear his thoughts on Game of Thrones there. So yes, he has done quite a lot with the website since then. :)

Hmm I wouldn’t be surprised if it was true, to be honest. There are lots of screeners out to critics now. Or someone could have just written a very spoiler-y synopsis of a screener and that’s what’s floating around?

  • Annara Snow,

I meant what I said. Not everything that is relevant will be in the special, so something not being in the special doesn’t mean it’s not relevant. Such as Yara’s journey to save Theon.

  • I would watch the cast of GoT read the phonebook, so this made my sullied heart happy :)

I’ve also been rereading ASOS, AFFC, and ADWD again over the last few months, and it was good to get a recap of the tv show’s storyline.

I’m one of those rare birds who respects the fact that the books and the tv show are two different animals. I love them each in their own way, and I wouldn’t enjoy either as much without the other.

  • OT: Just a quick question. Does anybody have any information about how the sales of the season 3 DVD/BD box set in the US went? The sales in the UK were apparently very good, but I can’t find anything about the US.

  • Wait, Jorah, Grey Worm and Daario killed the slavers of Yunkai? Is that a mistake, weren’t they killing the few slave soldiers that wanted to fight?

The whole point of the Yunkai storyline is that she leaves the slavers alive and they rally half a continent against her

Where is this being rumoured? Stuff like this normally rouses 4chan from its slumber :p

  • House Mormont,

Of curse it is. Everything that has been said offhandedly in an interview should be taken with a grain of salt. It wasn’t established in the show.

  • Satin,
Again, I don’t see how that proves that Gendry will never come back since he was not in this video, which is what I was arguing against. We know that he is not relevant to this season, since the actor is not in this season. You haven’t proven or argued that characters who are not in this season would have to be in the recap if they are ever to reappear in some other season – so what are you arguing with me about?

  • Annara Snow,

oh. No, you misunderstood me completely.

I don’t think that Gendry won’t be in this season. I know Joe Dempsie wasn’t on the press release, but neither were people like Barristan, Shireen, Gilly or Pod, and we know all of them will be back. That’s why I said “just because someone or something isn’t in the special, doesn’t mean they won’t be relevant.” I don’t think Gendry will be irrelevant this season (I mean, even if we say he won’t do more than drop back into his book storyline, a lot points to Brienne meeting LS at the end of the season, and that’s where he shows up again in the books. ).

Sorry, I really didn’t get what you meant, and was getting a bit irritated.

  • Ours is the Fury,

It was a highly thumbed up YouTube comment that had a link but got deleted, and in the replies I didn’t see anyone who said it was fake. It was in one of GoT’s trailers. I can’t find it anymore, though.

I actually think it was fake, though. It was just worth a look.

  • Hand of the Kingslayer,

    Thanks, I like me too!

But seriously, what is dragon dung like? A kind of guano, or more like manure? Who knows? I have a friend with a guano fetish, he’s batshit crazy (just kidding :)!

  • Valyrian Plastic,

I could tell you what dragon poo looks like, but I’d have to kill you. And burry your body in dragon poo.

It looks like cocoa puffs. Prepare to die. And be burried in cocoa puffs.

  • Hand of the Kingslayer,

Thanks for making my day Hand, I can’t wait to see the rest of that big season opening moment where Drogon sprinkles his cocoa puffs all over the Red Keep :D.

I hope they also explain how a dragon can eat nothing but charred meat and not have constant indigestion. I bet they have to regurgitate the bones in pellets like an owl.

We should write a children’s book together, “Every Dragon Poops!”

  • Valyrian Plastic,

    Here is an excerpt:
“…and as the dragon grows, the poop grows as well. At first, a young dragon would let out a small sprinkle of cocoa puffs but adult dragons are capable of releasing torrents of shit the size of boulders. It is said that Balerion the Black Dread, the biggest dragon of them all, could unleash an avalanche of poo that would fill the room in seconds. It was in that diahreah that the Iron Throne was forged, melded together by the brown substance…”

Coming out in winter 294824852, as a tie in to The Winds of Winter.

  • JamesL,

Yeah, I agree. Can’t find it. It probably deleted, or it just disappeared in a sea of comments. The comment looked rather serious, but a lot of them do. I call fake.
