I hope we see Jon meeting up with Mance in some capacity. The discussion of the episode being non-stop action after the first 15 minutes seems to dissuade that idea, but the “Previously on” video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmQuzhNlyl4) features quite a bit of Mance, and reminds the viewers of Jon’s tension with Janos Slynt. Maybe setting it up for Slynt to send Jon out to treat with Mance?

I really hope that Stannis gets some fight time rather than it just being a case of him only appearing in the last shots of the episode. It would feel too similar to Blackwater for my liking and this is the only chance we have of seeing Stannis in action for quite a while. I would love to see him lock horns with Styr along with Melisandre taking out the Warg. Really hope Im not disappointed by the show giving us 30 seconds of team Stannis. Other than that worry I cant wait for this episode. I love a good on screen battle.

I would like to see him lock horns with Styr or someone of that standing as well as Mel taking out the Warg. I can imagine feeling pretty deflated if team Stannis only get 30 seconds of screen time at the end of the episode. Its one of my favourite moments in the books and as a big Stannis fan it is the moment of this season I have been looking forward to the most. Other than this concern I cant wait for the episode. In the books there is not. For the show to work for all 7 seasons they need to have a “hero”. Maybe not in the conventional way, but there still needs to be somebody to cheer for. So far the fans have thought it was Ned Stark and then Robb Stark. Both were killed. Jon Snow is the next one to take up that spot.

One prediction for tonight’s episode (sorry if it’s too obvious):

The slow-motion shot (first for the show) will be Ygritte being hit by the fatal arrow. The arrow will be shot by the kid from the village. Jon will see it happen, but won’t react until the kid is gone.

No not so much go off book, just I would like to see Stannis getting in on the fight even if only for a few minutes rather than a bunch of guys charging in and him only appearing in the last shot of the episode ala Tywin at Blackwater. I guess its just a personal thing wanting to see him kick some ass with him being a favourite of mine but yeah your probably right in that Im setting up for disappointment by expecting to see a fair bit of Stannis in the episode.

Yeah, I know, I just don’t consider him a hero. Imo Alliser Thorne will be the hero of the battle but I know nobody shares my opinion lol. But yes, a lot of people will see Jon as the hero after this episode.

    Lord Of The Waters,

I’d say, going by how they went with Stannis at the front of his attack in Blackwater, he’ll get some action. Of all the other Kings, he’s the one that gives the Lannisters sleepless nights remember, he’s a proven warrior, etc. They’ll have him leading from the front again, to show that. I don’t know how much of Stannis’ attack we will get, but I’d say we’d have to get enough to know that the Watch/Stannis have won, so the outcome is generally known. And I don’t see how they’d have a similar ending to Blackwater, with Tywin etc. bursting into the throne room and declaring “we won!”. I hope/think that we’ll see the Southron attack in decent detail… And the chant of “Stannis! Stannis! Stannis!”

That’s pretty much exactly what Im hoping for too! Putting him on the front line at Blackwater is my favourite change from the books that the show has ever done. I just want to see him take down some wildlings on his entrance rather than just walk out of a crowd at the end of the episode.

Ah, ’tis a beautiful dream, but they said it would happen in Episode 9. lol

    Lord of the Waters,

Agreed. I’m not one to worry about Stannis’ depiction too much but a small part of me wants the unsullied to understand why there are so many book-readers who root for Stannis. This is a major turning point for his character. Be interesting to see how the unsullied viewers react.

Here’s what I never understood about the Battle at the Wall: Stannis commands some ~5,000 men. The Wildlings have an army of 100,000.

Even if the Baratheon cavalry totally cracks the Wildlings line, there’s just way too many armed fighters for Stannis et al to prevail. It is illogical that a force 1/20 the size can decimate an army so much that the Free Folk simply can’t regroup and immediately counter the basically pitiful force pitted against it.

I honestly don’t see someone like Tormund leading a retreat of tens and tens and tens of thousands of soldiers when they’re up against barely a few thousand. He would regroup perhaps briefly before immediately engaging the force again.

The wildlings south of the Wall have gone on a rampage, slaughtering men, women and children without mercy. You don’t get to “just being a wildling” your way out of that one. That’s a change the writers on the show made to the wildlings and Ygritte as shown in the books. It fundamentally changes the character, how she is portrayed, and how her death will be treated by the VAST majority of viewers.

She’s not a spear-wife killing soldiers – she’s murdering civilians. Men, women, and children. She deserves to burn for it. I expect she will end up on the pointy end of that kid’s arrow – the one who watched her murder his family OUT OF NOWHERE. This Ygritte is in NO WAY distinguishable from The Mountain’s Men or Ser Amory Lorch’s THUGS. “Dunsen, Polliver, Raff the Sweetling, The Tickler, Ser Gregor, Ser Amory, Ygritte, …” She is good company with the scum on that list. If Arya was in the NORTH at the Gift, Season 4′s Ygritte would no doubt be on it.

