Go behind the scenes in Northern Ireland with new Artisans video

HBO has released a new Game of Thrones: Artisans video, featuring the sets and locations of Northern Ireland, the show’s home base. The featurette includes commentary from location manager Robert Boake, and cast members such as Iwan Rheon, John Bradley, Owen Teale, and Rose Leslie.

The video provides a glimpse at not just sets but at moments from the coming season, such as a scene with Ramsay Snow and Roose Bolton having a father-son chat. Check out the video and enjoy!

Ours is the Fury: I can’t wait to see that Bolton family special time. That should be interesting.

  • someone hit my head with something so hard that it will keep me unconscious for 20 days and 2 hours

  • i was wondering if they’d ever update the intro.. would be cool if they did. always curious about that.

  • I’m sure that brings back memories of long, cold nights outside for a lot of my extra mates. This season (like last season) I worked on a nice, cosy soundstage at Titanic Studios.

If I’m not mistaken that looked like Tommy Dunne making an onscreen appearance in the forge. Fair play to him!

  • Rimshot: If I’m not mistaken that looked like Tommy Dunne making an onscreen appearance in the forge. Fair play to him!

Yeah I just took a screencap on the WiC Tumblr, I’m 99% sure that it’s him.

  • Ours is the Fury,

Yay, I was just about to request some screenshots on wicnet tumbr!

EDIT: I love the crew member with a Bolton t-shirt! Didn’t notice that whilst watching the video. That’s why these screencaps are so useful.

  • I think that taking Winterfell out of the opening credits would be a haunting way to remind viewers of the fate of the Stark family. I agree that not seeing it there in the credits would be strange, but I think that strageness would really help to drive home the nature of change in the Seven Kingdoms.

  • How come we haven’t seen any reactions to S4 from critics on twitter yet? For the past 3 seasons lots of critics would tweet their reactions to the episodes after they got screeners but this year there hasn’t been anything. I hope that doesn’t mean they suck.

  • Ours is the Fury: Yeah I just took a screencap on the WiC Tumblr, I’m 99% sure that it’s him.

These screencaps are a godsend, btw. So helpful for recognising people and things. And of course for insane speculation.

  • JamesL,

I could imagine they were asked to save their reactions for the official beginning of the season. I’ve seen some info show up in the spoiler section for tv guide (nothing we don’t know already, they talk about Oberyn, etc), and it sounded like the person who saw it liked it.

  • King of the Ashes:

What are you talking about? Every season and sometimes episode, the intro has had locations added and/or removed.

  • JamesL,

I agree I also find that strange. In his podcast a couple weeks ago Andy Greenwald stated that he received 3 episodes of GoT season 4. Still no reaction though. Maybe they signed a non disclosure agreement until a certain date?

  • Azor H. Ahai, this was the best in-production video so far! So much focus on the Boltons I nearly had an orgasm, but I couldn’t hold my tears of excitement! OOOOHHH GOOOODS!

  • I just saw the “Bastards” preview on demand and it was glorious. 8 minutes long with new scenes featuring Roose and Ramsay as well as Oberyn and Ellaria.

  • The_Red_Viper:

I NEED TO SEE THIS SOMEONE UPLOAD IT ON YOUTUBE PLEEEEAAASE!!!

Don’t make me rue the day I raped your mother.

    Bring it on!

How is it possible to hate a family of characters so much, yet get so excited to see that line being delivered! I cannot wait.

  • TheMannis,

Verizon On Demand, as far as I know. Unless some very nice and lovely person makes it available, we’ll have to rely on descriptions, unfortunately.

  • JamesL,

You worry too much. With the major event that happens in episode 2 I’m sure HBO wanted them to be a bit more tight lipped this time around. And if they sucked then wouldn’t it be reasonable to assume that the critics would have tweeted about it?

  • Is that wet blood on John Bradley’s costume?

    ALSO OWEN TEALE!!!!

also super impressed that they made a cliff look like The Wall, how’d they do that?

  • Jordan:
Also, did I read correctly that we get our first glimpse of Fat Walda?

Yeah, Roose introduces her to Ramsay when he arrives at the Dreadfort.

  • Satin,

I have Verizon but no idea how to go about uploading it. And would it be legal?

It’s awesome by the way. Not only Dreadfort footage but some juicy Ellaria Sand dialogue as well; really gets over the difference in Dornish culture.

  • Watson:
    Turncloak,

The premiere is tomorrow. We’ll hear things, I’m sure.

