Entertainment Weekly releases 6 new pictures from Game of Thrones Season 4

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively released six new pictures from Game of Thrones Season 4! This new batch of promotional stills features a few new shots of Daenerys, including one in her new throne room, Margaery and Joffrey at the royal wedding, and Jaime and Cersei. But most excitingly, we get a look at Arya with a familiar sword.

  • Cool pics, but in case you haven’t spotted yet, GRRM has announced on his blog that he’s going to be releasing another chapter sample

  • Wow, that look in Maise’s eyes…

I’m stoked! This damned season needs to begin already, before I piss meself!

  • Ashara D,

Piece by piece, it’s coming. It’s not being released so much as its oozing towards us…

He says that D and D have seen the chapter, so mayhaps its an important one… We shall see.

  • Atomix,

No this is another chapter, it was just announced. It’s not the Tyrion one. Should be available on GRRM’s site ‘soon’

  • Tori Targaryen,

The heading are always people’s names, right, so whose name would be “mercy”. If I had to guess I’d say Arya ’cause she’s had many names over AFFC and ADWD and she may be “gifting” some folks soon. Hehehehe.

  • Been rewatching S3 and I think I’m going to miss original Daario. Original Daario may not have looked anything like book Daario but he had a certain flair about him that made him good for the role. This new guy is handsome but also really generic and dull, not right for a character like Daario imo.

  • JamesL,

Barbie Daario wasn’t convincing as a warrior/ sellsword, at all. Also, he couldn’t act, which was the main problem. New Daario, can act and looks convincing in the role. I’m sure naysayers will be convinced when the season airs.

  • Tori Targaryen:
I agree, this Daario looks like he can actually be a tough sellword! That’s one of the things the last Daario lacked. That and good acting for example.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap:
    Fire And Blood,

FaBio, did you receive screeners for the new season? If so, can we expect your review in the coming week?

There is “a list.” I am on the list. They haven’t told me anything else… but GoT screeners are extremely hard to come by these days. I have a feeling I’m going to be waiting for a second printing, if that’s even happening. Yikes!

  • Greenjones:

I’m guessing Arya. Ran says that it answers a question people have been trying to figure out since 2011. So who/what is Izembaro maybe.

  • Ghost,

I posted somewhere else that I wanted it to be the messed up Damphair Chapter he teased at a Con but didn’t actually read, but if its an Arya chapter I’m going to flip with happiness.

  • The title is very unusual, since titles refer to the POV character, and it makes me think it’s Arya, since she’s the one who’s been changing identities and having her new personas in the chapter titles (“The Blind Girl”, “The Ugly Little Girl”)… Having “Mercy” as a name/nickname of a character/persona is still unusual, but more likely in Arya’s case.
If it weren’t for the title, “answers lots of questions people have had since 2011” would make me think it’s Brienne, or Jaime, or maybe Melisandre.

  • Ghost: I’m guessing Arya. Ran says that it answers a question people have been trying to figure out since 2011. So who/what is Izembaro maybe.

Nope, gotta be Brienne and “Sword!”. The answer has been around for a couple of years now; with the release of ADwD, the alive/dead question was answered, so my guess is this will help fill in the events in Brienne‘s timeline, and hopefully for triPod and Ser Hyle as well.

  • Does anyone else think these look a little overly touched-up compared to the pictures we usually get? There’s an airbrushed quality to a lot of the colors that’s really fake looking.

  • why is Dany so looking scared sitting next to her dragon
i mean she is the mother of dragon right ?
that means the dragons obey her or im a wrong and the dragons gonna terror everyone or anyting when they want?

    just curious

  • Drogo,

She is watching the other two rip a goat to shreds. And Drogon gets a little snippy. It’s her, “Oh shit, they ARE dragons” moment.

  • Kilgore Tully:

nope, she is scared of Khal Jhaqo who has just approached her and her horse-sized bird with a 50,000 strong khalasar. ;-)

I thought the same thing at first, but after seeing his attitude (for lack of a better word) in the featurettes released so far, he looks a damned good Daario. Early days yet, but it certainly gave me a lot of hope.

