Theon Greyjoy really has only one thing left to live for: Rescuing his sister Yara from their evil uncle Euron. But will he live long enough to pull it off?
Since the early days of Game of Thrones, Theon has been a divided and tortured soul. From choosing to betray his best friend Robb Stark to trying to gain the respect of the Ironborn by holding Winterfell against the Boltons, Theon’s path has been paved with poor choices.
And he’s paid for them, most obviously at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, who tortured him for seasons. Theon has fought his way back to something resembling normalcy since then, helping Sansa Stark escape Winterfell in season 5 and advising his sister Yara thereafter, which is why his inability to help her when Euron attacked their fleet in season 7 was so heartbreaking.
As I see it, there are two ways Theon’s story could end: He could die heroically saving his sister, atoning for his sins in death; or he could, tragically, keep living after Euron and Yara both die, leaving him the de facto leader of the Ironborn. Theon has been beaten down over the years, but I think he has one good fight left in him. It’s just a question of which way it goes.
