George R.R. Martin talks killing characters and writing on DOS with Conan O’Brien

conan

George R.R. Martin was a guest on last night’s Conan. In a very funny interview, the “A Song of Ice and Fire” author talks about the bold move of killing King Joffrey, and how the show-runners David and Dan are actually more bloodthirsty than he is. He also comments on President Obama referencing the Iron Throne, and jokes about giving those things away for free.

Martin also admits that unlike other authors who worry about their work falling prey to computer viruses, he doesn’t have to- he uses a DOS computer, not connected to the internet. Spell check isn’t welcome in Westeros!

  • George is funny.

He has money now. George needs to buy a new hat.

  • Has an interview gone by where George doesn’t mention that they killed Irri and Mago *bored alien face*

Also when I saw the title I thought it meant “on writing DOS (Dream of Spring” and I was really excited

  • Blutrabe,

    House Mormont,

I bet he made that title up as a little nod to his machine, as the original title was the slightly “spoilery” A Time for Wolves. I like the idea that he’s one step ahead of any potential ASOI&F fans with the means to hack whole chapters to their systems for reading in advance (not sure if they could do that really).

On the other hand, each time he tells this story it’s a minute lost that he could be working on the books. Seriouslah chat show production people, stop booking this man!

Favourite bit was when Conan said; “Oh look, it’s a cat. KILL IT!” Really nailed the character of Joffrey there ;).

  • Of course he talks about DOS! I should hope so.

Hey, you there! yes you with the high hopes and ridiculous faith in the man’s writing.. nope, that’s not the Dream Of Spring, silly!

  • That explains a lot. His computer is so slow, every time he types it takes words away.

  • jentario,

    (Sarcasm Warning )

I think thats three people who have posted a video in this thread that has been available (through other sources) for around two months. Before trying to be clever it might be useful to read above to check, which shouldn’t be difficult in this case as thee aren’t many comments(Obviously if there was a lot of questions, it would be fine.

Please, no more links to this video We got the point.

  • Don’t know if anyone mentioned this already, but in this article in NME, Lilly Allen claims she was offered the role of Asha/Yara, and describes it as a cameo. Hope this doesn’t mean they view Asha as a cameo role.

  • I’ve got an idea GRRM, you put me in the next book so I can return in all my glory and make sure Lord Snow dies a horrible death and I wont make a skull mug outta you mate.

  • House Mormont,

I know she’s his brother, that’s why it’s funny and hugely uncomfortable if she would have said yes. I just mean it probably means there aren’t any big plans with her story line in the future if the role was described as a cameo.

  • Tessa_Leonie,

no like they didnt ask her or call it a cameo, she’s known for her deadpan humour, if you read it in her voice it makes sense

She is obviously kidding but I wish she wasn’t because Gemma Whelan is pretty terrible as Asha :P

  • Pau Soriano,

I get that most people were expecting her to be hot big nosed pirate lady with two axes and a tight corset, but man can she read a letter. She’s always super commanding with the little screentime she gets

Asha? Yes she is. But she’s perfect as Yara. ;)

And Rakharo and Robb Stark’s wife.

  • He talks,

    He eats,

    He blogs,

He does interviews about the show,

    And he doesn’t write anymore.

D&D&Cogman don’t talk or blog that much about THEIR show.

    They don’t have time.

They have set deadlines to meet.

    They have to work.

    They work.

He moans about butterflies, Irri and Mago.

I bet D&D care more about Irri, Mago and butterflies than him.

It’s nearly 10 years from last Sansa chapter.

D&D make a Sansa episode year after year, until the end of the series.

People worry about being spoiled on Sansa arc in the 5th season.

Stop worrying, shmofos, you won’t get spoiled, you will get delivered Sansa. Each season, year after year.

    They’ll deliver. They’ll do it.

He won’t. Not now. Not ever.

  • Shmofo,

The above post works much better if you imagine a bitchy gay voice saying it.

And since when do the showrunners not do interviews? Anybody who follows this site alone can tell you that’s a bunch of BS.

What I saw was that she was asked to play Asha/Yara… that’s not a cameo!

  • Really no House Of Tirecentre?! I always thought Dany’s family name was Daenerys Tirecentre!

It is also fun to read all the armchair opinions on Martin’s writing or lack off…you know opinions are like assholes, and that whole bit…
