Season 7 filming pics: Winter comes to King’s Landing (UPDATED)

The Game of Thrones production is shooting in two outdoor locations at the moment: in the Spanish city of Cáceres and the Croatian city of Dubrovnik. New images are trickling out of both locations. Let’s hit Cáceres first, but beware mild SPOILERS.

We reported this morning that John Bradley (Sam Tarly) was in costume in the area.

Now, El Periódico Extremadura has a shot of him in action, driving a horse-drawn carriage through the city streets, with Gilly (Hannah Murray) and Little Sam in tow.

And a couple of clearer shots:

These shots were taken in the Plaza de las Veletas, where the show has set up a marketplace. If Sam and Gilly are there, we assume it’s a marketplace in Oldtown.

Although Mark Mylod is the director on the ground for the grisly parade scene being filmed nearby, Hoy has a photo of director Matt Shakman near where Bradley and Murray are filming.

Shakman is directing Episodes 4 and 5 of Season 7, so Sam’s turn around town (Sam leaving town?) will fall somewhere in there.

Next, let’s jet off to Dubrovnik, where Lena Headey (Cersei), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime), and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (the Mountain) have all been seen in costume and ready to film. Their presence marks Dubrovnik as a stand-in for King’s Landing. According to The Dubrovnik Times, those three actors may have already left the city, but the crew will stay on for another day. Today, it was filming on a set built in front of Dubrovnik’s Dominican Monastery.

The Lannister flags reinforce that we’re looking at King’s Landing. The big news, though, is that the crew brought a snow machine.

So there’s snow in King’s Landing. In George R.R. Martin’s novels, snow starts to fall on the city in the last chapter of A Dance with Dragons, the last book to be released. Now it’s come to HBO’s adaptation.

Jeremy Podeswa is the director on the ground in Dubrovnik. He’s directing the premiere and the finale of Season 7, so this snowfall will happen either really early or really late in the season.

And now, I leave you with an image of Sam, Gilly, and Baby Sam in that horse-drawn carriage, being helpfully driven by a guy in a green-screen suit who will be removed in post-production. Movie magic!

And that’s a wrap for filming in Cáceres!
