The Walking Dead has been gradually losing members of its original cast with each passing season. Granted, Lauren Cohan will eventually return as Maggie Greene, but even she was MIA for a bit there, amidst us losing Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes. And now, we have to prep our delicate hearts for the exit of Danai Gurira as Michonne.
It’s going to be yet another painful goodbye, and I’m not sure I’m ready for it. Sure, Michonne will always live on in our hearts, and we will get our fair share of Gurira in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she plays Okoye. But it’s hard to lose a fan favorite character on a show that’s already bleeding them.
However — however — let’s not lose all hope just yet. While on The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast, “TV’s Top 5,” Walking Dead overboss Scott M. Gimple hinted at something potentially cool around the bend:
We know that Lincoln will return as Rick Grimes in a series of Walking Dead feature films. But we don’t know is what he’ll actually do in those movies. Is it possible that Michonne could be a part of that story? Host Lesley Goldberg said that Gurira “has to participate” in any project. “She’s a movie star after Black Panther,” Goldberg pointed out. “[S]he’s as big of a draw, if not more so, than Andrew Lincoln at this point.”
Agreed. What say you, Gimple? “Oh yeah, absolutely. You just laid it out. I would say, even if she happened not to be a movie star, that would be the case.”
I remember sitting in Black Panther at the premiere and watching her as Okoye and sort of sinking into my chair and being like, ‘Oh my God… Danai’s a movie star’. I think she blew away everyone on the screen. She’s always blown us away, but she was our little secret with 17 million people. Now the secret’s out.
So Goldberg said Gurira “has to participate” in any Walking Dead movie. Gimple agreed, although he didn’t commit to anything specific. Is that confirmation? No, but we’ll take what we can get.
And it does make total sense for Michonne come across Rick at some point, assuming she exits the show alive.
And with Gurira leaving the show anyway, it does free up some time to devote to a movie. Black Panther 2 isn’t coming out until 2022, so she’s got some time to squeeze the movie in there somewhere, right?