Gods u are right! It’s premiering tomorrow at the Barclays Center! Can’t wait to hear the news! Very interested in seeing what us book readers will bitch about as well ;)

  • Dweezil:

I doubt it. Personally, I’d settle for a summary or whatever. Someone has already described the new scenes. The rest I’m guessing is Jon Snow, Gendry, the rest of Robert’s kids? What about Joffrey, Tommen and Myrcella, are they described as bastards, too?

  • Coldhands showing up seems less and less likely… and bran using the trees to find the way pretty much makes him obsolete anyways…

Just like no Jojen and Meera in Season 2 pissed me off, no Coldhands in Season 4 will piss me off as well…why is Bran the one getting the cuts all the time?

  • Kyrion,

I have no idea why theyd make Bran able to use the weirnet without Bloodraven and without eating the “weirwood” paste, especially with Bran’s lack of future material. They might just show him feeling a force from the weirwoods but not being able to warg them

  • House Mormont,

Pretty much I dont think they care about the paste, they will say Bran is using the trees because of his powers, in order to use his powers properly THEN hell have to be trained by Bloodraven

I really wonder what it means to have Jojen there, he’s the guide before Coldhands because of his powers, why would Bran be the one finding the path now…what would Jojen’s purpose be now? He kind of has to be in the paste, or else theres no reason for him to go with Bran if Bran is the one leading them there.

  • Putting out the word on tumblr and hoping someone with access to Verizon will turn up and download it. Because I need to see Fat Walda and Roose together. It’s imperative.

  • Turncloak,
I’ve never heard of a TV show having a non disclosure agreement for screeners, that usually is only for critics who screen movies and usually the movies that have those are not very good and the movie studios don’t want bad buzz. Even bad TV shows don’t have non disclosure agreements. Obviously HBO doesn’t want critics to spoil big events and the critics know that, I’m just looking for a general reaction to the first few episodes like in previous seasons. We should see some reactions tomorrow because it is the premiere.

  • Auren,

that confuses me, Hodor cant kill all of the wights (in the books, or white walkers if they so choose) or Meera cant fight all of them either, someone HAS to be there and fight them off why they enter the cave, thats where Coldhands comes in, thats why he was there, Jojen cant lead Bran to the Cave without making sure they are not molested thus Coldhands is there to protect them. Bloodraven I guess will send the ravens to protect Bran if they run into trouble in the show? Ugh…

Coldhands could have just been some stuntman on a horse cloaked, no CGI or nothing, so cheap, and mysterious, the character is a win, why is he omitted, makes no sense….ugh

  • Rabid Grunt:
    The_Red_Viper,

Can you feed us some details to keep us alive until the video surfaces? ;)

Sure, I’ll try to summarize it the best I can.

From what I remember the only new footage involved Oberyn, Ellaria, Cersei, Roose and Ramsay. The scene with Oberyn is him basically introducing Ellaria to Cersei and Tywin. Cersei is being a bitch to Ellaria for being a bastard and Oberyn talks about the differences between Dornish customs as opposed to other kingdoms. He explains how bastards aren’t treated any differently in Dorne and Cersei says something like “What should I call her?” and Ellaria says something like “Ellaria works”.

The other new footage was Roose arriving at the Dreadfort and he introduces Ramsay to Fat Walda. Then there is a scene inside the Dreadfort and Ramsay says something like “The flayed man is my sigil” and Roose responds by saying “My sigil. Not yours. You’re not a Bolton, you’re a Snow.”

  • The video goes in depth about a lot of bastards such as Ramsay, Jon, Gendry, etc. There is a lot of insight throughout from George, D&D, as well as some of the actors.

On top of my Ellaria accent question, does Fat Walda have one of those little Frey hats on?

It is hard to describe Ellaria’s accent but I’d say it is consistent with the accent of Oberyn’s, and it is very obvious that they come from the same place. Ellaria also has quite an interesting costume design in the scene with Cersei

They don’t mention anything about Gendry’s last name. Although they do acknowledge all the different bastard names depending on the region.

    Also,

I just remembered that in the scene in the Dreadfort, Roose says “I have put too much trust in you.” Then Ramsay says the line I already mentioned about having the flayed man on “our” banners and then Roose corrects him and says “my” banners.

  • Someone on tumblr is saying that the video is on HBOGo now as well. Going to check that out.

  • The_Red_Viper,

thank you for being our eyes and ears, and taking the time to describe this! Much appreciated.

That’s quite a bit more tension between Ramsay and Roose than in the books, isn’t it? I wonder how Walda feels about having Ramsay around. Oh great, now you guys have made me curious about the Bolton family drama.

  • Greenjones: You’re posting stills from it as we speak. When will it be released outside of the States though?

