Had to laugh at that considering my typos
Don’t worry I do not put hexes on GOO, only on x’s. :D

Anyway, my own goes to Oberyn for not standing up when Tywin entered the Small council.

This episode was so full of memorable moments, it’s a very good sign when we finish after such a long conversation and still have much left to get into. We hope you all are having a blast with this, too!

    Eric,

Re: Shae. It could be that she is in the know about Tywin’s plan to send Tyrion to the Wall. In a way she may be believing she is actually saving his life.
Edit: lol, that’s the problem with commenting while listing, the same point was made but it doesn’t seem to sway Eric.

The reason no one came to Tyrion’s defense is because Tyrion didn’t have any witnesses to help his side. He mentioned this a couple episodes ago to Pod in his cell – no one was willing to testify on his behalf.

Loved the discussion about Shae’s motives – the scene was written/portrayed to show both her “woman scorned” fury AND the obvious “I memorized these lines” tone….under duress? willingly and vengefully? under penalty of death? This is why I love the books – the ambiguity of the characters; there are no blatantly evil or good people. The show has struggled to reflect this and this scene was a step in that direction – at least we are all guessing as to Shae’s motives!

The look on Shae’s face when Tyrion demands a trial by combat would suggest to me that this was not part of the plan. As to which plan she’s in on, I have no idea.

BTW Anti-Own(It is UnOwned? What is the opposite of own?) goes to Yara for not burying her throwing axe in Ramsay’s skull while she had the chance. Of course she whacks the guard on duty. But the bare-chested lunatic who made her branch of the family extinct in the male line? Why would you want to kill him? -_-

I completely agree with your thoughts Eric that Shae shuld not be in Tyrion’s trial. If she’s there, that’s solely her decision. whatever events lead to that decision is something else.

In previous episodes Shae says ‘I’m not scared of your father and now she’s there testifying against Tyrion. Hence, whatever the reason, whoever pulling the strings, it’s Shae’s decision to be there at the trial.

sorry it’s Maester Pycelle not Master. you seem like Gilly… Lol

I don’t agree with Kate on Varys, I think he just has a few cards to play towards the end. When Varys is talking with Oberyn and when Oberyn says ‘how did you get here… to which Varysreplies ‘people I trust’ he’s looking at the stand where Tyrion gets chained to during the trial.

So far, this season is a very positive surprise. The books pretty much stopped being interesting right after the Red Wedding and became a rambling testament to GRRM being a much better short story writer than serial novelist, but the show is carried on strong performances, writing and production values and continues to amaze.

For reminding us that war isn’t all about ships and soldiers. Loved Mark’s performance; really glad he didn’t give him a fruity accent, because it’s keeping with the character of the books.

He only had a week off between Doctor Who & Sherlock to film, but he’ll hopefully get some more time next season, wearing a fantastic purple hat (or I riot!?!?! LOL :).

Re Theon: I suppose Lady Grey, strictly speaking you are correct, but my understanding (I haven’t read all the books yet and Theon is not directly in ASOS) is that he has a part to play further down the line, so if he escaped Ramsay’s clutches at this stage it might mess up his future story-line (I can’t seem to remain completely “unspoiled” no matter how hard I try).

I’m probably the 9,999th person to think about this, but I have wondered if the captain’s daughter Theon “consorted” with on the boat early in Season 2, might perhaps have become pregnant, but I’m probably wrong because that might be a bit of a hackneyed device and GRRM tries to avoid those.

Oh I see, you were pointing out a plot-hole.

I never really got to grips with what the inheritance laws were supposed to be on the Iron Islands. In the real world, in old Normandy before it became part of France, the Duke William (who was known as “William the Bastard”) who became the King of England known as the Conqueror, (William I) was the son of unmarried parents but he still got dukedom and then the throne of England (admittedly the latter was by conquest). (You may know these facts anyhow and I don’t want to annoy anyone by pointing out something they know already). I think under Welsh laws illegitimate children could inherit as well at one time but the English system of law gradually prevailed in Wales.