If you are unable to see the distinction, there is nothing more I or anyone else can say to assist you in overcoming your willful blindness. Ygritte in Season 4 took a left turn at Albuquerque. She is NOT Ygritte from A Storm of Swords.

    Andrew,

Most of them aren’t soldiers, though. And they have a desperate lack in equipment. When you try to kill and armored, horsed knight with a stone ax, you’re dead meat. And Tormund can’t be the leader of the Wildlings in season 5, he’ll probably get captured and take Val’s role (to be the one sent out to the Wildlings strike a deal with their new leader- Varamyr?- and let them pass through the Wall).

I bet that shot in the post is Jon wondering how he never got know Tormund quite as intimate as in the books. Watching a fight like that without learning about the fabled golden ring of Tormund beforehand, travesty.

Stannis’ army is much better armed and IRRC they’re ahorse which is a huge advantage over those on foot. Plus his army is trained and disciplined. I don’t think the wildlings retreated in an organized way so much as they just scattered. The element of surprise was important too.

I did get logged out again. Is anyone else still having problems? It’s really annoying.

  45. Ser Florian
    Posted June 8, 2014 at 7:42 pm | Permalink

    Andrew,

The Wildlings have no discipline, no tactics, poor weapons and armour, little in the way of organisation, and they’re not an army… they’re a people on the move, with more non-combatants than actual fighters. In the books, they’re caught unawares, in their camp… they’re not arrayed for battle, certainly not against an enemy coming from the direction that Stannis and the Eastwatch Rangers come from. They’re surprised by their legendary enemies, the black cloaked Night’s Watch, and Southron Knights all in steel. The Wildling line isn’t broken… there is no Wildling line. The Wildling’s break. If they’d stayed around they might have prevailed. If they’d met in an open battle, with time to prepare, they might have prevailed. But Stannis and the Watch come down on them, and they run away.

And sure, Tormund might have wanted to regroup, but this wasn’t an orderly retreat. This was panicked flight, in all directions, with a lot of what kept the Wildlings together gone… a lot of clan leaders dead or captured, Mance dead or captured. And the Watch just got 5,000 reinforcements. Tormund might have tried to regroup, but not many would be listening to him. And the longer it took, the more time Stannis and the Watch would have to prepare for their renewed attack.

No mammoths were harmed in the production of this episode.

During post-production on the other hand they were barbequed and served up with Dornish peppers and icewine for a real Ice and Fire meal.

    Steel_Wind,

Yes they amped her up a bit but what’s the alternative? Would you rather she had tea and crumpets? She’s a wildling, a member of a raiding party on a mission for Mance Rayder. She’s not at finishing school. This is war. But I do agree she is not an innocent. She wasn’t an innocent in the book either.

    WRONG.

They had to kill the Old Man who kept the horses for the Night’s Watch. He’d seen them and they were on a secret assault mission to take Castle Black and open the gate for Mance.

In the books, Mole’s Town is hastily abandoned as the civvies there rush to Castle Black in the wake of Jon’s Warning. They are never slaughtered. The Wildlings are at the “gates” of Castle Black within 48 hours of Jon’s escape. The rampage South of the Wall as depicted in Season 4 never happens in the books.

It’s a very different matter to kill one man to maintain your mission’s secrecy, rather than descend upon entire villages and rape and slaughter every man, woman and child in it.

From the synopsis it will have Dany, a scene at the Wall, the fall out of the trial( Tyrions break out and a Qyburn/Mountain scene at least), and Bran meeting Blood Raven/Children reveal. Other scenes im assuming will pop up: Brotherhood/LS reveal with Bri and Pod, Yara and Balon death somehow revealed?, Final Arya-Hound scene, possibley a Blackfish scene. Thats a lot of jumping around to do. Good thing we have 66 minutes!

Well, we haven’t seen him for 3 episodes, so that’s a couple hundred pages of content. I’m really hoping that they don’t include him in the “Previously On”, as that would be a HUGE spoiler.

And speaking of huge spoilers, I went to the unsullied preview link and there was one fansided link asking if Ygritte dies in tonight’s episode and another asking if Jon dies in tonight’s episode. It’s a given that major characters involved in a battle could end up dying, but that seems like a bit of a giveaway, especially since the links are on an unsullied page.

I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

Above is my favorite quote from the book, and I love how GRRM repeats the italicized part of these vows over and over and over. I hope we get to hear this mantra at least twice tonight, given the title of the episode!

    Ginevra,

Haha me too! Darth Sansa has jumped up many levels on my person power ranking now.

