3. The Doom of Valyria

The birthplace of House Targaryen, the Valyrian empire was a tremendously powerful civilization that crumbled due to a mysterious cataclysm. It was also the birthplace of the Targaryen family. We could see the rise of House Targaryen and why the family chose to flee Valyria before the Doom.

This is the story we know the least about, and would require a writer with a lot of imagination. Also, the fantasy elements would be more extreme, since there dragons flying around everywhere, not to mention whatever other magic the Valyrians used to go from humble sheep farmers to conquerors. (The CGI budget could be a potential speed bump.) Jane Goldman has worked in many different genres, including fantasy, so we think she’d be best for the job. Plus, George R.R. Martin would be working with her to fill in the gaps.

4. The Dance of Dragons

The Dance of Dragons, mentioned by Princess Shireen Baratheon in Game of Thrones season 5, was the name given to the Targaryen civil war, where Aegon II fought his half-sister Rhaenyra for the Iron Throne. By the time the war was over, both claimants were dead, and Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III was crowned king.

Many famous battles happened during Dance, including several dragon-on-dragon aerial dogfights. Again, the CGI budget would be a hurdle, but this would make for a wonderful story. Considering he writes movies about giant monsters, Max Borenstein would be a good fit for this dragon-heavy conflict.
