Star Trek: Discovery 214: “Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2”

When Star Trek: Discovery premiered on CBS All Access, it was like nothing Trek had ever produced before. Starring The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham — a once-disgraced Starfleet officer given a second chance to serve aboard the Discovery — the show pulled in a younger crowd with its updated storytelling, exciting adventures, and big-budget space battles between the Federation and its hated enemy, the Klingons.

Fast-forward to season 2, and the Discovery’s new mission is to solve the mystery of the time-traveling Red Angel. Along the way, the crew comes up against a malevolent artificial intelligence called Control.

Throughout the season, Control was responsible for the deaths of several characters, as well as the destruction of ships and even planets it deemed a nuisance in its bid to be completely free from its human masters in Section 31, the top-secret Federation shadow group tasked with carrying missions most ship captains wouldn’t touch.

By the season 2 finale, “Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2,” Burnham figures out who the Red Angel is, and realizes that the Discovery needs to help the mysterious time traveler get back to the future where Control can never find it.

“Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2” was the most exciting episode of any Star Trek show to date. Not only do we get lots of fast-paced action, but there’s also a hard-earned emotional moment shared between Burnham and Spock, her foster brother. If you’ve never considered yourself a Trekkie, or maybe you just don’t think you’d like Star Trek: Discovery, I urge you to watch this episode and get hooked, and then go back to the series premiere and watch it all from the beginning. You won’t regret it.