  • Spearwife,

Well she is the most popular character in the show , get over it. You wont find any show watcher giving a shit about Stannis for example .

She is watching her dragons eat and is terrified at how much it is going to cost to feed them. She is already regretting having three kids.

  • 49 comments and I’m the first one to notice that lightbringer spelled “Daenerys” wrong?

    Fix that please!

To overcome fear you must become a castingdirector and cast Mads Mikkelsen as Euron

  • I have just heard the news that the Season 4 premier is, for UK viewers, a simulcast with the East Coast of the US. You can watch it at 2am on 7th April in the UK.

  • How does everyone pronounce arya? is it ahh-yah or ahh-ree-yaa. I noticed Caitlyn/ned said ahh yah but it seems they’ve switch to ahh-ree-yah in s3? just wondering

  • Ser Osis of Liver: Nope, gotta be Brienne and “Sword!”. The answer has been around for a couple of years now; with the release of ADwD, the alive/dead question was answered, so my guess is this will help fill in the events in Brienne‘s timeline, and hopefully for triPod and Ser Hyle as well.

Sword was a question from before 2011 in aFfC and has been answered by GRRM. There really isnt much to figure out with that situation.

  • Satin,

Oh that’s interesting cause I’m also from ‘Northern’ Germany and thinking about it I’m always switching between Are-ya and Ah-ya. :D

  • SM4e,

  • Tyrionisthebest: I’d love to see Stannis in more promo stuff. Dany can be a fan favorite it’s not a reason to ignore all the others characters.

Rosalie: Everyone is free to have his opinion, you don’t have to say to them “shut up”. Dany maybe has the most fans but also the less polite.

  • Satin,

  • Not sure if this has been posted here, but these are from studio sangeet, that’s responsible for some of the prosthetics in the show

    https://m.facebook.com/creaturesincltd/albums/534113726627338/

They show not only Ian Whyte’s giant from last season but also others that haven’t appeared in the show yet. And there’s other stuff herehttp://instagram.com/studiosangeet (their instagram) like Catelyn’s throat cut and Jaime’s stump.

  • Al:
Tyrionisthebest: I’d love to see Stannis in more promo stuff.Dany can be a fan favorite it’s not a reason to ignore all the others characters.

Why don’t people understand that Stannis’ arrival is supposed to be a surprise? Seriously, he won’t show up for most of the season, they out of nowhere… Bam on the wildlings. They don’t want to spoil that.

  • UnbowedUnbentUnhodor,

Well you have to remember that GRMM is American, so the “r” IS pronounced. I recall reading that Ar-ya (two syllables) is correct. This makes Michelle Fairley the only person to get it right. (Taking her accent into consideration!)

  • SM4e,

Also, I totally agree with your points about Stannis. It’s a surpriiiise! He’ll get his badass moments soon enough (this is not meant to start a debate how much the show has or has not fucked up Stannis, so please, let’s not.)

  • Satin,

Btw, I hope they can still make Stannis’ arrival a surprise after they pretty much spoiled it in 3×10. They could for instance let him be refused in 4×06 by the Iron Bank and end with Stannis deciding to go back to Dragonstone.
By that the Unsullied would think he’s not interested in The Wall anymore and they could redeem his further actions by the famous speech about how Davos made him remember of his duty in 4×10. :)

  • book readers:

the last pic with Dany looks to me like the end of ADWD. does anyone else think this? it seems way too early in the show for them to get that far… I wouldn’t think they would reach that till at least end of season 5.

or am I wrong about this scene?

  • SM4e,

I could imagine they’ll do something like that, or at least make it seem like he’s not going to make it in time, only to have him heroically save the day.

    Kevin,

it’s definitely not the scene from the end of ADWD. (If nothing else, Drogon would have to be much bigger by then.)

  • De koupling unt meine unterwasserboot ist kaput.

Thought i would join in with our German friends with some of my own. For non german speaker the above is a phrase to trot out to show off to your other non German speaking friends to show them how cultured you are, your German friends will also be impressed with your prowess and ability if you say it to them. :)

  • Courtjezter,

I am very impressed! (Where is that from?)

