Doctor Who to Cast David Schofield as Odin

News of another guest star for Doctor Who has come down the pike recently. David Schofield, known for his role as King Alined in Merlin, will be playing the part of Odin in the two part episode ‘The Girl Who Died’ and ‘The Woman Who Lived.’ It seems that the role was originally intended to go to Brian Blessed, however he needed to remove himself due to an illness. Hopefully, he will be well soon.

These episodes are also set to feature Maisie Williams and comedian Rufus Hound. This two part episode is also set to be a departure from the norm for Doctor Who, as these episodes will be period pieces. The Doctor potentially back in the time of the Vikings is certainly an interesting match, and one that seems as though has been a long time in coming.

In all of his travels through the universe, the Doctor has met quite a few people who have claimed to be gods. Yet, even with that being the case, Doctor Who seems to be very careful to tread lightly around the subject of the gods and religion in general. Given the inclusive nature of the program, and how Doctor Who promotes unity, this makes a lot of sense.

The nature of Doctor Who makes it interesting that such a character will be added. Will this be a being pretending to be a god, as is so often the case? Or will Doctor Who have this actually be Odin, similar to how Robin Hood was proven to be a real person in the Whoniverse last season?

It will also be interesting to see how the Doctor and Odin interact. After all, his interactions with Robin Hood were not exactly positive, with each trying to one up the other. Granted, this was early in the time of the Twelfth Doctor when he was still trying to find himself, but how will he react to another being that he may not feel actually exists? It is not as though it would be easy to one up a deity, even if the person attempting is a Time Lord.

It will be interesting to see how the idea of Odin, and the Viking episode, will be handled. It is certainly something that I am looking forward to watching!
