Pictures from Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 7 “Mockingbird”
By Lightbringer on in Media.

Pictures from this Sunday’s new episode of Game of Thrones, “Mockingbird,” have been released. This batch includes a new look at Daenerys Targaryen studying a map, our favorite new odd couple Brienne and Pod, Samwell Tarly, and Sansa Stark enjoying something she hasn’t seen in a while, snow.

Sansa looks all ladylike. And beautiful. Just like the other lady in Meereen.

I really, really, really REALLY like the still of Brienne and Pod. It definitelly looks liek how I imagined her journey in AFFC to loo like. Really rooting for Duskendale and the Quiet Isle. AFFC is my second favourite book and Briene’s journey is my favourite part from it. I would always geek out a little whenever I discovered that the next chapter was a Brienne chapter. She’s such a fascinating character and her journey in AFFC is just so epic. I loved every minute of it so the more we can get of Brienne and Pod on the road, the better imo.

Pod and Brienne in a spooky, foggy forest… is this right before they get captured by the BWB and meet Lady Stoneheart?!? Even with Only Cat this episode, I still thought there was a chance Stoneheart would be the last scene of the finale but that’s starting to seem more and more unlikely…

On second thought, maybe the Brienne/Pod pic is from their trip to Crackclaw Point. I think that whole area is swampy so it would fit the pic and make more sense for where they are in the story…

    Lady Wolfsbane,

You think they’d reduce her entire AFFC story to a couple of episodes in the season that is primarily drawing from ASOS? Not sure about that. I think if we get a LS reveal it will be like in ASOS, with the Freys at the end of the narrative. Seems like the big events are Ep 7 w/ “Only Cat,” Ep 8 is obviously “The Red Viper and The Mountain,” Ep 9 is “Stannis! Stannis!” and Ep 10 is the changed dynamic on the wall, Tyrion’s escape and (hopefully) LS.

There’s no way that LS is in this episode, they’ve barely started their journey, and it’s a finale moment, not episode 7 moment.

And I also don’t see Brienne and Pod getting captured in episode 7 and LS in the finale. What, are they going to spend two and a half episodes in captivity while a shitload of stuff happens in other places, before they even learn who’s holding them?

    Croat,

If that’s the case, then don’t expect her to show up at all in the show. Her reveal is too good not to be used as a finale cliffhanger, as it was at the end of ASOS. The only fitting end point for Brienne and Pod this season is for them to run into the Brotherhood and LS. And anyone who has listened to D&D talk about mapping out each season, knows that they want each character/storyline to have a definitive beginning, middle, and end. Brienne and Pod still wandering around looking for Sansa is not an end.

That’s one precious detail I was positive D&D would choose to leave out, but I’m so happy they decided to keep it. It’s crucial for Sansa!

And it will be lovely to see Winterfell again even if it is made of snow…

The Brienne/Pod scene may be an entirely new one.

It might be showing Brienne’s encounter with Locke’s crew of henchmen, as a standin for the Bloody Mummers – but I don’t recall any of them except Locke having a memorable role. So Brienne meeting up with them again wouldn’t be all that dramatic.

Those who are expecting that Brienne and Pod will meet up with Lady Stoneheart – I am guessing that the reveal will be saved for Season 5.

Otherwise Gwendoline Christie would have to sit out the entire season, pretty much.

Plus, as of ADWD, even book readers have no idea where the storyline is going with Brienne, Pod, and Jaime. It would be difficult for the show creators to move the story past the point where they meet up again without knowing what the ultimate outcome will be.

The showrunners would have to stretch out the storylines a bit.

This might sound crazy, but…aren’t Pod and Brienne heading North to the Wall? Or am I remembering that completely wrong? Are they headed to the Eyrie instead?

Damn, Emilia and Sophie look beautiful in those pictures. They always do, of course, but those shots are particularly stunning.

While the promos have confirmed that Only Cat will be in this episode, I’m positive that Lady Stoneheart is still being saved for the last scene of the finale. I know that people love the thematic resonance that comes from the juxtaposition of those two scenes on the page. I do as well, which is why I long expected that Only Cat would be the second-to-last scene of the finale. Now we know that isn’t the case, but I still believe that Lady Stoneheart won’t be moved up to this episode. It’s just too shocking and powerful of a reveal not to use it as a season-ending cliffhanger.

If I had to guess based on Brienne and Pod’s expressions I’d say they’re surveying some kind of roadside carnage probably done by the Mountain and his men. It would serve as an intoduction to the new Mountain and reinforce how brutal he is. Maybe it’s smoke and not fog so a burning Inn? Or perhaps they run into Rorge and Biter as another poster suggested.

I originally thought that Only Cat would be in episode 7 or 8, not in the finale, because Lysa’s death would get overshadowed by everything else, especially Tywin’s death, if it was in the finale, but other people managed to change my mind. It turns out my original hunch was really good…

No such thing is the case with Lady Stonheart. That is definitely finale material, and last shot of the finale material, in fact, more than anything else so far except for Dany’s dragons. It tops even the big deaths in what a twist and how shocking it is, and it also makes sense thematically as the end of the season that shows the aftermath of the RW.

