Kristian Nairn (Hodor) and Eugene Simon (Lancel) remember their final scenes on Game of Thrones

It’s nearly a year later and we’re still broken up about the death of Hodor, faithful servant to House Stark. Happily, actor Kristian Nairn is here to help us through the paid. He spoke to the Belfast Telegraph about the character and his famous, time-twisting final scene. “It was incredibly emotional and physically demanding, and at the end it felt like an exhale,” he said. “I was proud of that scene and Isaac [Hempstead Wright] was the one who got to wrap me and say over the microphone: ‘Mr Nairn that’s us finished, you’re wrapped.'”

"It was the best way to go. You got to play the magical stuff about all the time travel, you got to be honourable and there are so few honourable deaths in Game of Thrones, they’re usually just brutal and horrible."

But is this the last we’ve seen of Hodor? The Telegraph, saying aloud what everyone’s thinking, asked Nairn if Hodor could return, possibly as a member of Night King’s army. “As a fan I’m not sure I would love that, but as an actor I would absolutely love that and it would be so much fun to play that.”

"But I kind of think it’s nice the way it’s left, there have been enough rebirth moments in Game of Thrones. Maybe he’s not dead, maybe he’s just roaming round the countryside eating berries like a grizzly bear!"

Okay, but really, is he coming back as a wight? “I’m just going to say no but I might be lying. I can’t give anything away. I have let things slip before by accident and I’ve learnt the hard way.”

Nairn has been around the block too many times to let anything slip, but before we move I’ll note that he did appear in a recent HBO promo alongside other members of he season 7 cast. Just saying…

Meanwhile, Eugene Simon (Lancel Lannister) talked to Fox News about his memorable final scene: blown to smithereens while trying to step a pool of wildfire under the Sept of Baelor from igniting. “This is ‘Game of Thrones.’ Everybody dies,” he said by way of reminder. “Any actor, even if for a minute, [who] thinks they’re not going to die is living in a realm of naivete that I can’t even get into. I have a theory that everyone is going to die…. and the truth is that I got a lovely death.”

"My most vivid memory would be dragging my half paralyzed body across the floor covered in bat s–t while having blood bursting out of my back and literally having to carry my own body weight for the entire day. It was a tough call having me push to get that scene done. Also, when the flames went off in front of me eyes… we actually had petroleum on the floor amongst the green goo. And I think, for about three seconds, I might have smelled my burned eyebrows as the fire went off within millimeters of my face. When you smell your burned eyebrows for the first time, it tends to stick with you."

Other notable bits from the Nairn interview:

  • Nairn discussed his season 1 nude scene a bit: “[W]e had this massive prosthetic and it had to be attached to my body with glue and it’s actually glued into your own region. That did not come out quickly, I’m telling you! I felt sorry for the make-up girl – these things you suffer for your art!”
  • Nairn, who lives in Northern Ireland, is well aware of the economic boost Game of Thrones has given to the area.
  • When he was younger, Nairn performed as a drag queen named Revvlon. Here you go:

What I wouldn’t give for video of that performance.
