Yesterday, Pedro Pascal participated in a live Q&A with HBO Connect. Pedro answered a number of fan questions about his portrayal of Oberyn Martell this season on Game of Thrones.

In some of the best question and answers below he says that his favorite part of playing Oberyn has been his unpredictability, admits that he can be caught walking around his apartment in his Dornish robe, and reveals just how Oberyn prepares to fight The Mountain.

GameOfThrones: Thank you for joining us today Pedro! What’s your favorite part about playing Oberyn Martell?

It’s the best character I’ve ever played and I’m no spring chicken. That’s a testament to how great of a character Oberyn it is. It starts with the brilliant character GRRM created in the books and David Benioff and Dan Weiss in their adaptation to make him a supreme badass on so many levels. Of all of his strengths, I find his unpredictability the most exciting. He has a short fuse and can go off in any moment, but can surprise you by writing poetry and aligning himself with the underdog.

ChelseaFC_Talk: What do you think of the clothes you wear on the show, and will you ever wear them in public?

Oberyn’s outfits are the greatest I put on. My first “pinch me” moment was when I went for a fitting. When I met Michelle Clapton, the costume designer, she put a mock robe on me fitted to my measurements and it was like putting the skin of the character onto my body. I took my mock robe home and I walk around my apartment with it on sometimes.

Ammar Abbas: Which Game of Thrones character (Other than Oberyn) do you think has a similar personality to you?

I would say Daario Naharis is a real lover and a fighter. He has an appetite for extremes like Oberyn Martell. He has an eye on one lady, but he’s similar to Oberyn Martell in ways that he partakes in other pleasures. I’m not sure if Daenerys would partake. And then there’s Tyrion, they would have been pals.

IAmZamann: How does Oberyn prepare to fight someone as large as the mountain?

I think just a lifetime of cleanly shaped hatred and some wine.

  • That’s awesome!

He took the robe home and walked around his apartment with it on… Probably saying his lines and getting his body language movements down.

That’s so cool how actors get into character.

What a fun profession it must be, to play characters like Oberyn.

  • Sheriff Bullock,
    Stop making me laugh, Seth!

Tyrion, Daario and Oberyn would ALL partake… OMG I need to get that image out of my head! It’s too much for my poor heart.

  • GeekFurious,

And I love you GeekFurious. The feelings are more normal than you might think. Heterosexual men can love other sexually ambidextrous men without shame. Don’t give up.

  • Hyped!

Last year everyone was moaning about Pedro having not enough experience to portray this character. Well, look how things have turned out! The viper is already a fan favourite and portrayed by an incredible actor.

I like when people say “everyone” when they mean “virtually no one, except a few angry people on the Internet who whine about everything all the fuckin’ time”. If you go back to what I, and many others, said, it was “In casting we trust” or something like that.

Exactly! I wish everyone would stop saying “everyone.”

Invest in Nina. She is Gold.

  • There’s a spoiler in this post, also don’t read this if you haven’t watched EP. 8. “And then there’s Tyrion, they would have been pals”, would have been? Oh.
