Game of Thrones Season 6 wins big at the Critics Choice Awards

The Critics Choice Awards were yesterday, and Game of Thrones Season 6 walked away with the Best Drama Award, although it lost in a few other categories.

The awards were held in Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar. Despite the controversy that has dogged the awards, not to mention the untimely arrest of host T. J. Miller this past week, the show, which was done in partnership with Entertainment Weekly, went off without a hitch, with Kristian Nairn (Hodor) even doing DJ honors.

While La La Land carried the day at the movies, we here at WiC cared more about the television categories, where Game of Thrones Season 6 was up for several nominations. The good news? GoT carried the all-important Best Drama category. It beat out several heavy hitters, including first-time nominees Westworld, Stranger Things and The Crown, both of which are only in their first season. Also in the category were This Is UsBetter Call Saul and Mr. Robot.

But in the Best Supporting Actor category, Peter Dinklage and Kit Harington were passed over as they were at the Emmys, this time in favor of John Lithgow for his turn as Winston Churchill in The Crown. Lena Heady and Emilia Clarke were both nominated for Best Supporting Actress. They too lost out, to Thandie Newton of Westworld. Game of Thrones also did not win the Most Bingeworthy award, which was voted on by fans. That went to Outlander over on STARZ.