    Joh,

I don’t think the fact that we’ll be caught up to the books means it’ll be next season. In fact, I guarantee it’ll be the last frame of this season. We’re also completely caught up with Bran by the end of this season and it looks like we’ll be just about caught up with Reek and coming close with Dany and some others. There just isn’t enough material left for a lot of characters for the entirety of season 5, so I’m pretty sure that D&D stealing the show and moving into uncharted territory begins next season rather than S6. It makes sense

Plus, I would imagine that Brienne won’t be in the first few episodes of S5 as they’ll want to leave some time to let everyone think she’s dead before they reveal that she’s alive if they stick to the way it was done in the books and make viewers think she’s dead.

  74. Shan

    Matt Sinopoli,

I think that only cat would have been a finale moment if Lysa hadnt already revealed Littlefingers orders/master plan. I think that in combination with the flight would have made it a finale moment, but viewers honestly just don’t know or care about Lysa enough for that itself to be a huge moment

I just want to know who’s ear Brienne is going to bite off. Gwendoline was quite excited about it in a pre-season interview, but obviously it won’t be Locke, which would have made the most sense. Hmmmm…….any ideas?

I tried to spoiler block that, but clearly did it wrong. Mods, help?

    Much thanks.

We know that Gwen and Daniel filmed some S4 scenes in Iceland, so it seems they will have a few incidents on the road before they meet up with LS. If they needed the different scenery in Iceland, that sounds like an adaptation of the Cracklaw Pt / Quiet Isle material.

And anyway, all the LS action is located in the Riverlands, and that is shot in N Ireland. If the big LS reveal is in episode 9 or 10, then that leaves Brienne and Pod on the road in S4, and then they can get captured early in S5.

This is kind of off topic but remember before the season started when David or Dan said in an EW interview that the show spends about 70mins in Tyrion’s cell this season. I guess that was bullshit because so far it has probably been less than 15mins. I’m glad that turned out as bullshit though because 70mins seemed really excessive.

I’d be surprised if they cut LS since Sansa told Tyrion in 401 about Catelyn having her throat cut and thrown into the river. Definetly a last scene of the season material. If not, what else?

    UnbowdUnbentedUnhodor,

Dany gets about 2mins of screen time an episode yet book nerds always have to bitch about her. If it wasn’t for her the show wouldn’t be nearly as popular, “Khaleesi” is still the fan favorite among casual viewers. If anything she should be getting more screen time than she has so far.

I think maybe Brienne and Pod will be captured either this episode not to be seen until the finale or they will be captured next episode.

The quiet isle can be put in next season if they do it at all. Either Brienne can detour there while seeking Jaime. I think they’ll cut Crackclaw point but Duskendale might stay so we can be introduced to Randyl Tarly.

Last year, I would have thought that all of season 5 would be devoted to AFFC and ADWD but it looks like we’re getting a decent amount of TWOW next year. Hopefully the book will be out by then.

Would they show LS without showing her fished out of the river by Nymeria or her transformation? That’s missing the heart of the story! There’s plenty of time for rape and abuse. and no genuine moments of love and sacrifice?

Wow…I never associated the LS story with the words “love and sacrifice” but that is definitely an interesting way to put it. I can see Beric’s “sacrifice” but I can only assume the “love” is related to Nymeria…maybe? I think Cat was dead too long before her resurrection to have anything but darkness and rage/contempt within her undead self. I do hope in TWoW that LS gets to meet either Arya or Sansa…only at that point will we see if there is any human love/compassion left in her.

I don’t know if they will include LS in the show but I do know that if they do there will be a signification negative reaction to it. This is just one of the elements of the story that I know people will find cheap or cheesy. I knew before the shadow birth that lots of viewers were going to hate that and sure enough people thought it was ridiculous and a”jumping the shark” moment. LS will get a similar reaction. No matter what I think a lot of people wouldn’t like it but it would have worked better in the season finale last season. Now It has been too long and people have moved on. All it will do is cheapen the whole Red Wedding scene, people will never look at that scene the same if she returns.

as a book reader, i too get excited about seeing certain events occur on screen. it’s only natural when you feel passionate about the source material. but some of the excitement and predictions are so (the only word i can think of is) manically excited, and people are so in love with their predictions that they are sure to be disappointed when it doesn’t happen the way they convinced themselves it should. and i can understand why you are disappointed when i think about in the context of that uberzeal.

i did experience this last year when i started rereading the books to keep up with the show. i found myself doing the same type of predicting, and then following it up with the same thing i hate about book-purism, i found myself nitpicking, and losing enjoyment of the book and the show. and i realized, as strange as it sounds, i didn’t want to care as much about what i wanted to see. i just wanted to let the show happen with no expectation. my gawd it was so much better. some day i will get back to the books and read them again and love them just as much as i did the first time.

one last point, some of the predictions based on the book seem so left-field and out of context in comparison to the tv show. it’s almost like predicting godzilla to show up in cinderella (how forkin awesome would that be?). i feel like any prediction has to live in and remain internally consistent with the world of the show and not the books, they are two different places, otherwise, again, you are bound to be disappointed.

