Winter is Coming

Earlier today, design studio Karakter released some of the remarkable concept art it drew up ahead of Game of Thrones season 7. Karakter has been working on the show in this capacity for years, and it’s never turned in work that’s less than stunning:

But Game of Thrones is a big show, and it needs more than one group working on concept art. Artist Kieran Belshaw has been providing HBO with designs for years, and now he’s posted some of his work for season 7. Check out a sampling:

This is from an early conception of Dragonstone, when the team was toying with having the gate to the castle on the beach.

The final product looked more like this.

This is an eerie shot we didn’t see adapted for TV. It looks like a group of Lannister soldiers submerged underwater. I’m guessing they were blown into the river during the fight with Drogon. Unlike Jaime, they didn’t rise again.

The shot of Jon’s crew going beyond the Wall from “Eastwatch.” This ended up getting translated pretty faithfully:

Man, they were married to all this Wild Bunch imagery really early on, weren’t they?

Don’t worry, Jon: You’ll be fine.

Belshaw has a lot of great renderings of the Dragonpit meeting in particular. You can see his full catalog here, including the rest of his work on season 7 and from earlier seasons.

Next: Season 8 filming: A new figure appears on the massive King’s Landing set
