Another featurette showcases weapon training for season 4
By Hear Me Roar on in Media.

This video has surfaced recently, so far only in low def, but it will do. We get to see the staging and the training for a number of fights (duels and otherwise) and full blown battle scenes from S4. How glad are we that Neil Marshall is back? Very! The directors, actors, and first and foremost the Sword Masters CC Smiff and Tommy Dunne, and Senior Armourer Natalia Lee, sound off on all the different aspects of the stunts involved.

Once more, beware of spoilers. You could learn about action-related plot points from the new footage and commentaries.

Hear Me Roar: Many bits are actually quite interesting for us readers as well, as they reveal how they plan to adapt the story. I love the catapult bit at the end, by the way.

It’s odd, at the 2 minute mark they have Gregor’s greatsword next to a Clegane shield and a dagger. In all the production stills or clips taken from his scenes in Season 4 he is never once holding a shield (even when he has his helm on). The only other time he uses a shield is during the jousting in Season 1.

On a more positive note, Oberyn’s spear looks awesome up close! And all the cool details on the Thenn weaponry too; props to Tommy Dunne!

Celtic-esque designs on the Wildlings’ swords and axes? Pretty cool, considering they’re meant to be somewhat analogous to Pictish tribes before the Kingdom of Scotland was formed proper.

I just rewatched the entirety of season 1 yesterday and it’s amazing to see how the show has evolved. It’s always been excellent, but it gets grander and grander.

    Michel,

Hmm, if either dies I’d expect it to be Allister. Tormund has been upgraded to main cast (he even got his own poster) so I’d be kinda surprised if they killed him off. He has a bigger role to play in Season 5 than Allister (unless they make Allister the one who “kills” Jon, though I wouldn’t be a fan of that move) All that being said, I would prefer Allister going out like a badass againts the giants if he has to go.

We also have that shot of Jon riding slowly below the Wall. So my guess is that we’ll have Tormund’s attack concurrently with the attack against the Wall. Then Thorne and Slynt will send Jon to assassinate Mance. And then the much anticipated “Stannis! Stannis!” because those images seem to have been shot during the day

interesting video, liking the red vipers spear i wouldnt be suprised if tormund killed Ser Aliser in that fight. Which I’d probably be okay with, as long as he doesnt have any further role in the books, him being killed in battle is much more dramatic than him just getting sent off to some other castle by jon. Also wouldnt be suprised f they killed off Grenn as well in the place of Donal Noye, as I think he was also sent packing to another castle along the wall by jon. However, they need to keep Janos Slynt and Tormund alive as they have roles to play later on

The battle at Castle Black looks like it is going to be quite different from the book. I know it’s more dramatic for there to be man-to-man/woman combat with swords, but I will miss Jon leading a small group of archers from atop one of the towers. Also, if the battles happen simultaneously and Jon is down below fighting the raiders from the South then he won’t be on top of the Wall repelling Mance’s attack from the North. I hope we still get “The Wall is yours, Jon”. It’s such a huge moment for the character. I hope that isn’t lost just to get a cool sword fight with Styr.

    Oberyn Wan Kenobi,

Well Ramsay’s accomplice girl Myranda is credited in her CV as appearing in episodes directed by Alex Graves and by Alik Sakharov. We know from the shooting in Belfast featurette from last week that her scene hunting with Ramsay is in episode 2, directed by Alex Graves. (I also know from that girl who was answering questions from the first three episodes of s4 which she’d seen as screeners.) So that leaves Myranda to have a scene in an Alik Sakharov-directed episode, so either 6 or 7.

Since this weapons feature shows Ramsay fighting Ironborn shirtless and previously we’ve had glimpses of Ramsay boning Myranda, I think that perhaps the Ironborn will attack whilst Ramsay mid-coital with her and perhaps she’ll be killed, hence the blood. Then Ramsay will face them and somehow drive them out of the Dreadfort.

