Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 5 Preview – “First of His Name”

Sansa Stark inS4E5

“He sits the throne like he was born to it.”

From the official HBO synopsis: “Cersei and Tywin plot the Crown’s next move. Dany discusses future plans. Jon Snow embarks on a new mission.”

“First of His Name” is written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and directed by Michelle MacLaren, who also helmed last week’s episode “Oathkeeper.” This episode features the return of Kate Dickie as Lysa Arryn, last seen in season one. Several new images from “First of His Name” were released yesterday.

Ours is the Fury: Well, like Oz, I am enthusiastic about the return of Lysa, although probably not quite as ecstatic as he is. The action at Craster’s Keep looks like it should reach an entertaining peak as well. It doesn’t seem like we’re in for any White Walker-related surprises this week, but then, who knows anymore?

  • Im looking forward to Arya and The Hound more than anything. Having them featured one week and missing the next is really annoying. Hopefully they are in more episodes in the second half of the season

  • We won’t see the White Walkers again this season unless they keep the fight outside the cave (which I’m starting to fear could be cut, though I wouldn’t bet on it). That’s probably the reason they decided to go big with them in Oathkeeper (since there presence is rather minor this season).

Episode 5 should be alright. Hopefully it will surprise me in how good it turns out (like Oathkeeper did). It’s episode 6 I’m really waiting for (GIVE ME SOME REEK FOR FUCK’S SAKE). And of course the last three should be fun.

  • As a reader, it’s refreshing to see the show willing to become its own beast in earnest. A faithful retread of the novels is neither practical nor as satisfying as it sounds. The strength of film must be exploited, and last week’s chilling ending was the perfect way to leverage that collective asset. Hats off to the writers and the production as a whole for not sitting on their hands in static deference to the originating material. Their boldness suggests a bright and memorable future for the series on the screen.

  • Just speculation because I am as unsullied as anyone on the Craster Keep storyline – but it appears that Jon Snow’s attack may cause the diversion that helps Bran and crew get away… Just hoping and praying to the Seven that Ghost and Summer escape!

  • jentario,

Still sadly hoping for CH, but I agree that Bran will probably warg Hodor to escape. However, couldn’t Bran warg anyone within proximity?

  • Have the page number buttons disappeared? I can’t access the second and third pages in the ep 5 pictures thread.

  • zod,

Definitively? Huh. Ok…but some of those mutineers probably aren’t the sharpest sticks in the woods though.

  • Can’t wait to see Lysa show up again, she makes great telly! Looking forward to seeing all the Stark kids in an episode again, Arya looks fantastic with Needle in her hands again.

  • Hodor is probably the most ‘wargable” of Bran’s little band. His simple terms of reference ajd worldview would certainly be expanded by the experience. Team Hodor!

  • Hodor’s Bastard,

I think when Bran practices he could potentially warg anyone, but as is the normal human mind is too complex for him. Hodor’s simplicity is what allows Bran to take control. And yeah, this would have been the perfect way to introduce Coldhands, but… that’s not happening :(

  • I just watched Ep 4, I know, I know, I’m late… But holy fuck!?! That was insane. Was that the Night’s King at the end? Damn, the special effects people have outdone themselves, with Meereen as well. Was good to see Dany do something questionable for a change. And, I’ll be damned if Tyrion’s “Sansa’s not a killer, not yet” isn’t some sort of easter egg from the writers. Though, what the fuck Sam? Couldn’t keep your mouth shut?

On topic, preview is good. Cersei cutting out Marg is hilarious.

  • Hodor’s Bastard: Stannis who? You mean Melisandre’s bitch?

    Go Team Shireen!

Melisandre and Shireen who? Oh you mean the daughter of the biggest badass in Westeros and the tool that he uses.

  • Silver of Wyman,

Oh don’t get me wrong….I love grumpy guy. I’m patiently waiting for him to get some real respect though (in the show). For now, Shireen is dat luvable greyscale smurfette!

  • This bids fair to be my favourite episode of the season! KL moving into their brave new world, HOLY FUCK SANSA IN THE VALE AND LOVESTRUCK LYSA, I’m liking this weird Bran storyline, and Dany talking about invading Westeros makes me happy.

Even though I’m Sullied, that convo will still be cool to listen to.

  • Props to Kit again. He really is pulling off season 4!
Also, props to Michelle McLaren. I can’t say I’m a fan of The Bear and the Maiden Fair, but Second Sons and Oathkeeper were just really good (and I’m talking specifically about the directing and the flow of the episodes, on top of the actual content).

I hope D&D give her a big one in season 5. I bet she could do justice to the Daznak Pit. And the Sorrows.

