Roger Ashton-Griffiths on shooting Game of Thrones Season 4, confirms Mace Tyrell’s return for Season 5
By Lightbringer on in Interview.

Flicks And The City caught up with Roger Ashton-Griffiths at Collectormania 21 in Milton Keynes this week. Roger is a newcomer to Game of Thrones in Season 4 with his portrayal of the loveable Lord, Mace Tyrell, and admittedly did not have a lot of time to prepare for the role. He talks about shooting the Purple Wedding, jumping into his first scene ever, Tyrion’s trial, and working with some of Thrones’ remarkable actors. He also reveals that he just received the news that Mace Tyrell will be back for Season 5.

Talking points:

  • Shooting the Purple Wedding
  • Watching Joffrey die multiple times
  • Shooting his first scene, Tyrion’s trial
  • Working with remarkable actors
  • The possibility of a Thrones movie
  • Mace Tyrell confirmed for Season 5
  • What he’d like to do in Season 5

Does anyone else think they’ll skip ahead and make Mace Hand of the King immediately after Tywin’s death?

    A Secret Baratheon,

That’s what I thought, too. Mace seems like an even bigger doofus in the show than in the books. So he can fill Harys Swift’s role as the biggest idiot on Cersei’s small council perfectly.

I wonder which scene he was going to talk about before stopping because it was a spoiler (assuming it’s not something that was already shown until “The Laws of Gods and Men” and he was just a little confused).

It would remove the need to cast several new characters who appear in the books, but wouldn’t add much to the TV show. I would be interested to see if Kevan Lannister reappears before the end of S4 as he is an important figure in the story beyond the point were the TV show is currently at.

He may have been about to say the trial by combat.

But Kevan becomes Tommen’s regent when Cersei is in “jail”. He’s never Hand IIRC. Cersei asking him and him saying no aside.

I can just see it before me: Margaery with a little stag-crown on the throne on her left side Loras in his Kingsguard whites and on the right Mace with the Hand’s pin on his coat looking smug. Talk about replacements.

Or just that Olenna departs KL.

He wants Mace to sing with a lute in his hands? Who does he think he is? Rhaegar? Mance? Oh wait, don’t answer that.

Because actors that are about to be killed off have never lied before about returning.

Mace Tyrell is such a useless character… should be cut of the series.

So…if Kevin doesn’t return after Tywin’s death, what possible scenarios are there?

    A) Mace assumes King Regent and gets killed by Varys?
    B) Loras assumes King Regent and gets killed by Varys?
    C) Jaime assumes King Regent and everything becomes silly?
    D) Cersei maintains her Queen Regent status and Varys kills Tommen/Mace?
    E) King Tommen rules but is killed by Varys?

I noticed that the actor shuts himself up after he mentions a wedding. Most probably he meant Margaery and Tommen’s, but perhaps there’s a possibility that he was referring to Loras and Cersei’s.

Varys kills Pycelle in that scene too, so maybe he become regent/hand and gets killed? It would be slightly more economical that way.

    Matt Sinopoli,

Perhaps…I always thought that once Qyburn appeared in KL, Pycelle was very expendable. He could go at any time between now and the end of S5.

Qyburn probably stole Pycelle’s poisons and potions as well.

His first scene was Tyrion’s trial?!

Hell of a way to start his gig! I’d love to see more of him in the show. So far, the show has captured that buffoonish aspect of his character.

I’m looking forward to him punctuating all his statements with “That’s what I would’ve done”. He needs something to do though, and so does Loras.

Well, there was already one with Charles Dance doing this. Making some on westeros.org flip before being reminded of Tywin’s vigil/funeral that will be in season 5.

Because actors that are about to be killed off have never lied before about returning.

    Indeed.

I’m quietly confident that Kevan will return for Tywin’s funeral. It’ll be easy to say he’s been in the field/at Casterly Rock, and he’s far too important to cut out, even if they have to recast him.

I am 99% sure Ser Kevan will return to KL for Tywin’s funeral. they will probably make him hand initially with mace, pycelle and qyburn making up cersei’s small council (+maybe jaime before he leaves). then once cersei is arrested Kevan promotes himself to regent and appoints mace the new hand. Then he and pycelle are murdered by varys in either the s5 finale or early in season 6. plus i’m pretty sure Loras will join king’s guard to ‘protect margaery’ but mostly to avoid marrying cersei. also i could see taena merryweather and a kettleblack (merge all three) being cast next season to add to the KL plot.

Ashton-Griffiths is a very good actor, but , alas this season his speaking time is been, I think, edited out, for time’s sake, I am sure, still.

    Ser Davos Seaworth,

Meryn Trant can fill in for all the Kettleblacks, and I suspect he will.
