This could be the episode that wins Jon Snow over with casual fans and makes him the “hero” of the show. I think the next two episodes will actually do wonders for getting fans having hope for the series again.

Jon Snow & Stannis Baratheon win a huge battle. Tywin Lannister is killed. And Lady Stoneheart makes her debut.

In the books I always saw these scenes as a shift from horrible things happening to good people to the “good guys” finally making a run at it.

I really hope that they can sell the fact that Mance’s army is 100,000 strong. As good as the Blackwater episode was, there seemed to only be about 100 men there.

Honestly I don’t know how Ygritte can die without the episode ending shortly after, which doesn’t bode well for those of us hoping for Jon to treat with Mance

It just seems to me like the placement of her death in this episode was really a poor choice by the writing team, because seeing Ygritte die is probably going to shock some viewers, who will then need to process her death without being bombarded by other important events to pay attention to

Not to mention that it might really seem rushed and clumsy to have Ygritte die, and then Jon just leaves her to treat with the enemy

The most likely scenario IMO is Ygritte dies near the end, and as Jon is mourning her and the battle seems lost for the Night’s Watch, we hear/see Stannis’ arrival

Another option is, the episode ends on a cliffhanger with Ygritte’s death and the NW in dire straits (it is after all only 51 minutes long, and taking into account opening and closing credits, that leaves like 48 minutes of actual show), and then in the beginning of episode 10 Jon treats with Mance and we get “Stannis, Stannis, Stannis !!”

  27. jentario

    Mark Hogan,

I think Ygritte’s death happens in the last ten minutes, then Slynt/Thorne (if he’s alive at that point) see him mourning her and send him to treat with Mance for being an Oathbreaker. At this point the episode becomes really depressing. Ygritte’s dead, Jon is heartbroken, he rides out through the fields beyond the wall and treats with Mance. Mance says he won’t give up- everything seems lost, and then at the very last moment… STANNIS! STANNIS! STANNIS!!!

After they showed her keep the baby safe in the last episode I figured that would be the path they were going to take.

    jentario,

Well, if it was “Poe”-etic justice….we would have Ygritte slay Ghost. Then he comes back as a wight direwolf and chases Ygritte down into the Castle Black cellars, where she locks herself in one of the dark cells with the other rotting corpses, upon which a 3-eyed raven is feasting….And she screams endlessly as she tries to claw her way out of her locked cell….unheard.

You may very well be right. There is a very brief shot in the trailer named “Vengeance” of Jon riding through the tunnel beneath the Wall looking quite sullen.

That could be a post-Ygritte’s death depressed Jon riding to see Mance

Let’s just hope it’s done in such a way that both the viewers and Jon will be able to absorb some of the shock of her death before the big Stannis moment.

What these pictures show is that Jon is fighting both on the ground at Castle Black(vs the wildlings South of the Wall) and he is leading the defense on top of the Wall(vs the wildlings North of the Wall). I am very happy about this. Now, if they could include him being sent to kill Mance, everything will be perfect.

I haven’t been this excited about an episode in a long, long time. The Battle for Castle Black was my favorite part of the book.

I’ve been all WTF? about the way they have NOT set up The Battle. The suspense leading up to the attack, Jon’s evolution as a real, bona fide, intelligent leader, the savvy preparations and clever defenses… none of this has been covered, and I was getting nervous that much of its impact would be lost. Hopefully they do devote the entire episode to it. Frankly, I’d rather see the next 1 1/2 episodes devoted to it, and the last 1/2 hr. go to Tyrion and LS. I think it would be great storytelling suspense to leave Stannis’ arrival for the last episode.

The picture of Sam and Jon looks to be in early morning light, so it would seem to come after the initial attack and death of Ygritte. It could be a touching moment between the two because Jon is sent to assassinate Mance.

There are a lot of characters and things to get through but I still imagine that there will be enough time, there will be less talking mid-battle than in Blackwater. Action scenes move pretty fast, everyone was saying they wanted like 15 minutes for the duel last episode, we got about 3 and it was still amazing. I think they can do the episode justice in this time, though id love to have more.

