Game of Thrones cast members arrive in Belfast to film Season 5
By Lightbringer on in Production.

We learned during the Game of Thrones panel at San Deigo Comic-Con this weekend that Kit Harington would return to the set of Game of Thrones today to film a “great scene” for Season 5. It seems Kit wasn’t the only one heading back to work today, as many of the actors took to social media to announce that they were en route to Belfast, or had already arrived.

Carice Van Houten gave us the biggest tease of the day, tweeting a picture of what appears to be a solider of Stannis Baratheon’s army on set, which may very well mean that Kit and Team Dragonstone shared their first day back together.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was also in Belfast today, and a very lucky fan from Northern Ireland got to meet the actor.

Sarah Hannah from Belfast tweeted that her long day at work today was made well worth it by a smile from the Queen Regent herself, Lena Headey.

Finn Jones, Daniel Portman, and Will Tudor announced that they were heading to Belfast.

And the cast may have celebrated their first day on set by going out for dinner together, as this fan claims he saw five cast members dining in the same restaurant as him.

Sophie Turner revealed in an interview with The Wrap on Saturday that she will begin filming for Season 5 in Belfast on Wednesday.

It looks like after a quiet first week of filming and a crazy weekend at Comic-Con, filming for Season 5 is now well underway!

    So. Freaking. Excited.

Also, I think the entire cast seems to be thrilled about returning to work this year. All of their excitement is palpable.

Still no fucking Arianne…or Victarion…or Euron. Of course the showrunners are running out of material, they’re cutting everything important out of the books. Arianne and the Greyjoys are like half of A Feast for Crows’s storyline. So if they want to whine about how “We’re running out of source material George”, I’ll fucking point to this. This is just a load of bullshit. Way to fuck up the books. I refuse to believe that all of these characters are unimportant to the story in the books. So now that means to me that Jeyne Westerling could be important, Jojen can be important, Grenn and Pyp could be important. So even though the show killed them off when they’re alive and well in the books, that means to me that the showrunners really don’t give a flying fuck what they do anymore.

So, how many cast members are shooting in Belfast now and which parts of the storyline is being shot? Interior scenes, the Vale for sure, what else? Obviously they are shooting some Northern scenes since Kit and Carice are there – is it just the interior shots?

Since there has been no word of Alfie Allen, Iwan Rheon or Michael McElhatton, and we know that Elizabeth Webster (Fat Walda) starts to shoot in the autumn, so obviously they are not shooting any of the Winterfell scenes now.

Ugh. I sincerely hope this is trolling. Arianne is easily replaced by the billions of other Dornishmen that will be in the show and Dorne is already overkill. The greyjoys are not important. They have to fit these books into seven seasons and make the story work for a television audience and thats not going to happen by casting every grain of sand in Dorne. The only reason Dorne is even in the show is becaue Faegon needs a wife. AFFC is popularly the worst book in the series and that is because George decided to introduce all of Dorne and make us all read about them for hundreds of pages and theyre doing all they can with that in the show. Nobody is going to keep watching if we hang all the original characters and introduce a whole new crew with two seasons left after their introduction. AFFC/ADWD is very dull but even so theres a lot of progression to get into one season and it isnt going to happen when we keep in every page of the book.

I really hope we get more casting news in the coming months… There’s still so many characters that I’d like to see cast for this season. Such as Euron and Victarion, Griff and company, etc Also I’m fairly confident they’re cutting out Quentyn, which is fine since I never really enjoyed his character anyways, but I am curious who is going to take his place.

Far too many people crying over who has been cast and who hasn’t. At the end of the day, it’s going to maintain it’s title of one of the very best shows ever made, whilst the books will continue to be arguably the most popular book series of all time.

In terms of Quentyn’s death I think they’ll give it to Hizdar because he will be useless after Dany and her army are done with Meereen. On the Greyjoys and Griff & company I think they’ll have them announced as minor/background characters so to keep book readers guessing and show watchers clueless

…except the reason AFFC is pretty much unanimously held as the weakest book is the presence of so many meaningless Brienne, Dorne, and Greyjoy chapters. The showrunners have to cut something to make Feast+Dance into one good season of television instead of 2-3 terrible seasons. [Feast+Dance would've been a single, great 900 page books, instead of 2 mediocre books totaling 2200 pages]. The Brienne stuff will necessarily be drastically changed (which can only be for the best. If the Greyjoy stuff is trimmed or cut, complaining in this way seems to be either ignorant or needlessly petulant.