Also, it’s just really fulfilling to see her become a player in the game rather then the constant victim she has been these 4 seasons.

In just really looking forward to see what D&D have this new Darth Sansa do…

I also bet Sophia Turner is really excited to bring out this new side of a much more confident, adult like and just devious Sansa….

    Ginevra:
This is a spoiler, even for book readers, but… on my DVR next week’s episode, The Children, says:“Circumstances north of the Wall are altered by an unexpected arrival.”That has to be Stannis, right? And if he doesn’t come until next week, that means that tonight’s episode will end mid-fight?

No. The fight at the wall is not a fight in the books at least; it’s a siege that lasts close to a week. There is the attack on Castle Black by the Wildlings from the South immediately after Jon’s Escape at Queen’s Crown. Then the fight in the dark at the Wall where the Watch cannot even see who they are shooting at. Then the fight over the next several days — might be as much as a week — as the Night’s Watch continuously throws Mance back.

Then reinforcements arrive, including Slynt and Ser Alliser, and Jon is thrown in a cell. He is, a couple of days later, sent over the Wall to treat with Mance. And it’s only then that Stannis shows up.

They change the setup at Castle Black from the very fist episode. The Stair is gone, so that aspect of the first wildling raid from the South can’t go to canon; the Tunnel is not a diagonal one man at at time shooting gallery with multiple gates, so that aspect of the siege changes too; Castle Black is given a wall and a gate and far less ruined towers, so the arrows in the dark by Jon and the “boy whore from OldTown” is gone.

So they decide to change the 4 or 5 episode fight and concentrate it all into one big orgy ‘o death.

But Stannis didn’t save the Night’s Watch. The Night’s Watch saved the Night’s Watch. Stannis defeated and captured Mance, thereby dispersing half of the Wildings. I would think that part of the tale will be left for Episode 10.

They have improved upon the books. The books have so much filler. Instead, D&D have made the story much better with the base they were given.

Nobody here knows the ending of the entire saga, so it is safe to say what I am going to say as speculation.

The show is absolutely pointing things into a direction that The Starks make a huge comeback. Just the entire tone of this season paints a much deeper picture then the books do that The Stark Family is what makes a comeback in this saga.

Yet it makes you just that much more excited for next weeks episode. And for people bitching about that, this was an awesome episode even without it so stop bitching like girls. Also the scene where Ygritte dies was very well done and even though I knew it was coming it still was very sad. All in all another great episode for an amazing season of GOT!

Miz: Yes, I’m sure the interminable Ros scenes were an “improvement”.
Destroying the character of Stannis and Jaime was an “improvement”.
Turning Daenerys into a Mary Sue was an “improvement”.
Putting a woman who couldn’t act to save her life as “Shae the funny whore” was an “improvement”.
Removing iconic lines like “Only Cat” is an “improvement”.

There are some changes that have to be made for an adaptation for time and budget reasons. The later books have some filler. Not this one, and even then–there is a difference between cutting for time and thinking you can simply write a better than the source material.

And they can’t.The fact that you’re accusing anyone with valid criticism of the show as a “troll” shows what a fanboy you are.I watch because I love the book series and I wanted to see this succeed. The first season was largely great, but it keeps getting worse.I hadn’t tuned in since the Jaime rape debacle, but watched tonight hoping it would get better. It didn’t.So take your smarmy “hurr if you don’t like it don’t watch it” attitude and shove it.

I wouldn’t call your comments valid criticisms. I would say you have unrealistic expectations of this show that can never be met. That actually would never be met for any saga of this size of depth when being transferred from book to video.

And you do come across as a troll when we just saw one of the most amazing hours of television and all you have is complaints.

I understand if you want to hate on it. I hate one a lot of things too in life. I just don’t waste my time posting on message boards about them. Do you know what I do with the stuff I hate as much as you hate this episode? I just don’t watch it and do something else.

Yup, I just watched the LoTR trilogy a few days ago and while HD was fantastic, this did it much more for me. So much happening on so many levels (both literally and figuratively), so much emotion. And there we had once-cowardly Sam manning up and “ser” Janos Slynt hiding in a supply closet — not even armed with a leg of lamb, like the little girl in front of him. That block is going to be extra fun next year.

I’m not outraged by the ending in the slightest. The parley with Mance and then Stannis, Stannis STANNIS would have taken much longer than 8 minutes of screen time to pull off, so we’ll see it unfold over probably 15 next week in the extended episode. Stannis’ arrival won’t be held back to next year.

My guess is that to do it right needed 2 or 3 cuts to show the passage of time–time to get to Mance, time to show his troubles getting through and then finally a third separate scene for the meeting and Stannis’ arrival. I’m good with how it went down.

Right now I’m just verklempt, for lack of a better term.

