Netflix should take pointers from this incredible-looking Avatar: The Last Airbender fan film

About a month back, Netflix announced it was making a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Nickelodeon’s beloved animated epic from the mid-2000s. The show had already been adapted as a disastrously terrible live-action movie in 2010, so reactions have been guarded to cautiously optimistic. But if Netflix is looking for a way to make sure it doesn’t mess this up, it might want to look to director Josh Mabie and Re:Anime, who are teaming up to make a live-action fan film based on a climatic scene from the series finale of the Nickelodeon show: the Agni Kai (fire duel) between siblings Zuko and Azula.

Based on these Instagram pictures, the fan film looks like it’s going to be pretty amazing, or at least very accurate to the original show. It stars Yoshi Sudarso as Prince Zuko, Nikki SooHoo as Azula and Yasmin Kassim as Katara.

And for comparison’s sake:

According to Geek Tyrant, Re:Anime CEO Nik Shaw is making this short to show Netflix that it’s the right production company to take on this project. I’m curious to see the finished product, but at first glance, I’m pretty convinced.

Netflix has already released one image from its upcoming series, an image of lead character Aang leading his flying bison Appa across a snowy landscape.

This is just concept art, though, so there’s no one to tell Re:Anime it’s too late to get in on the ground floor of this thing. Here’s hoping it works out for them.
