“Winter is Coming Live” chat “Maester” Bryan Forrest is what you could call a Westeros weapons expert and he’s a guy you want on your side as you try to take the Iron Throne. Each week Bryan will be discussing the different weaponry used in HBO’s original series Game of Thrones and this week he digs into the history and the meaning of Widow’s Wail.

If you already know all about Widow’s Wail, you can also check out the other great episodes of WOW, in which Bryan talks about the Stark ancestral sword, Ice as well as the mystical Wildfire.

Is Widow’s Wail the smaller of the two swords? Is its size considered acceptable?

    Diana,

I’m not sure what you mean by “acceptable”. In the book its shorter/smaller than Oathkeeper.

If you mean “is it useful as a weapon”, it’s still long enough to be used effectively, even though it’s shorter than Oathkeeper. It’s not into short sword length or anything like that. As it was made to be presented to Joffrey it was important that it be small enough for him to wield effectively, as he is smaller than Jaime.

Presumably it is a one-handed sword, whereas Oathekeeper is long enough to be a “bastard sword” and be wielded one-handed or two-handed as needed. Whereas Ice as a humongous greatsword could only ever be wielded as a two-handed sword.

    Andy Smith,

Try some Ad-Blocking Browser App? I hardly get any ads anywhere with that.