Cool episode – preferred this to Helm’s Deep. I think the comparison is apt. This one tops it because Helm’s Deep has some ridiculous junk in it, such as Legolas surfing on shields, dwarves getting tossed and Aragorn launching himself into a massive crowd of orcs and surviving. And I prefer Marshall’s camera style to Jackson’s unhinged camera.

Since both Jon’s conversation with Mance and Stannis’ arrival at the Wall have been left for episode 10, I believe episode 10 is going to be significantly lengthened. It will likely be the longest season finale we have ever seen.

At least I hope so. There’s so much to wrap up!

I don’t understand why some of you are so savage and confrontational if someone says something even the least bit different than what you think. It’d be super awesome if people on this site could just hear each other out and not call each other “dickweed” and tell other people their opinions mean nothing. I hope some of you get the opportunity to create the biggest television so you can do better instead of talking about doing better. I agree that they do some questionable things but GRRM’s world is BARELY adaptable as it is. It’s too big. This version is a TV show, they treat it as such.

I think it is safe to say that a couple of the big events that we Sullied have surmised would be in ep 10 may end up as opening events of next season: Arya on the ship, anything after Jon meets with Mance, perhaps even Tywin’s death and Lady Stoneheart. According to the preview, we WILL see the dragons chained, Tyrion released and wandering the passages with Varys, Bran at the cave with the CotF. Also looks like we’re getting a bonus Jaime/Cersei sex scene. What’s that all about? Am I forgetting something there?

Gotta rewatch tomorrow to digest all of the changes and appreciate the episode in show cannon. One thing that bugged me right off the bat: Gilly walking right up to the gate with the Wildlings in the gully who she saw, but no Wildling watchmen saw her?? They weren’t watching the road that close to the enemy?? What??

    Ser Osis of Liver,

Agree with a lot of your points! Can’t wait for next week.

It truly was a great hour of television! Neil Marshall has been amazing for this show, and I hope he comes back! I think that the fact that they left the episode as is, will play into next week’s extra long a eason finale really great!

As for the size of the battle, it would have been wrong, speaking for myself, to expect a battle the size of those in LOTR. Whoever has read the novels, they know the numbers out up in the novels about the size of the armies is more realistic…

Besides, remember this was just the avangarde of Mance’s army! He was just testing the Night’s Watch and their defences. We haven’t seen his entire army, only a fraction of it! This was just one night of bye battle! In a way night time helped the Night’s Watch, they could better hide how few of them there rely were, in daylight that will be impossible…

That way it makes what Jon is trying to do make even more sense and you-know-who’s arrival even more meaningful!

    House Nieder,

There is is a difference between an opinion and just trolling and trying to be a contrarian just because… There is a place for honest criticism and disagreements, but read some of the above statements again and tell me that those are that…

I refused to believe it. But The Game of Thrones wiki has now spoken. Pyp and Grenn are officially gone.
At least they got more respect than Dorreah and Irri

I’m confused. Why are you hunting for spoilers instead of watching the episode?

    Ashara D: Tywin’s death

The preview clearly showed someone walking toward a closed door with a crossbow

My only true gripe with the show for the North is the lack of Mance. That bugs.

Valdred Dethstorm: I guess people are never happy. With “Blackwater” people complained because there was too much drunken Cersei and too little battle.

Well I wasn’t one of them. I guess battles just aren’t my favorite part of the show. It was definitely impressive from a technical standpoint and very well done and you can tell they put a lot of time and money and effort into it.

The Children is scheduled, according to the DVR, for 75 minutes. The description says, in full:

Daenerys must face harsh realities; Bran learns more about his destiny; Tyrion sees the truth of his situation; and circumstances north of the Wall are altered by an unexpected arrival.

Bran and the children of the forest and Bloodraven?!?!?!?!

The fight between Thormund and Ser Alliser was wicked! Say what you will about Ser Alliser, but he can fight! Still processing it all. This is one to re-watch definitely. Alot of stuff in there..

Can someone please explain to me how in the hell Arya is going to get to Braavos when Brienne and Pod run into her and The Hound? I mean seriously… Taking that kind of liberty with the story is crazy to me.

my complaint is the waste of time. last week was the 10 minute monalog about crushing beetles…pleeese. there was so much more to show, and this week the whole show on a battle that could have been done in 20 min so we could see other things. kathunk

You mean last week they wasted time on one of the best scenes of dialogue across all four seasons?

Putting a woman who couldn’t act to save her life as “Shae the funny whore” was an “improvement”.

The book doesn’t have actors in it. The show runners were charged with the task of assembling a massive cast to represent the novels’ sprawling array of characters, and have overwhelmingly done a magnificent job. Dismissing all this outstanding work by seizing on one minor misstep is “fanboy” whining in its purest form.