(Also, please forgive the linguistic gymnastics, but it’s fun to randomly meet other Germans on the internet. Doesn’t happen that often. :) )

  • Satin:

The North seems to be based on Scotland or northern England, and the show has gone with that, casting mostly northern or Scottish actors in those roles, and having all of them use northern English accents, rather than RP. Therefore a hard “r” is much more logical than the soft “r”or the swallowed “r” of the Received Pronunciation or the southern accents. It should probably be pronounced the northern way rather than the American way (i.e. with a harder “r”), but it’s AR-ya in any case.

  • UnbowedUnbentUnhodor,

Catlyn was pronouncing the R, but because the accent is English it is a soft R. Like our Northern German brethren we, the English, do speak with a hard R. So the way she said it sounds like ah-ee-ah

  • Satin,

That is ok. I have no idea where it is from, but as i was in the military and grew up around the Dusseldorf area it was kind of a joke phrase we adopted just to make other English people think we know what we were talking about.

  • JamesL,

Agree, Ed Skrein might not have had the beard, but he was absolutely typecast Daario in other respects: simple, open, narcissistic, trusting, winning, and built like a sherman tank. If the two actors had to duel for it, the role would be his. If they had to command soldiers, my money would still be on Ed Skrein (even if he had only commanded a cross-fit class before). He looks more like Karl Drogo, more like the kind of guy who would pick up an arakh and learn to use it while mucking with his Essos mates rather than sticking with the sword he can trust to keep him alive and selling.

Michiel Huisman is an incredibly talented actor, but he looks complicated, dark. His brow furrows like he has had a hard life (Daario has had a hard life, but to Ed-Daario it’s a blast). Huisman has an asymmetrical hook in his smile that can look really cruel (eg. when he played Nureyev). He is slightly built and looks more like a rebel than a commander – better as a bad boy lover, but missing the meathead mateship quality that makes instant friendship with people like Greyworm and Jhogo natural and believable. They have also decided to ditch the Fabio hair – the only clue that Daario didn’t come from a Crannog-bog.

Having said all that, Huisman is a great actor, with a great script, on the set with the highest production values on TV. I’m not sure how he will find a Dario I can believe in, but I’m sure he can, and hope he has.

  • Annara Snow: The North seems to be based on Scotland or northern England, and the show has gone with that, casting mostly northern or Scottish actors in those roles, and having all of them use northern English accents, rather than RP. It should probably be pronounced the northern way rather than the American way (i.e. with a harder “r”), but it’s AR-ya in any case.

You are getting at it much more scientifically than I was. The accent I learned growing up was largely RP, or in some cases, some weird Standard American, which I really can’t place (East coast, probably?). So that’s why I’d probably default to RP to pronounce it (except as Chickenduck told me now, I’m totally wrong about that, but let’s say for the sake of the argument, I’m using RP British English). As for how the name is supposed to be pronounced, as long as they keep it halfway consistent on the show, I can live with it.

  • Deathdreams:

…that would be part of a recipe. A vegan one, apparently. (No eggs.)

    Courtjezter,

well, often these kinds of sentences are pretty dirty, but this one is harmless, just a bit weird.

  • Satin,
On Tool’s Aenima album they have a track called “Die eier von satan”.
It’s basically a very sinister sounding man giving a rousing speech in german. Every time he says “und keine eier” everyone cheers and shouts, but translated it’s a recipe for hash brownies or something.

  • i love that first photo, might have found my new twitter header

also, you Stannis stans that scream for more material but also scream for his entrance to be a surprise which has been spoiled, are raging hypocrites

finally i’m SO EXCITED for this sample chapter, ‘Mercy’ sounds like someone’s gonna die. That made me think of Theon (asha pov), Sweetrobin (Sansa pov) or anyone in Arya’s, although that wouldn’t be a mercy killing. All three of those have had titled chapters before and had unfinished aDwD arcs, although less so for Arya.

  • What’s up with Natalie’s face in that picture? she looks like she’s been stung by a thousand bees.

  • Kevin,

Seeing her with just the dragon, and the look of shock on her face I kinda thought it might be, but she gets kinda roughed up prior to that scene in the book. I’m thinking she looks too “nice” in this shot for it to be that point. Probably her watching the dragons tear-up a goat, as someone previously mentioned.

