Game of Thrones 609: “Battle of the Bastards”

It’s no easy task to pinpoint the absolute best episode of Game of Thrones, but I’m trying my best. “Battle of the Bastards” splits its time between Essos, where Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) frees Meereen from the control of the Masters, and Westeros, where Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) fight to take their home of Winterfell back from the wicked Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon).

And while the sight of Daenerys and her three dragons torching the Masters’ fleet in Slaver’s Bay is thrilling, Winterfell is where the real action is. After six seasons of being betrayed and nearly wiped from existence, it’s beyond satisfying to see the Starks finally take home a win.

That said, the battle does feature the death of little Rickon Stark, one of a great many hear-in-your-mouth moments the episode delivers. After Jon Snow furiously rides into the enemy lines, director Miguel Sapochnik spreads his wings and treats us to some masterful action filmmaking, including a continues shot that brings home how chaotic it is for Jon in the thick of battle.

Then there’s Sansa, who had suffered mightily at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, riding in to save the day with the Knights of the Vale at her back and crushing Ramsay’s army for good. And the final scene, where Sansa has one final private talk with Ramsay, completes a character journey seasons in the making.