  • This has been the hardest week of my life. How can D&D be so evil to injure and cage Hodor? That was never in the books.

    #FreeHodor2014

  • During the Lysa – LF scenes in the preview, I had to do a doubletake when Lysa has her back to the camera, facing LF. She does have a striking resemblance (from the back) to Cat.

  • Hodor’s Bastard:

He should warg into people and make them kill “themselves”. :D

Ok cool. BTW according to IMDB he appears in episode 5.

  • I wonder what did the Hound do to make Arya so angry. Can’t wait to see that already and to discover the repercussions of the changes in Bran’s storyline. Hope it pays off. Oh, and the Eerye… I’m looking forward to that too

  • Also can someone tell me what Lysa says to Sansa? I can only get : “…responsible for you”

  • I’m excited to see what happens with these new plot lines but I really really hope they do not reunite Jon and Bran. Also, I don’t think they have done a good job setting up this Locke undercover at the Wall storyline. Roose made a little comment in episode three about sending Locke to the Wall that many people probably missed or don’t remember. He hasn’t gotten much screen time so I don’t think many casual viewers even recognize him or know he was sent there by Roose Bolton. Honestly, I don’t even really know what Locke is supposed to be doing there. Is he there to kill Jon or find Bran and Rickon?

  • I have a theory regarding Bran & Jon that I haven’t seen mentioned. What if whether by them physically meeting each other ( which I doubt and hope dosn’t happen) or by being in close proximity ( which would make it easier to understand) Bran opens Jon’s third eye?

  • King DBC,

Sigh… Sam in the show didn’t promise Bran anything. Bran didn’t even try to tell him not to tell Jon. So… why are you judging Sam’s actions based on something that didn’t even happen to him in this version?

  • Can we see more Oberyn (with theme music) and see The Mountain this coming Sunday please?

  • Tatters,

Locke is going to be lunchmeat for some hungry direwolf brothers.

    Ghost: Tastes great!
    Summer: Less filling!

  • If Lysa’s showing up already, it’s possible that her big scene will be in episode 7 (“Mockingbird”) rather than the show waiting for Episode 10. Also possible that ep 7 is just another wedding, though.

Quite excited about the Dany plot and the upcoming battle at Craster’s Keep. Looks like this should be a good episode.

    Quite possibly.
    Couple arguments:

They mentioned the shocks being spread out through the season and this certainly qualifies as one.

I have seen casting announcements for lords / ladies of the vale. I just dont see them showing up with Lysa around…

So they are going in AFFC territory?
Which means we’ll definitely get new material for Sansa in S5… This is getting tough.

  • I can’t wait for Jon to take on the “fuuucking legend!” Grenn and Edd should take out Rast. It’s about time for Edd’s droll humor to pop up, maybe as they are getting ready to attack.

  • Tony,

I refuse to believe they would put “Only Cat” in episode 7. The Lords of the Vale can just appear at the wedding. I’m pretty sure Alex Graves appeared in the background of a scene focused around the Moon Door in one of the behind the scenes featurettes. He directed episodes 8 and 10, not 7. “That scene” needs to be in the finale, especially if Lady Stoneheart is the final scene.

  • Tyrion Pimpslap,

Except thatthey permanently dismantled the Eyrie/moon door set. That was featured during the filming, before the start of the airing of season 4.
I take that to mean there will be no more scenes shot there. Only Cat will have to be this season.

  • Lady Mychelle,

Anddddddd my spoiler tags didn’t work and I can’t edit! Grrrrrrrr

  • Jon having his third eye opened in close proximity to and by Bran sounds like a very cool idea. I hope this happens. Also, a lot of people see Ghost being kept alive as a poor plot line, but if he remains alive and escapes his cage, it also shows he is important for later, no? (end of ADwD…). But, having seen Ghost in a cage where Jon might stumble upon him made me wonder if it will affect the scene in aSoS where Jon goes to make his important decision in the Weirwood grove, as Ghost appearing at the right time is what convinces Jon of which choice to make. But it will probably depend on how translatable that scene will be to screen, since we have access to Jon’s thoughts in the book. In any case, Karl seemed pretty possessive of Ghost when Rast suggested they kill him. He probably sees Ghost as some sort of prize he has earned, being the type of person he is.

I’m on the fence about whether Jon and Bran should meet though. Just missing each other would be kind of tragic but the best, or they can meet as warged wolves.

  • Tatters:
    JamesL,

He will probably try and kill Bran. IT really makes sense in the show as Theonspilled that secret.

Killing Bran (and probably Jon too, while he’s there) does seem to be his plan. Also, in the books, Theon didn’t need to spill the secret because murdering fake Bran & Rickon was Ramsay’s idea in the first place.
