Game of Thrones wins another award
By Ours is the Fury on in Awards.

Robert BoakeThe stunning locations across several countries are often regarded as a highlight of Game of Thrones, and so it’s no surprise the series made a strong showing last night at the 1st Annual Location Managers Guild of America Awards.

Thrones picked up two awards at the ceremony, including:

  • Outstanding Location Television Program
  • Outstanding Achievement by a Location Professional – TV Program,  Robert Boake

Boake has been with Game of Thrones since the premiere of the show in 2011. The Artisans: Shooting in Belfast featurette released two weeks ago features him discussing the challenges this season’s locations presented, working in Northern Ireland.

Ours is the Fury: Congrats to GoT and Robert Boake! Always happy to see the behind-the-scenes talent rewarded for their incredible work on the show.

    Cash Craig,

I’m hoping they can return to Morocco or maybe go to Spain for Dorne, but if they can’t find the money for it then they might as well use Croatia again. For Braavos they might use Trogir, or extended studio sets perhaps (hoping for the former) and Tyrion’s journey to the Rhoyne should use similar locations to those used for the road to Meereen.

Also hoping they can return to Iceland in the Summer, because clearly it can handle multiple arcs (Wildlings, Brienne & Pod, Arya & The Hound and The Vale of Arryn.

Um… Urrrr… Eh… The beach? Not big enough. Maybe pull a Star Wars and use matte paintings or green screens? Morocco would be good for the back alleys of Sunspear though. That scene in 301 where Margaery visits the orphanage was filmed there.

I have a feeling we’ll be getting loads more instances like Braavos this coming season where it’s largely set locations. Braavos in Arya’s arc will be the hardest, but it will at least require the House of Black & White to contain most of the action. Iron Islands will probably be the easiest new thread, because the throne room’s established and they just need a ship’s cabin really.

Also, and pardon me for piggy-backing on to a “reply” to yourself, jentario, with something that is not concerned with your post, but there was some discussion on another thread (which has now been pushed back) about what Dany’s armour should be like. This is more for general interest, but I found a website about women warriors in history and this is the link http://http://www.lothene.org/women/women.html Not all the women depicted are in “armour” as such. Back on topic – glad to see the show winning a few “gongs”.

Actually, Braavos shouldn’t be that hard. Look at Trogir, Croatia for instance. With some CGI backgrounds and redesigned sets, it could definitely stand in for Braavos. IIRC Doctor Who filmed a Venice episode there.

    jentario,

I had thought of that connection, and some of the streets did stand in for 19th century Provence in another episode that series (sorry, season :() so maybe they could use them for Oldtown? But we’ll see, the budget can probably only handle so many crews in a single country. They dropped the 3rd unit after one season in Morocco and now we’re seeing what other amazing things they can do with the budget.

The North will stay in NI, maybe some summer Iceland filming again, same with The Vale and Iron Islands. Essos can probably utilize more Crocations (as I’m now calling them :p) and Dorne will likely be very studio-based, but there are some great locations in Corsica, Italy and Spain which would be cool if they could afford to shoot there. ‘Shame there’s no going back to Malta either.

This is going to be the real challenge of adding numerous threads to the story. They said filming lasted 136 days, that’s 30 more than in the 2nd season I believe. They’ll need to get an early start this year to do it all (maybe even before this season’s over).

I think they would get rid of the Iron Islands plot or cut it a lot , either way there is no need to spend money on a location focused on characters nobody but book readers care about and not even all of them care about them, me being one of those .

    Tyrionisthebest,

You honestly can’t say this is a story “no one but the readers care about” since it hasn’t been put on screen yet. Obviously, one can’t care about the nonexistent.

Who knows? Maybe they’ll find a damn fine Euron actor that will suck in a cult Unsullied following. Maybe they won’t. The point is, that is not a good excuse to cut a storyline (especially since it contains a large chunk of action from the otherwise rather actionless AFFC). And again, this storyline is already making its mark- it’s not trailing off and unnecessary, it connects directly with other parts of the story and will continue to do so.

Can they cut around it? Probably. Will they? Maybe. Maybe not. I hope they won’t, personally since the Kingsmoot was awesome, and Euron is awesome and they seem to have a pretty large role in the battle of Meereen. It also wouldn’t require much screentime or sets/CGI (until the big battle, which SHOULD be huge). I think it pays off, unlike many other storylines in AFFC and ADWD.

Dude you got to be kidding me, many agree the Iron Islands plotline was one of the worst things about AFFC well that and half the characters missing plus the pacing and editing being god awful, if they are even so much as little important to the plot they can just cut the whole Kingsmoot and everything that happens there and just have Victarion arrive at Meereen and spare us of the boredom that those chapters had made us suffer through the 4th book . I understand you are one of those book readers that want absolutely everything from the books on the screen and in some universe that may be possible but that is not this universe, with 7 or 8 seasons they need to make drastic cuts and the Ironborn are one of them .

