Watch the special effects reel for Game of Thrones Season 6

Every year, Game of Thrones uses more and more special visual effects—it’s up for an Outstanding Special Visuals Effects Emmy for “Battle of the Bastards”—and every year, the many companies that work on those effects release highlight reels that show us what’s real and what’s computer-generated. Mackevision, one of several firms to work on Season 6, recently uploaded one such reel. Take a look.

As always, I’m impressed to see how much work went into seemingly innocuous shots. We’re used to thinking of special effects as only being used in big, flashy battle sequences and the like, but establishing shots of landscapes and castles often require just as much effort. Look at how much went into the shot of Cersei staring out the window of the Red Keep at 0:21, for instance. I never would have stopped to think about that.

But if the special effects technicians are doing their jobs, I suppose that’s how it should be. The final shots of Season 6, with Daenerys army setting out for Westeros, are particularly impressive, and took more than one company to pull off.

We’ll be on the lookout for more of these reels. Iloura, another special effects company, already released one focused on “Battle of the Bastards,” and there may be more on the way.
