Get excited Whovians! The Twice Upon a Time synopsis has been revealed!

Whether by accident or on purpose, the BBC has released the synopsis of Twice Upon a Time, the Christmas Special that will come with Twelve’s regeneration. In the BBC Shop, the Blu-Ray of the special is already available, and with it came the synopsis that we can pretty much be sure is coming straight from the source.

There has been talk about what “Twice Upon a Time” will be about, especially recently. Steven Moffat teased that it would be incredibly dark, but does the synopsis hold up to that? Let’s look and see.

If you don’t want to be spoiled for the special, feel free to click away. If you’re dying to know what to expect, read on!

"Two Doctors stranded in a forbidding snowscape, refusing to face regeneration. And a British army captain seemingly destined to die in the First World War, but taken from the trenches to play his part in the Doctor’s story. This is the magical last chapter in the Twelfth Doctor’s epic adventure. He must face his past to decide his future. And the Doctor will realise the resilience of humanity, discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment. It’s the end of an era. But the Doctor’s journey is only just beginning."

What can we make of this synopsis? It certainly is longer than other synopses we received throughout season ten, but it really only gives us information that we already know.

“Forbidding Snowscape” and the Army captain

The two Doctors are in the South Pole, both in the same issue, neither want to regenerate. The army captain mentioned in the synopsis is played by Mark Gatiss, which rules out any rumor he was playing an early Brigadier.

He must face his past to decide his future.

While originally assuming Polly and Ben would make cameos, they might be there for more of the episode. The Twelfth Doctor may be meeting more than just his past self. The companions may come in handy as well.

“Discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment”

This could be the dark part that Moffat teased last week, and while it seems apropos for the Twelfth Doctor to have a darker ending. Of course, humanity and resilience will bring him back, as it always does.

“The end of an era and the Doctor’s journey is only beginning”

This could have two meanings. First off, we’re dealing with the first Doctor’s regeneration. By fact, this means that this begins the journey of the rest of the series. Just by looking at the First Doctor subplot, we have the end of One’s era, and the journey of the show as it was in the 60’s. Of course, we also have the end of Twelve’s era, and in fact, the end of a bigger era.

We have the end of an era of male Doctors, end of Moffat’s era, end of Peter Capaldi’s era. Some would argue it’s also the end of what Doctor Who has been, good or bad. That sentence definitely has more connotation to it than just the episode.

Questions we still have…

Where does Bill come in? It seems like, no offense to Bill fans, the episode could get on well without her. The synopsis doesn’t seem to give any indication of how Bill will fit in during the episode.

Next: David Bradley to continue as the First Doctor in Big Finish audios

Looks like we’ll have to see and continue to wait for any more information the BBC throws our way for the Doctor Who Christmas Special.