    Tyrionisthebest,

I am not “one of those readers”.
I thought AFFC was the worst book in the series, but not because of Dorne or the Iron Islands. A lot of people find it hard to relate to new characters, especially in AFFC when most of them are new POVs and most of the old POVs aren’t there, but I don’t think it’s fair to judge them solely on that front.
Aeron was a boring-as-fuck POV character and he will likely be cut, but both Asha(=Yara) and Victarion are very fun to read and have well paced arcs. The slow beginning will definitely be cut down, but imagine something like this:
Episode 3: set up for the Kingsmoot, with the Kingsmoot ending the episode (and that epic horn). This would be the only Iron Islands heavy episode in the season.
Episode 5: Euron and Victarion attack a village in the Reach, Euron sends Victarion to Dany. Cersei hears news of the Ironborn attacks at King’s Landing. Meanwhile, Yara flees to Deepwood Motte.
Episode 7: Stannis attacks Deepwood Motte
Episode 8: Stannis interrogates Yara about the events in the Iron Islands on their way to Winterfell. Victarion comes across Moccoro at sea. Theon and fake Arya arrive at Stannis’s camp.
Episode 9: Yara and Theon catch up. Stannis’s camp is attacked by the Freys and Manderlys in a big battle.
Episode 10: Moccoro and Victarion begin to bond, and the battle of Meereen is set up for season 6. Stannis is presumed dead in the North but revealed to be alive (depends on the book, really) and the fates of Theon and Yara are left to question.

Euron assumes a Mance-season3 like role as a guest star while Vic gets a recurring role. I think the story could add well needed action to the early parts of season 5.

    Dragonslayer,

No you are not. In 4 chapters, these storylines managed to do so much more than the other storylines in the book that it’s actually pretty sad. Did we really need so many Brienne chpaters when some of the early ones amounted to absolutely nothing? Did we really need THAT many Cersei chapters? Why do Arya and Sansa get so few when they are (along with Jamie) the only real anchors to the previous books’ story in AFFC? Meanwhile, Dorne and the Iron Islands reign above with actually well paced and interesting storylines. But I will admit Damphai is despiseable as a POV and that Areo is barely a character. Other than that, I enjoyed them the most in AFFC.

    Dragonslayer,

No not at all. The Kingsmoot gave us a nice point of view of the Ironborn. Victarion is a badass warrior, but quite the dumbass. Aeron is a fanatic, but his sense of logic is hilarious. Asha is one of my favourite characters. Euron is a mysterious schemer and a new serious player to the game. Kingsmoot will certainly be more interesting, than Cersei sleeping with Taena or throwing her wine on people. Doran revealing his plans to Arianne was one of the highlights of the book. Get some good actors to play Victarion (Ray Stevenson) and Euron (James Purefoy) and the show can do the same to them, that they did to Margaery and Olenna.

The writers have talked about trimming and cutting FfC and DwD material. I agree, but there’s no sense cutting off the leg of the golden goose.
They should do stuff like: cut Aeron, cut some Sand Snakes, replace Deepwood Motte with the Dreadfort, cut Jaime’s trips to Harrenhal and Darry, cut certain parts of the Myrcella plot, cut Quentyn’s journey… Still some things, should not be cut like: Euron and Victarion, the Kingsmoot, Siege of Riverrun…

I keep wondering how the heck they’re gonna be able to depict the extreme conditions necessary for Winter as the story comes to a conclusion. Interiors would be no problem at all but what about when Kings Landing and other cities and towns are covered in snow? Some CGI would work as in Dany’s Red Keep HOTU vision. But what about battle scenes? Would Iceland still be the right location for this stuff (one drawback being lack of forests) or will they need to find another country to film in seasons 6 and 7 (and possibly 8 if they take it that far)? How much does it cost to film in Norway, Sweden, etc? Is Canada a possibility?

They need to remedy this starting with next season. There isn’t much excuse for the North to be so green with no snow. Just look at the scenes of the wildlings south of the wall and the one of Ramsay hunting at the Dreadfort. It looks like it is still the middle of Summer. Winter will be arriving next season. Iceland in the Summer is beautiful and all, but Winter Is Fucking Coming, time to actually show it in the show.

Yeah I feel like season 5 needs to show a snow-storm hitting the north (the one that Stannis gets stuck in) and in the finale it should start to snow in king’s landing and the white crow should arrive signalling that winter has come. Then the promotional material for season 6 will be all like WINTER IS HERE.

I wonder how they can make it look cold and snowy in Dubrovnik? A mixture of filters, grading and special effects?

jentario: They need dunes for Dorne. Where can we get us some dunes?

See: Lawrence of Arabia. Epic dunes and no CGI.
…not that Lawrence of Arabia is a place they can go to shoot, but…

Generally, the more tourist/popular/mainstream the destination, the more expensive it is to shoot there (unless there are special tax incentives, etc., in that country especially to draw film crews, i.e., Canada). That’s why Italy and Spain are used rather sparingly, except in those giant budget spectaculars or when the story demands those specific locations. It’s much more expensive to get your permits and crew and house/feed everyone, etc.