We haven’t been given that information yet. I’m just taking some quick and nasty screencaps as I watch on HBOGo. I’ll try to track down a ripped copy later from someone I know (if we don’t get another one sooner). I’m sure it’ll turn up online soon, especially now that we know HBOGo has it as well. A lot more people have access to that than Verizon.

  • Anyone found it yet on somewhere accessible outside the US?

I’m this close to having a look on /tv/. I don’t want that. Nobody wants that :(

Gendry has no last name. You need to be a noble bastard to have a regional surname. Ellaria, Jon and Ramsay all have noble fathers who have acknowledged them publicly. Gendry is no one to the realm.

  • OT: The site should do a post about that Kickstarter for the Sean Bean and Charles Dance version of Macbeth. Grant the Starks some revenge!

  • Annual shallow Robert Boake appreciation comment. This year with added leather jacket.

Loving the extra Roose we seem to be getting this season.

  • Ser Lemoncakes:

Not by much. Michael McElhatton said in a recent interview that he wouldn’t be as heavily featured as he was last season. I see him being in four episodes at the very max.

  • Ours is the Fury,

Great video – over. 7 minutes long! Glad to see that D&D are finally trying to explain some important background and inner workings of Westeros – also good segue into difference of Dorne.

  • Matt,

I think McElhatton meant he’d be in fewer episodes but that he would actually have more to do in the episodes in which he features. He said something like, his scenes were “full-on”.

    LORAS,

Better leave that for someone else to do than to get one of the admins here to something illegal.

As far as bastard surnames go, that’ll also be relevant when we meet Alayne Stone.

I checked /tv/ and it isn’t there either I AM DYING HELP

  • Sean C.,

I confused her with Mya Stone for a second and was this close to leaving a really stupid comment about how we probably wouldn’t see her in the series.

  • In this behind the scenes video posted above you can see ramsay and roose meeting in moat cailin. In the bastard video they meet at the dreadfort ramsay has a beard here is does not so they will meet early in the season at the dreadfort then roose will leave and they will meet at moat cailin at the end of the season. Also the behind the scene feature reveals that ramsays hunting will be in episode 2. As an aside reek will also be along for the hunt as you can see him hobbling in the background.

  • I can’t believe this video’s been on HBO Go for hours already and nobody uploaded it on YouTube yet.

  • Woah at indira dress. Between her dress, cersei armor and Margery season two get up I’m starting to think quarthian breastless robes wouldn’t have look so weird after all

Also in the Bastards video, you get a glimpse of a thoroughly broken Reek in the background of the Dreadfort interior scene between Roose and Ramsey. Alfie looks great! Like someone straight out of an insane asylum.
Sorry, no crazy hillbilly hat on Walda.
These two weeks are going to drag!

  • Damnit where is the video?? The one true King of Westeros will not suffer such insolence! If the video is not uploaded within the next 2 hours I will sacrifice you all to Melisandre’s fires! Now someone bring me 2 hard boiled eggs and spiced wine, it’s going to be a long night!

  • That bastards preview was so great!!! Loved the interaction between Roose and Ramsay! Also Ellaria was showcased. YEAAAS! MOAR!

  • TheMannis:

Yeah, I’m really disappointed by the lack of cooperation. These HBO Go videos are usually uploaded somewhere public less than an hour after they are available in the system. I hope HBO uploads it to their official YouTube channel, at least.

  • It’s ok people. Its just a video. No need to fret about it. It will end up here aftef some time anyway.

  • Ser Lucas

Usually HBO has the tendency to be late for some of their videos like the recap season 3 video simply because they are assholes, so no thanks i don’t want to calm down .

  • JamesL,

Oh yeah, they exist for tv shows. From what I undertstand, critics are not alowed to write reviews or give their options until after a certain date. I’m not 100% why, but they do it for a lot of shows, no matter how good or bad they are.

  • Snowleesi

”This content is currently unavailable” , who ever invented regional video block needs to be put down like a dog and shot to death .

  • Snowleesi,

Thank you, you kind kind person.

You have a great amount of decency for putting me out of my misery.

Download the MediaHint Firefox Add On if you are not currently in the US.

Credit goes to Carrie for that. Goodbye shitty Canadian Netflix!

  • Well, the summary form the video is interesting. if I remember correctly, Roose legitimises Ramsey’s claim to his house and name. And we read that Ramsey apparently killed his own true-born siblings to get this claim. I don’t know if this aspect will play a role, but it will be nice to see the tension between father and son, with Ramsey hating his bastardy and not wanting to be called “Snow”. Maybe we will see Roose legitimise Ramsey later on in the season, or Ramsey putting pressure on him to do so.