We still need loads of time for what will go down in the final episode

    - Tormund and co attack CB. Fight there.
    - Victory of the Watch in the early morning. Ygritte last words.

Olly shoots Ygritte a good portion into the battle. After that most will be kept straight from the source material, including a final you know nothing, Jon Snow. Mance will be seen in the daybreak. Stannis will not arrive until the sun rises and the early morning, it is the reason for the foreshadowing line you see in the promo trailer from Thorne about when the sun rises. A duel between Tormund and Throne will take place that took multiple days to practice and film. The episode will conclude with a very important and subtle foreshadowing hint about the conclusion of the entire story. It’s clever. Pay close attention.

Maybe it has to do with TD being an anthology series, with different characters each season? Each season stands on it’s own. So releasing it a month before the new season to attract new viewers may not work as well.

I’m with another poster upthread in not really being all that excited for this episode. ASOIaF, to me, is far less about actual battles and much more about the world itself, its history, lore, characters’ interaction and political intrigue. Blackwater was necessary as a stand-alone but I’m not seeing why this needs to be the major event it’s being shot as.

There are really only a few major beats to this storyline: Ygritte’s death and Stannis’ arrival to save the day. That and Jon Snow’s real leadership abilities being revealed. I think they could have done that in 35-40 minutes, interspersed with other material. I would much rather have had the conclusion of Tywin and Tyrion Lannisters’ King’s Landing stories this week, then leave more time in the finale for the events leading up to the chaining of the dragons, the death of Balon Greyjoy, Bran and the CoTF, a windup of Sansa’s arc (if that hadn’t been accomplished last week), more of Brienne and triPod’s excellent adventures in ear biting, and finally the L.S. reveal to end it all—assuming L.S. is even going to appear.

Doing it this way makes next week become far too rushed for my tastes, even though it is an hour and 10 minutes or so.

I was one of those not very impressed by the action sequences in Blackwater, so I’m not expecting this episode to blow me away. Where I have MASSIVE expectation is… the Jon and Ygritte scene.

This has been a great season but the only problem for me has been lack of enough time for a lot of the story lines, having said that is an entire episode necessary for the battle at the wall?
How can episode 10 wrap up all the other different stories?

I guess I’m not the only one that’s not really excited about the wall.

I really am looking forward to how D&D wrap up the other storylines.

This Wall stuff, for me, has always just been an afterthought.

Nothing against Jon Snow or Kit, just the TV version of his whole storyline IMO seems very lackluster and shoehorned…

That being said it’ll still be fun to see what Mr. Marshal will have in store for us…

I’m with you that I don’t really care for battles that much, and I went into the Blackwater episode thinking that way too (that it would be fun and epic, but that’s not why I watch GoT and I don’t care about scenes of fighting). However, D&D turned Blackwater into one of my all time favorite episodes. With all of the events that happen at the Wall before and during the battle, and the scope of tension they can build in the episode, makes me think it will be surprisingly much more ‘personal’ on a character level than we might be expecting. Plus the Wall plot is due for some sort of climax, and due to the 3-4 year build up of all these story-lines there also now including Stannis&co. will make for a very engaging episode. I think we’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I too agree. The Wall? Who gives a dusty fuck?! And that of course is exaggerating… It should be who gives a dusty fuck COMPARED to Kingslanding? I loved The Wall / Jon storyline in the book but it simply doesnt work as well in the show as it does in the book. I hope this episode might change it around a bit i have always cared more for storylines set furhter south… I think a lot of unsullied will be realy annoyed. ‘no tyrion resolvement… we get 55 minutes of Wall action’.

