Winter is Coming

Game of Thrones season 7 is over, and several the special effects companies that worked on it have released reels highlighting their accomplishments. Let’s start with Mackevision, which did tremendous work on the sequence from “The Queen’s Justice” where the Unsullied invaded Casterly Rock, as well as work on the armies outside the gates of King’s Landing in “The Dragon and the Wolf” and Euron’s fleet pulling into King’s Landing in “Dragonstone.”

Moving on, Zoic Studios did tremendous work on some of the interiors from the season, including the Dragonstone throne room, the Citadel, the caves Jon and Dany visit, and the chambers under King’s Landing. And naturally, there’s some battle footage in there, too. We forget how much work even simple moments can take on this show.

Finally, while Rodeo Visual Effects doesn’t have a reel, it does have several before-and-after sliders you can access on its webpage.

Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, before and after Eastwatch was added.

Naturally, the legions of extras playing wights were looking at nothing when Viserion blew up the Wall — there was no real dragon on hand.

The same goes for actor Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy) during her battle against her Uncle Euron’s fleet in “Stormborn.” These actors have to use their imaginations, and we reap the benefit.

Game of Thrones needs a lot of heavy special effects lifting to pull off its ambitious scenes, and these companies will have one more chance to knock our socks off when season 8 goes into post-production an ungodly amount of time from now.