  • Sorry for the rant guys it’s just annoying when far less interesting videos have been put out immediately after they aired yet important ones like this are left out .

  • Someone please upload it to youtube! The video player on the “xfinity” site doesn’t really play with my internet. This is annoying!

  • Ellaria looks weird which is awesome! And it’s now offficial, the Dornish accent is something between British and Spanish. Roose and Ramsay’s family reunion looks to be a heartfelt one for sure. 19 days!

EDIT: Internationals, download Media Hint on Chrome. It worked for me…

  • jentario,

This. Just did it. Works for me now. Nezzer, try it.

Just this line by Roose is worth it:
“Walda, this is Ramsay Snow, my bastard.”

    So curt. So cool.

  • Nezzer,

If the Roose isn’t loose, then I don’t know what is.

Also the Dornish turned out quite well, didn’t they? I love Indira or Niobe as I still think of her.

  • JonSnow17,

I have been visiting this site frequently since Season 3, and it seems to me that the administrators do all they can as much as they can. There were several 30 second promos on HBO last year that took days to reach the Internet. Sure, it’s nice to see Ellaria, but there were like 10 seconds and 3 lines from her. It’s not a big deal. And we are rapidly approaching the premiere now, so the promotional footage will exponentially increase and not all of it can possibly be covered with haste.

  • house snow:
Woah at indira dress.Between her dress, cersei armor and Margery season two get up I’m starting to think quarthian breastless robes wouldn’t have look so weird after all

    Word lol

It looks like we just found Meera’s lost fishing net.

  • Mariya Martell,

could you tell the name of the video? i have to look it up on my youtube app

Nevermind, i typed the link in and surprisingly, braught it to me! thanks sooo much!

  • So fucking amazing! Better than all the other trailers, just as I expected after reading the previous comments. Now I have only 3 hours of sleep…

  • Thank you, Snowleesi, and Mariya Martell. You’re kind souls!

Ohh, Ellaria is awesome! Even if she raided Leia’s slavegirl wardrobe a bit.

  • I was hoping and kind of expecting that Ellaria would take the place of Taena Merryweather from the books in later seasons in terms of her relationship with Cersei, and then later take Nymeria Sand’s role on the small council, but based on their interaction in this Bastards video, I’m thinking perhaps not. Shame.

  • Troublesome Birdsong,

I actually think that could be a good thing considering Ellaria should be in Dorne by that time, and i am awfully worried about the future of Dorne/Iron Islands on the show at this point

  • House Olivegarden,

The thing is, she’s barely involved in the Dorne storyline. She gets shuffled off to the Water Gardens and appears later when Balon Swann arrives and that’s about it. Unless they make her a much more prominent character and maybe use her to help introduce Arianne, I’m not sure what she’d be doing. It’s a bit like the show keeping Gendry relevant by merging him with Edric Storm, otherwise his character would have just faded into the background.

  • Baela Targaryen,

Thanks, that was fantastic. A nice mix of old and new clips indeed.

On an unrelated note: Mole’s Town. Doesn’t it look very odd, to keep the name but have a considerable amount of it above ground? It would’ve worked better as the village Arya and Sandor turn up in. I hope they keep in at least one doll-ripping scene. Arya doesn’t really need one to show how dark a place she’s in, but Sansa’s might as well stay.

  • Troublesome Birdsong,

I hope they use Ellaria next season to introduce the other Dornish characters. It would be disorientating if there are suddenly just brand new characters (Doran, Arianne etc) on screen with no one we recognize. I can imagine Ellaria riding through the streets of sunspear on her horse being tailed by the Dornish lords and then she enters Sunspear tower and then we meet Arianne and some sand snakes. They’ve already heard the news of Oberyn’s death and Ellaria gives them the details. They decide something must be done about it and decide to go to the water gardens to convince Doran to act.

I’m wondering if they’re going to write out Lady Olenna Tyrell the way she is in the books or if they’re going to keep her around….

  • Could Walda appear in more than one episode? I don’t see how Ramsay meeting Roose in episode 2 works with the whole Yara thing…

  • Just noticed Ellaria and Oberyn picking a bed partner out of a number of girls. They really are going all out with that relationship, which is great!

  • Both Ned & Robb are in the video and after aslo this this time, it still hurts. Other than that, it was a great video especially the exchange between Oberyn & Cersei. EPIC.

  • I showed my unsullied brother the video and he thought ellaria was shae for a second. possible problem?

  • I hope Pedro Pascal gets an opening credits spot. That would be so awesome to see the Martell sigil alongside the other great Houses. Indira will probably be guest star status.