Book readers are really excited about seeing LS on the show and think the average viewer is going to love this shocking plot twist but I’m just pointing out that there will be a significant negative reaction to it if they include her, especially now since they have waited so long and people have moved on.

    JamesL,

It would have even cheaper to show the resurrection one episode after the Red Wedding, and would have undercut the effect of the RW even more. Not to mention that we’d be waiting much longer for Stoneheart to actually do something, so people would be pretty disappointed going forward after that cliffhanger. It’s better off this way if they have to include it (I wish they would just cut it personally). Many people are absolutely not going to like it though. I’m expecting a worse reaction than the shadowbaby.

I bet they will save LS for Season 5. They most likely will introduce her with Brienne’s capture by the BWB rather than with the Frey hanging — that’s a much better introduction, viewers will be as shocked as Brienne will be. But if they do it in Season 4, Brienne’s and Jaime’s story will be deep into TWOW already in Season 5. Why rush when there’s so much original material to use? It’s a great opportunity for some exposition/backstory also.

(Actually I’m just saying that because Quiet Isle is one of my favorite places in Westeros and I’ll be really upset if they cut it out :()

But why would they do that? Change the order of things just so we could have LS by the end of this season? It’s not like they needed a big finale moment for this year, as there are already so many (Tywin’s death, Tyrion’s escape, battle at the Wall). I don’t know, it just makes more sense in my head to have LS in season 5, but we’ll see.

I’m pretty sure the book won’t be out before season 5. I’m hoping for before season 6, and I think that’s pretty optimistic from my part…

    JamesL,

Are you listening to yourself? Resurrecting Cat the episode after the Red Wedding would cheapen it, not revealing it a whole season later. That said, they definitely could have set things up better by having the Nymeria scene and some mentions of Lady Stoneheart in the Riverlands (though we may still get that with Brienne.

I just hope they manage to set it up well before the finale, or else it would definitely be awkward and misplaced.

  114. jentario
    Posted May 16, 2014 at 3:39 am | Permalink

    Winter Rose,

It makes sense because showing Stoneheart two seasons after Cat’s death would be weird as hell, and because the book revealed it at the end of ASOS. It would be a great final moment for the season and there’s no reason to delay it. By sending Brienne early on her journey this season they fix one of the annoying things in AFFC: waiting for Stoneheart. This season, Brienne meets her (and I think she’ll witness a Frey hanging too, just to understand the character better) and next season instead of waiting for the finale, Stoneheart begins the season- Brienne’s trial and hanging would bookend the season 5 premiere. It gives much needed spice to the beginning of the season and removes the choking hold it would have had on the end of the season (which is packed with other storylines that need to be treated). Also, it means we get less of Brienne’s journey in season 5 and more of Dorne and the Iron Islands while a bunch of Brienne’s material comes in season 4. That’s not to say that everything gets cut: Quiet Isle and Duskendale (if they are important to the endgame) can make it into season 5 while Brienne goes to fetch Jamie. If you ask me, it makes a lot of sense.

    Winter Rose,

I must I originally saw no clue or reason in ending the season with Brienne meeting LS, but now I’m actually quite convinced that will and should be the case. Why else would she go on this journey so early this season? Why would they stretch her journey to one and a half season of accomplishing nothing? Even though it’s a big change, the more I think about it, there are actually quite a few good reasons to do it like this:

    1. LS will be revealed to an important character rather than an unimportant Frey dude
    2. The “trial” and “hanging” of Brienne can be in an early ep next season, which means that we can keep LS and the BWB around instead of not following up on the reveal for almost an entire season
    3. Brienne’s quest can, after that, still take place, but not for Sansa -> for Jaime instead. In which she can actually succeed.
    4. Her story can be compressed to a few crucial scenes, making more room to other storylines (Duskendale, Quiet Isle, meeting Gendry, finding Jaime)
    4. They could have Thoros accompany them (to make sure she keeps her word), therefore not needing to introduce Hyle Hunt and/or Nimble Dick.
    5. No need for WoW material yet, rather Brienne’s journey takes place in reverse order, ending with the last Jaime chapter.

It’s either that or cut it out entirely. As of now the Hound is alive and well. The show changed up the order before with the introductions of Ramsay and the Reeds. Why not do it again? It wouldn’t harm the overall story arc. Brienne will need something to do until meeting Jaime at the Blackwood’s.

Seeing as only Cat looks to be in this episode, I’m now seeing the final two scenes of the season as being Tywin on the can and the LS reveal. It could work, going from Tyrion killing one of the people responsible for the Red Wedding to Walder Frey, the other person responsible, sending Lame Lothar out to ransom another Frey, and then it plays out like the ASOS epilogue.

The more I think about it, the more I like this scenario.

This makes no sense to me. There have only been 3 seasons. Just because 2 of them ended with a Dany scene does not make this a pattern. Now if season 4 ends with a WW scene THEN you can make a claim that it’s a pattern. Thing is, it will most likely end with the scene most people are predicting it will end with, which is the same way ASOS ended. However, I too think it will be adapted to include Brienne and Pod