That’s all I can think of. I suppose he’ll have a garrison to help him or last minute help from his daddy.

I had the same thought. Once they killed off Irri it became clear that any minor character is in danger of being prematurely killed in order to keep the cast size somewhat manageable. Since we would know by know if Noye was cast, someone’s got to take his place. As you said Grenn is expendable. :(

    Ashara D,

My Aikido sensi can do everything Syrio Forel did, but for real, more elegantly, faster and without breaking his bokken, and with his opponents ending up piled in a heap at the point that served him best strategically, rather than scattered around in a way that made it easy for them to get up and surround him and attack him from behind. (I am nowhere near so good – it takes lots of practice. Oh, and it is possible to cut with a wooden sword.)

Aikido is non-competitive and mostly weaponless, you use weapons to broaden your consciousness, adjust your maai. The sword part derives from the Edo-era Shinto-ryu Kenjutsu – you learn traditional moves that are sort of a ritual re-enactment of famous samurai duels, where you do moves like ‘jump from the boat, cross the bridge, duck under the cherry tree, wade the stream, knee-walk through the tea-house’ or whatever the original samurai was supposed to have done.

The modern Japanese sword-fighting art is called Kendo. It is much more direct than the Akido-style, as Kendo is a competitive sport, with points scored for each cut or thrust that hits the target. Both of them have a lot more faffing about than the original budo, where the name of the game was to kill an opponent each time you lifted your weapon – peasants have gained some rights since the Edo period.

Anyway, there’s a big ritual/Shinto/water element to Shinto-ryu kenjutsu, which I think was borrowed by the Braavosi. Aikido seems to have kept that aspect more than Kendo, although the competitive aspect of Kendo is better for keeping things real and keeping you on your toes.

Of course, you can always learn Western-style fencing. And any of the above will keep you super fit (except a very slow style of Aikido eg. Ki society, although that is good if you are really unfit/recovering from injury and want to ease into training.) Tai Chi seems to have ‘water dancer’ type moves, too (In slow motion).

What they actually do in the TV series doesn’t appear to be any of the above: pure stage fighting, done for dramatic effect, carefully choreographed to be replicated over an over in order to get those amazing camera angles. Even Tormund’s forward roll in this preview was not so fast or smooth as a practised martial artist’s would be (I bet his stunt double has done martial arts, though.)

    KG,

I prefer the medieval english fighting method which was to get drunk and then batter someone with a sword.

Just had a crazy thought after reading the comments. What if it’s Thorne who kills Ygritte? That would add more drama/tension between Thorne and Snow to their already sour relationship.

    Hand of the Kingslayer,

    Deathdreams,

Thanks for the responses guys but I’m not seeing it. Might it be because I’m in the UK ?

I don’t have it either. It has nothing to do with localisation, as my sister got the update. And she has only the basic version. I paid for the published books and I’m feeling robbed here. It could have something to do with OS version? I have iOS 4.2, or whatever the version is that Apple deemed my iPod was worthy of.

    Mariya Martell,

Yeah its annoying. I just can’t see any sign of it. Why couldn’t GRRM just release it on his blog? Hopefully he still will.

What a fun chapter. Here are some of my predictions for future book events:

    1. Brown Ben gets the “thanks” he’s got coming. Probably cheerfully done by Jorah.
    2. Jorah takes over the Second Sons
    3. Remember the talk about how scary he looked when Tyrion saw him after escaping?
    4. “Mount to dread.” He’s coming back for Dany, and he won’t ask nicely this time.

    Tyrion Pimpslap,

Those scenes you described and depicted from the books, helped those uncertain of
Jon’s dual roles at this point, and questioning his resolvestrength of
    leadership and
character. I experienced little doubt but cheered on the
    ensuing battle.
. I wonder what perception the viewers may take from eliminating those pivotal scenes ? . At least there is the homecoming to Castle Black, complete with Pyp & Grenn and maester Aemon. Still missing Donal Noye though.
The set people never disappoint with their realism, for detailed props.