I know tons of fans readers and non readers, I myself have read all 5 books, and don’t know a single person who doesn’t like Jon. Pretty sure he’s a fan favorite among casual and aggressive fans

I know many that love Jon Snow readers/book readers. I often hear from people on this website that he is boring which is fine. Everyone has a particular person and storyline they like which is what makes this series great.
Personally, I’m a huge Jon Snow which is why I’m looking forward for this episode. There’s other reasons I’m excited for this episode which I will not say but yes Jon Snow is popular just not with few.

    Tony,

Funny. That’s almost a metaphor for the show. “Who cares about the Wall compared to King’s Landing?” is a major point in the stories. No one but the Night’s Watch really gives a fig about the Wall, and certainly doesn’t care about white walkers and giants (nor believes in them). But the truth is: while all this complicated political intrigue is happening in the south, the most real common and potentially existential threat is to the north. Whether the showrunners have made that interesting is debatable. Personally, I think they (and GRRM) should have spent a little more time showing us the buildup of the White Walker assault.

Except there’s a huge difference between the importance of the battle of Blackwater Bay versus the battle for The Wall–in the short term, at least. Blackwater ends the story if Stannis wins; Cersei, Tyrion, Sandor, and Joffrey’s heads would line the walls, Stannis would settle in and probably govern justly, albeit harshly, and the realm quiets down a little. The Wall is different at this juncture. The wildlings want to move south, the Night’s Watch wants to prevent it; and as we see later, the Free Folk had the right of it. So in reality, and as we’ll see in about 10 months from now on TV, it’s a battle that should never have happened in the first place, and whose outcome is generally irrelevant.

Let’s say Stannis doesn’t arrive in time. The N.W. all die, and the wall is abandoned. Magic keeps the Others out if the gate and the Night Fort’s passageways get sealed up. Long-term the implications might be far different, but short-term, the battle has little bearing on the future of Westeros in the coming few years.

However I cannot wait for ep 9. I’m surprised by how many people are saying that they don’t like battle sequences. How can you not love a good battle scene!? (I grew up on LoTR).

My favourite thing about GoT is the drama – the characters and the plot but come on – this battle has giants, mammoths, men defending a 700 foot tall wall made of ice, a wildling army of 100,00 and the arrival of team dragonstone!

But when spoiler tags are turned off the words are all close enough together on the page that I saw all of them at the same time. It’s not like I saw “massive spoiler” and decided to keep reading; by the time I got to the end of the word “spoiler” I had already seen what came after it.

Since we don’t have multiple types of spoiler tags, I really wish people would not post Sullied spoilers (e.g. spoilers for other shows or things that are going to happen in the show but haven’t been in the preview that everyone’s seen) since tags are generally accepted to be for book spoilers and as a consequence a lot of Sullied have the spoiler tags turned off and are reading through comments very quickly.

I know there is no way to demand or enforce this, I just wish people would be a bit more considerate. A link to the French preview for anyone who wanted to watch it would be a better idea I think.

I think right now it can go either way. He could die and provide some drama Or as some people have speculated, he might become our Bowen Marsh. Think about if, if he indeed takes a hit and survives he has exactly the same backstory as that character and he can take his place. Would be a very good development imo, but they’ll mess it up so he’ll probably die

    Tatters,

Well i am sure there are plenty of sane men amongs wildlings and than there are plenty of women and children…all running away from Whitewalkers. Even John and Stannis will recognize this issue and will deal with it in way, that make their characters very sympatethic.

And dialogues and characters were never as good in Nightwatch storyline as they were in KL. I can see there will be some boring “heroic” speeches, which usually do not impress me much. I expect they will manage to do well battle and deaths scenes, sure, but that not necessary make the episode enjoyable, if the character you like a lot die and the side you are rooting for lose.

I believe Jon is right, Mance’s army is 100,000 strong BUT what they aren’t saying is that the lynch pin of Mance’s strategy has to be attacking the tunnel. And for that, you can only use so many people and giants….To put 100,000 right up to the wall would be incredibly stupid and they’d all be sitting ducks. So yes, there are 100,000 but Mance won’t be able to use all of them to good effect so long as they are on the north side of the wall.
