Doctor Who News: Moffat on Movie, Female Doctor Possibilities
By Barry Rice
Steven Moffat talks about the possibility for a female Doctor and shoots down a Doctor Who movie. Plus, a Lucy Lawless, a historical companion and more!
Happy Sunday, Doctor Who Watchers!
We’ve got a few interesting items to talk about today. Steven Moffat has been spouting off again regarding the potential for a Doctor Who movie and the Doctor becoming a woman, both of which are topics that will never die.
More from Doctor Who

- Ncuti Gatwa is “so nervous” to take on Doctor Who role

- Jodie Whittaker didn’t pick up on any of the hate for her version of the Doctor
Regarding the movie, Moffat’s argument still makes no sense to me. He claims they would have to take off a year from the series just to do the movie. Really? How long does it take to shoot a movie? Two months maybe? I think the series’ shooting schedule could accommodate a film as well. If it’s REALLY that big of a deal, knock off a couple of episodes from the next series. I think we could all live with 10 episodes instead of 12, if it meant we’d get a big budget Doctor Who feature film. As I wrote back in April, The X-Files managed to pull it off 20 years ago, and their seasons were TWICE the length of Doctor Who‘s.
As for the female Doctor argument, I love Moffat’s quotes on the subject this week. He’s coming at it from the perfect angle. It shouldn’t done for political reasons, but it shouldn’t be discounted either. He had a lot of great things to say on the subject, but this one is my favorite:
"“The day it will work is when somebody says, ‘That person would be amazing,’ and the most conservative, most traditional member of the audience says, ‘Oh god, yes. I would hate the idea of a lady Doctor, but that one would be great.'”"
We’ve got lots more than just those two stories today, though. Here at Doctor Who Watch, we spent Saturday previewing September’s Radio Times Festival, longing for a Lucy Lawless guest-spot on Doctor Who, and discussing the implications of naming parts of Pluto’s moon after the TARDIS and Gallifrey.
There’s also pieces on visiting London as a Whovian, the new BBC digital storefront, why the next companion should come from a time period other than ours (an idea I wholeheartedly support), and more.
First up, here are this morning’s top stories from right here at Doctor Who Watch:
Lucy Lawless Should Guest Star on Doctor Who – Leah Tedesco
"Bringing Lawless onto Doctor Who would be the perfect opportunity to revisit Leela’s character while also giving a nod to Xena. On Doctor Who, Lawless could play a character who is a relative, friend, or even enemy of Leela’s, most likely from Sevateem."
Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat to Appear at First-Ever Radio Times Festival – Barry Rice
Doctor Who: The Potential Dalek Invasion of Charon – David Hill
"Of course, naming these features after the Doctor’s spaceship and home planet, respectively, could cause issues. Could landing the TARDIS in the TARDIS Chasma cause a terrible paradox?"

5 Reasons Why a Historical Companion is a Good Idea – Doctor Who TV
"However it’s not just 2005 onwards that has lacked in historical companions. In the overall 50 plus years its been on, we’ve only ever really had two companions that came from Earth’s history, Jamie McCrimmon and Katarina, one who was memorable (more below) and the other who is forgettable due to her brief amount of time on the show."

A Doctor Who Movie? Why You Shouldn’t Hold Your Breath – CinemaBlend
"…Moffat responded: “What are we going to do, shut down for a year and make a movie? Does everybody want that? You’d rather a movie than a whole series?”"
Steven Moffat: The Doctor is neither 100% male or female – like all of us – Radio Times
"“The key thing about changing The Master to Missy is that The Doctor doesn’t react to it at all. He just carries on talking. He is shocked that she’s there; he doesn’t say anything about the fact she’s a woman, so clearly that’s a very big statement. That’s just a thing that happens.”"
