Hair Watch 2018: Kit Harington explains the hidden importance of his Game of Thrones hairdo

There are few things more obsessed over than Kit Harington’s alluring Game of Thrones hairstyle. The Jon Snow (see Aegon Targaryen) actor recently talked to Refinery 29 about his pulchritudinous hair, which as it turns out, is even more important to the plot of Game of Thrones than fans might think. “They wanted me to look more like Ned Stark,” Harington explains. “There’s a real reason behind [my hairstyle], to show how the story was evolving.”

Jon Snow’s hair has gone through many changes. In earlier seasons, his luxurious locks flowed freely down his shoulders, curling around his ears, bewitching wildlings and the brothers of the Night’s Watch alike. I mean, let’s be honest, his comely coiffure is the real reason he was voted into the empty Lord Commander’s slot, vacated by Jeor Mormont, whose hair had long ago abandoned him.

However, his magnificent mane wasn’t enough to keep his brothers from stabbing him to death in the season 5 finale. When Lord Snow was resurrected by Melisandre in season 6, he decided a trendsetting manbun would be his personal style, and the world took notice.

"I haven’t been allowed to touch it for years. It’s going to be weird, because it becomes part of your look as an actor. It’s strange to think now that I can change it. Do I want to change it? Am I going to change it? I don’t know."

Interestingly enough, Harington has yet to cut his hair, even though Game of Thrones season 8 has been finished with filming for a while now. Recently, the actor explained that he had to keep his hair long because there might be reshoots. “That’s what I’ve learned from this,” he said. “Just make a statement, then backtrack. Keep everyone confused.”

Moving on from his hair, Harington is now the celebrity spokesperson for Dolce & Gabanna’s new cologne. As he explains, if Jon Snow were to use a cologne, The One Grey would fit his personality perfectly. “He probably wouldn’t wear any scent,” he said. “But if he was going to, you know, I’d have to say he’d wear this one. The name is pretty good for Jon.”

Whatever happens to Jon Snow in season 8, we will be watching his hair with bated breath. Game of Thrones returns for its eighth and final season early in 2019.