  • Joshua Atreides,

that interview which was on wicnet a few weeks back stated he’d be recurring, so he’ll likely be in the end credits.

But I could see Indira Varma getting an opening credits spot next season – I really doubt they’d have cast her if the role was as small as it is in the books. And we could still get Arianne, or Quentyn, to get the sigil for the credits.

  • You know what’s funny, I’m usually the only one defending Sansa in front of my unsullied friends who hate her. I never even liked Sansa much in the book but I think some of you guys have rubbed off on me :’)

  • Satin:
    UnbowedUnbentUnhodor,

since he grew up in King’s Landing, yes.

    Hounded,

Olyvar seems to be the new brothel manager. Let’s hope that job isn’t like being Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Ha! Good one. Almost snorted coffee through my nose. But LF would totally be Snape (chronological order bedamned!)

Thank you for the vid upload, people! :)

  • I can’t believe they white washed Fat Walda!
I was hoping they would cast Aunt Loo from Deadwood.

  • mariamb: Awesome indeed!

Assuming that the show will take us to Dorne, I’m hoping that Ellaria will take on the role of one or more of the Sand Snakes. It would be a shame not to have more of Indira Varma. Also, the Roose-Ramsay interaction looks amazing.

    Only 19 days!

Nineteen days? OMG. That’s a little over two weeks!

  • I hate watching these snippets out of context. The scene where Cersei meets the Horny Dornishmen is meh and trite. I guess its there to show the apparent difference in how the Martels view bastards, which is good I guess. I don’t know. It just seemed blah. Maybe forced dialogue? I’ll have to see it in the full scene.

  • Hollyoak: Nineteen days? OMG. That’s a little over two weeks!

OMG OMG OMG. That’s one week and 5 days! And its my birthday today too!

  • Rygar,

happy birthday! Did you have cake?

I think some of that scene is about putting off Tywin and Cersei, actually. (Especially since Cersei is not so subtly being a bitch to Ellaria.) The situation where Ellaria and Oberyn are all over each other in front of Tyrion seems to have the same purpose.

  • I’m still convinced ellaria is eventually going to be in Cersei’s confidence and have a seat on the council taking the role of both Merryweathers from the book

  • HERE COME THE MARTELLS. PROMOTING EQUALITY SINCE WHENEVER.

Saw the clip! It seems like the difference between cultures will be showcased very early on and it will be magnificent. Take that you rest of Westeros bastards :P!

@Rygar: your cell screen is too bright. Fat Walda is rather greyish on mine.
And Happy Birthday, you little devil!

  • Bro do you even podcast? Here’s a season 4 preview podcast that was just released noobs.

    http://m.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/firewall-iceberg-show-episode-8-game-of-thrones-the-100-doll-em-more

    Positives:
    1) Bronn gets epic screen time :)
    2) Episode 2 is phenomenal partly due to spending half the episode in 1 location
    3) Tywin Lannister and Diana Rigg have great scenes
    4) some interesting stuff going on at the wall
    5) New Daario is a much better fit than old Daario

    Negatives
    1) Reintroduction of Daario was poorly handled
    2) Sepinwall can use less of Ramsay Snow though he admits that this season he feels more like a human being/character than a plot device

  • Sorry for the Boy Who Cried Wolf Syndrome. I was being facetious about my birthday. How many times on here has someone posted about “yay and its my birthday that day” when a date is set for new GoT info being released?

    I’m actually a summer child.

  • Rygar,

We went over this. Aunt Loo is Strong Belwas.
EDIT: OMG it’s your birthday?! It seemed like only a couple of weeks since the last one! ZOMG BBQ!!! #happybiryhday #twittersluts #hashtagsareterrible

  • Great clip. Man that looks like a lot of work…but I guess when you are passionate and love what you do, it certainly doesn’t feel like it!

Uhhh and Roose with Ramsay, the deranged, diabolic duo, Roose the man with the plan and Ramsay the man who puts that plan in action…well with various degrees of adaptation..

    Bolton family time:

“Roose: Your whench of a mother never told you the truth…that whore…
    Ramsay: Yeah what truth?
Roose: I am your feckin’ father!
Ramsay: Cool! Not shut up you old feckin’ bastard! I got some cocks to cut off!
Roose; You’re the bastard, bastard! I have some Starks to flay…!”

The one thing that is a bit worrying, even at this stage of the show, is the ever increasing budgets…I know they have to, I’m glad they can, but I hope they can keep a lid on it…even with “True Blood” and “Boardwalk Empire” coming to an end…

Love that shot of the snow and the woods, and Moletown…