  • JamesL:

I tend to agree, but I’m going to wait for the season to air to be sure. This guy looks good, thanks to Treme we know is more than a decent actor, but he seems kind of blend (from what I can tell from the few excerpts anyway).

I guess they have a pretty hard time nailing this for TV. But wait and see.

  • That doesn’t look like Natalie Dormer at all. It’s probably a stand-in but I have no idea why a magazine would publish a picture with a stand-in.

  • UnbowedUnbentUnhodor:
How does everyone pronounce arya? is it ahh-yah or ahh-ree-yaa. I noticed Caitlyn/ned said ahh yah but it seems they’ve switch to ahh-ree-yah in s3? just wondering

Short answer is that, linguistically, there isn’t a significant difference. No one would misunderstand or confuse the pronunciations, as you could probably find all of them just within Winterfell.

    Long answer.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approximant

Basically, “Arya” has no proper consonants (technically, it is entirely sonorant with no obstruents). This means “Arya” is always going to be have more variation between accents, as sonorant sounds vary on a spectrum where obstruents are much more definite.

The “r” may or may not be pronounced by someone, to another one person’s ear, but the speaker could very well be using an R’ed (or “rhotic”) A that is unlike their other A’s. Phonetically different, but potentially not phonemically significant. Even two people with the same accent will pronounce a word slightly differently, at some level, so where you draw the line for “different” is significant. Having grown up partly in Boston, where you can hear all sorts of R’s on one block, I’m inclined to think of Ahhya and Arya as interchangeable to the point of neither being more correct than the other.

Y’s and W’s are funny things. They are semivowels, somewhat related to diphthongs. They add a very brief vowel to the onset of another vowel (which has some morphological significance not worth getting into). So “you” has a really brief “ee” sound before “ooh;” “whoa” smushes “oo” to the front of “oh.” Look at Ygritte; there is no vowel for that initial Y to latch onto, so it just becomes a full “ee” sound. So what I’m getting at is that “Ar-ee-uh” and “Ar-ya” pretty much use the exact same sounds, and the difference is a slight matter of cadence.

As for “Ah-ree-uh” vs “Ar-ee-uh,” there is no clear syllable boundary with two approximants next to each other, so all those vowely bits combine fluidly…sonorantly. Again, slight differences in cadence.

Someone else would probably hear me say “Ar-ya,” but in my head it sounds like I’m saying “Ar-ee-uh” but only minimally hitting that “ee” (think a quick version of the way they were yelling her name in the woods after the Joffrey incident).

I’m of the opinion that all-sonorant names are quite gorgeous on the ol’ earballs, and part of that is the natural variance they incur. /nerd

  • Kilgore Tully,

    That was awesome. Go Hawks!

I’m outta the loop. Is there a date yet for the new chapter?!! He be droppin more hints…… I think this bitch will be out in time for christmas. Ok, so that’s a stretch… but one can dream. Of winter, this winter.

  • KG,

That’s hilarious! Classic. Perfect choice of song. Yeah, he’s got some swagger there, but where in Essos is he finding all this cool armor with bears on it?? Now who wants to get some ink???

Also, yeah… Margaery is not lookin so hot. Has she been eating some pigeon pie?

And lastly, I am really taking what was once a juvenile joke between friends about the sexual weirdness of these twins waaay too far but I can’t help it now. I’m in deep. Does Jaime look like he’s trying to say something to ease Cersei’s concerns? This is usually the case. But here….

“Well, we can try without the golden hand, if you’d be more comfortable”

    Or is it just me.

I think there is a song about this on the Tool album mentioned upthread…

    ONLY 11 DAYS BITCHES!

I have to come back to this for a moment, and tell you that “Die Eier von Satan” can also mean “Satan’s balls.” I bet you needed to know that…

  • I’m surprised watching through the seasons again… People complain the Daario couldn’t act, but he’s more natural than Emilia Clarke, Finn Jones, Kit Harrington, Natalie Dormer, Rose Leslie etc. It hit home how stiff and awkward some of those drama school actors were after I watched True Detective. That’s where the real acting’s at