The show is more important than the books now. The sooner we all accept that, the easier things will be. (I’m a book-first fan, and the books are more important TO ME, but that is meaningless in any larger sense or discussion)

The Griffs could still be coming; we don’t know when Peter Dinklage will start filming (it seems to just be the Belfast people for now).

Euron and Victarion could be cast later, or Yara could simply become Queen, and she could take their places. It wouldn’t be impossible to continue the Iron Islands story that way, it would just be much less nuanced.

    Val isn’t important.

And the Kindly Man is most likely being replaced by Jaqen. I actually think this makes sense, since it would be redundant to show both Bran and Arya being mentored by stereotypical, wise, white-haired fantasy dudes.

    Harry Lime,

Yeah, or the Kindly Man could take on his appearance to “make things easier”, maybe? Either way I like the actor so I’m fine with it, since this is Arya’s story, and the show watchers will remember his and be excited to see a plot threat from Season 2 continue.

This is a story about the Stark children and the Lannisters and Danny and some characters surrounding them. The books aren’t going anywhere. Book readers complaining need to ask themselves, if the show creators filmed the side plots Martin wallowed in, which characters would need to give up screen time to accommodate these? Jon? Tyrion? Arya? Danny? Which existing actors would need to be cut to accommodate the casting of all these Dornish characters and Greyjoys who look to have little to do with the two primary plots of the show, the game of thrones, and the battle of ice and fire?

I think Trystane will take Quentyn’s place. Especially with the emphasis on Martell/Lannister relations it’ll make sense. Myrcella (after certain events) will be taken back to KL, Trystane will take on Quentyn’s role.

To take over/play the Kindly Man is what I assume. The most logical way to go would be for Arya’s mentor to assume Jaqen’s face for her, because it’s the face she knows. The FM she knows was also just assuming that face, after all. He could say something like “There is no Jaqen H’ghar. I am No One. But I can be Jaqen for you if you want that.”

If they were doing the Oldtown stuff (which I don’t see happening before season 6 anyway), they would have to use Patrick O’Kane.

Whatever characters don’t make the cut this season are likely to never be in the show. D&D have said that this is the last season for expansion. The last two seasons will be about bringing the story to a conclusion. And conclusions typically don’t have many new characters.

No one can reasonably take Quentyn’s place. It’s been quoted in the series, “Not till the sun rises in the west and sets in the east.” Either Doran’s son comes to Mereen and does the deed or Dany remains barren.

AFFC is nearly impossible to adapt to television. Most of the chapters have internal character conflicts.

Season 4 went into books 4 & 5 for some characters. This season could even go into book 6 for a few of the story lines without really missing much.

i really hope kindly man just takes jaqens face and isnt actually jaqen that would be terrible. People keep talking about trimming the story but arianne did not take up so much story and she was a good character to throw in, plus she was hot. She would really have only 3-4 scenes. Seducing oakheart, getting the crew together, failed queenmaker attempt, getting locked in tower. While the sandsnakes had like one scene so far total. I still feel that the greyjoys will be absolutely essential at some point in the future but i think they might save their plot till season 6. Why not cut one of the sandsnakes and keep arianne? Why are D&D cutting pov characters over non povs?

How about you contribute money and pay those actors and give them some lines In addition with the new cast coming for season 5. It is obvious which characters are important to the main plot and which are just there to give a character company. It’s not like they killed Mellisandre and Stannis, you will have my permission to bitch if so.

The showrunners are not ruining anything, the show is still successful and delivering it in a way it would work on TV. Stick to reading the books if you want it like the books. All the bitching and crying don’t make you smarter or surperior or make you seem like you will do a better job adapting ASOIAF because you won’t.

Walder Frey is definitely returning, David Bradley has talked about it in interviews. (And Walda, though I don’t know if she counts since she is a part of the North storyline.) I don’t know about the others. They don’t normally announce returning guest stars (except in promo material just before the season itself).

    The Bastard,

I’m sorry but I’m still not convinced that this evil masterplan is just for nothing, the dragons are the only 3 nuclear weapons in this world, it doesn’t make sense that Daenerys will be having them untill until the endgame. Someone else will take at least one of them, either raegal or viserion, and the only person in westeros who happens to posess an artifact that can control them is Euron, who just gave the horn to his brother Victarion and sent him to meereen to steal the dragons. And we already have a chapter with victarion in WoW and he is everyday closer to meereen.
So don’t tell me this has no effect in the story. I’m not one those dull book readers who complain about about everything in the show, in fact I love almost all of the changes they’ve made in the series, I just think this one shouldn’t be left out… But it’s too soon too asume this, they never reveal the full cast in the begining, ramsay was never revealed and now he is becoming a major player, now that he is Ramsay Bolton.