The Summer’s Ghost of Nymeria, of House Shaggydog, Lady of the Grey Wind,

I thought the whole Dreadfort showdown was an awful disappointment. What happened to Pyke’s “50 best killers?” Why was shirtless Ramsay able to mow through armored warriors? (again, Pyke’s alleged best killers…) And then Yara stands there like a deer in headlights, mere feet away from Ramsay, while he casually unlocks the hounds’ cage. She had two men at her back at that point, and Ramsay had one. It just didn’t make any sense

    Eric,
Shae asked Tyrion to leave King’s Landing with her (after the battle of blackwater) because she thought this wouldn’t end well and Tyrion was not willing to. To condemn Shae for being unwilling to face certain death? that’s a bit rich, I’m sorry.

She had two men at her back at that point, and Ramsay had one. It just didn’t make any sense that she would quit that easily. Especially after her dramatic speech about how being “Iron Born” meant nothing if their Prince could be captured and tortured with impugnity. I get that she ultimately couldn’t rescue Theon for story reasons, but the same result could have been acheived much more convincingly / effectively with a little more thought & time. It was a weak blowoff to a plot line that they teased so effectively at the end of S3.

    Hexonx,

Assuming that Tywin’s end-game all along is to have Jaime/Tyrion plea for mercy and for Tyrion to end up at the wall, while Jaime continues the family line at Casterly Rock, Shae was an unneeded addition to the trial. Her presence only served to unhinge Tyrion and ruin the plan; instead of asking for mercy, Tyrion requests Trial by Combat. Therefore, if Shae is there under duress, it’s a gross miscalculation on Tywin’s (or Cersei’s) part to include her. Tyrion would have been out of the way at the Wall, something both Tywin and Cersei want. But including Shae’s testimony, and breaking Tyrion’s heart, and causing him to request combat, means he may walk away scot-free, depending on how the combat goes. So, if Shae isn’t there of her own doing, to pay back Tyrion, then one of the Lannisters has shot themselves in the foot.

    Posted May 13, 2014 at 10:40 am | Permalink

I think Tyrion was pushed too far with the testimony of Shae. After that Tyrion went scorched earth on everyone. Once his dignity was taken he had nothing left to hold onto except anger. Darth Tyrion?

Tywin definitely had it planned out where Jamie would take his rightful place at Casterly Rock. Jaime Lannister is playing checkers and Tywin is playing chess. However the final scene where he’s glaring at Tyrion is amazing. He hadn’t planned on that. Eric had a great point. I also think Tywin has an idea that it was the Martells, but obviously he can’t take action against them as he so aptly put it to Cersei the Lannisters need them now more than ever.

    Lol @ Stannis the Mannis

    Posted May 13, 2014 at 10:50 am | Permalink

Oh, and did Stannis get the money as a straight up loan, or is this Braavos funding the enemy / hedging their bets against the Lannisters?

And Yara threw a hatchet iinto the forehead of a guard while climbing up a rope, but can’t throw one into Crazy Ramsay who is shirtless and trying to unlock his dogs?

    Eric,

So, if Shae isn’t there of her own doing, to pay back Tyrion, then one of the Lannisters has shot themselves in the foot.

I think you’re absolutely right, it is a huge miscalculation on Tywin’s part. Cersei wanted Tyrion dead but Tywin clearly wanted him sent to the Wall. But we need to remember that Tywin has ALWAYS underestimated Tyrion. Tywin has been surprised several times in the series.

    1) That Tyrion escaped the Vale of his own accord AND showed up with own soldiers (albeit hill people)
    2) Before one of the battles with Robb, he was surprised by Tyrion’s intelligent assessment of the battle plan and the political landscape
    3) by Tyrion’s buying time in the Battle of Blackwater (and thus saving the city), etc, etc

In my recap/review I am going to address this point specifically. I hope to have the video done before midnight tonight.

The Ghost of Nymeria, of House Shaggydog, Lady of the Grey Wind of Summer. Or perhaps Summer Lady of the Grey Wind.

    .

It cannot be denied that Ramsay completely owns Reek, mind, body and soul.

And even if Shae loves Tyrion, she’s under no obligation to die for the sake of not hurting his feelings. He was in all likelihood going to be convicted with or without her testimony. If she was threatened, and told that he’d be sent to the Wall, then it’s a choice between dying to spare his pride/feelings, or (hopefully) getting paid while hurting him the way he hurt her. I sure hope I never have to make that kind of choice, but I think I’d have to go with life, and trust that my loved one would know I was coerced.

Well I guess really the opposite of owning is getting owned. So basically the anti-owns are whoever/whatever got owned.

    i.e.

    Drogon owned that goat.

    or

That goat got owned by Drogon.

Just depends on how you phrase it.