It is too bad about Malta; I’ve been there, and it is beyond spectacular, from lush oases to parched and ancient cities. They also have this liquor called Bajtra made from prickly pears that is deeeeeeliiiissshhh.

    Hounded,

There was a post a few weeks ago where somebody linked some pictures of Dubrovnik and Split after a recent snowstorm. Maybe they could hire a local crew to shoot tons of background plates/footage of the Croatian locations covered in snow (assuming it snows there sometime in the near future). This could aid the establishing shots of Kings Landing and other locations so it isn’t all CGI. Just a thought…

    Hounded,

What I don’t understand is why was there more snow in season 1 at the Wall than there was in season 3? When Jon first arrives at the Wall in season 1 the land is covered in snow, but it was green when Ygritte and him looked at it from atop the Wall. I know they were going for contrast in that one shot, but even when Jon returns to Castle Black it still doesn’t look as cold/snowy as it did in season 1. Fake snow can’t be that difficult to pull off.

I’m very confused as to why people on here always automatically assume Dorne and the Iron Islands (and Aegon a lot too) stuff gets cut. For all we know Victarion could be the last one on the throne (lol). But seriously, they are still open plotlines that COULD be important so I don’t see the rush to cut them from people. One of the few plotlines that went on for way too long and having been completed by the end of ADWD with no discernible huge contribution to the main story was Brienne’s trip around the world and even that appears to be happening. A few main characters die this season, it’s not like they are going to give the dragons speaking parts all of a sudden.

    Sir Dosser,

I think when most people say EPIC in reference to AFFC they are referring to the poetic beauty that that book is. Cersei’s descent into madness, Sansa becoming Alayne Stone, Septon Meribald’s speech about broken men, the Dorne chapters (which retroactively will be some of the most tragic), Jaime’s struggle to be a true knight, UGH so much. It’s not as action packed as ASoS, but it’s a beautiful introspective and poetic 2nd act in an immense story. I love it. AFFC is my second favorite book next to ADwD.

I wish Kristofer Hivju got some more recognition.
He’s playing Tormund brilliantly and all he needs is some more humouristic scenes.
He just doesn’t seem to be getting the attention some other smaller roles are getting (Dianna Rigg comes to mind).

I agree, his screen time should have been bigger then the scraps he got.

Really weird to see so many trash on AFFC, in particular, the Iron Islands storylines.I really enjoyed the book and would love to see Asha tie in with the final plots in the last unreleased books.

The AFFC hate is really weird to see in the AFOIAF and here on WiC…I am really surprised so many people despise it.I personally love it, and am thankful that for once GRRM shuts up about Dany and Jon and brings up some backstory on Asha, Samwell, Brienne, and more.AFFC adds immersion to an already epic story.

    AFFC ROOLZ

Some people have different opinions than me, what is this sorcery ? Seriously thats that your post sounds like no offense !

Whether you like it or not it still doesnt cover the fact that most of what happens in that book doesnt make good television at all, its fine for a book medium if you like that stuff but in TV that doesnt cut it and the showrunners agree with me too which is why they said that season 5 is giving them nightmares .

Maybe they should embrace that different aspect of ASOIAF, set a whole new tone, instead of trying to please the annoying fanbois who can’t tell half the characters apart and whose ADD doesn’t allow them to watch GOT for anything but the swordfights and nude scenes and various assorted characters being “badass” …

    GOT Rewatch Report:

Watching The Climb. Such a good episode. The Sam and Gilly scene, the Bran scene, the Climb itself and the Littlefinger stuff, Arya and Mel… A really good episode. I don’t understand why people hated it so much (but the ending was definitely a bit of a cliche).

    Hand of the Kingslayer,

I loved the commentary with the Stark kids, even though Dark Wings, Dark Words would give them more to work with). Their remixes of the opening sequence are always a joy and Isaac had possibly my favourite quote of all the commentaries this season (the one about Tywin always dressing in tight leather :).

I wouldn’t call it my least favourite of the season either. Mhysa and TB&TMF both suffer from pacing issues. Tormund’s scene in 307 was definitely one of the few times he matched up to his book counterpart though. Nothing will come close to Kissed by Fire for me though, & I pretty much know Rains of Castamere scene-by-scene by now.

Love the episode too. I really quite like the last shot, it’s such a rare thing in this series and it’s nice to get a glimpse of idealised love… before it’s torn utterly down and drenched in blood.

    Hand of the Kingslayer,

They did a percussive version, after the “doo-doo-doo-duh-doo-doo” singing in season 1 and the beatboxing in season 2. For season 4 they’ll probably have to arm-fart the intro just to keep it fresh. I do like the fact they’re nowhere near as composed as the characters they play, they remind me of my own siblings.

I don’t have a problem with people disliking AFFC. As for how it translates to TV, it’s all speculation at this point. Then again about 99% of posts on this site are speculation.

Why oh why isn’t S04E10 titled A Cat of a Different Coat aka worst title ever.