You think Jorah would rape Dany? I don’t see it. I don’t think he would violate the woman he loves and force her to do that. I really want Jorah to kill that fuckstain Daario Naharis though. Please George, make it happen.

    Hodoreo,

No, not rape; it did come out sounding like that, though. I meant. “Nice army I have here, eh, Khaleesi? You need an army, as I recall. I can make that happen.” He will leverage the daylights out of his new position.

    Tyrion Pimpslap and Wildseed

I believe Neil Marshall said in an interview, that was posted here a while ago, that there will be a couple of “free falls” off the Wall, three simultaneous battles and a couple of beheadings in ep 9, if I remember correctly. So I am positive that we might see even a little bit of Jon taking lead atop the Wall. I have a feeling Thorne will either be kept so he stabs Jon in the end, or he will die in the battle, giving the reins to Jon. There’s no way they can work around the importance of Jon’s character development this season. D and D have already complimented Kit’s sword fighting skills, and Kit himself says this is the seasons where his character has, so far, the most to say and do of all his seasons. Wildseed is right about the support Jon currently has at the Wall. They brought Sam back early and I hope they have Measter Aemon say “kill the boy” to Jon at the right moment this season, or even during the battle. It would be very poignant. I’m not sure how the structure of the episode will look, or how much they will be able to put in. We might even get extra minutes like with Blackwater. If it were at all possible, I would love the episode to end with Stannis offering Winterfell to Jon, and then Jon being made LC in 10, but a woman can only wish.

    Jaqen,

The Dothraki Sea is north of Slaver’s Bay, which analogs to ancient Egypt or Carthage in the real world, to Valyria’s ancient Rome. Westeros is largely based off Western Europe, but is about the same size as South America. The North is Scotland, King’s Landing (in the books) is based off medieval London & Paris, the Reach is analogous to France and Dorne is Spain, with elements of the inhospitable nature of the Welsh Marches which prevented Wales from being conquered by invaders for centuries.

Good luck with ADWD, if you’re a fan of Tyrion, Jon or Dany then you may be quite disappointed. They have some decent material, but also way too many chapters (about half of the entire book) but overall it’s a good read, especially the post-AFFC chapters.

Why would Winterfell be Glasgow? Edinburgh is the Scottish capital.

I get a definite Wales vibe from the Eyrie and the Vale.

I got the impression, like you, that the North was North England (very different to S. England – they even worked in the Northern distaste for being called Southerners.) Beyond the Wall was Scotland, going by GRRM’s comments about the Wall being inspired by Hadrian’s Wall, and the Wildlings by Picts.

    Ashara D,

On learning swordfighting: you can learn swordfighting in several different ways. First, several swordfighting traditions have made it to the present day, including several Chinese traditions (I would recommend Chen-style Tai Chi), the Japanese tradition (including Kendo and Iaido). While European martial arts do not have a continuous tradition, there are several groups who can teach you European martial arts based on fighting manuals from the time and realistic equipment.

    Here’s one example.

just because sterling castle is the gate way to the north, pound sterling, i was thinking the dreadfort might be edinbourgh due to its location se of sterling much like winterfell is nw to the dreadfort. sterling = winterfell and edinbourgh castle = dreadfort. winterfell even looks a bit like sterling.

Nearly a waste of fighting scenes. I really can’t explain it.
There so much knowledge of medieval weapon fighting nowadays that is surprisingly naive not to use it.
It’s not a question of believability but why use stage fighting and stunts when clearly it could kill a man in an instance (for example, turning your back to an opponent) when most medieval fighting styles are available and, in many cases more spectacular and scenic than cheap rolling on the ground.
It’s all out there and every experienced person would be willing to help. Pity.

    Valaquen,

Winterfell would more than likely be York, considering the Starks are based on the Yorks and The Lannisters are based the Lancasters from The War of The Roses.
