6. “The Christmas Invasion” Season 2, Episode 0

We’re taking it all the way back to the 2005 Christmas special, “The Christmas Invasion,” David Tennant’s first full episode as the Tenth Doctor. If you’re a true Whovian, over the years you’ve become accustomed to the yearly holiday specials that follow a full season.

This one is special because it was right after the first season of the reboot and had to introduce a new Doctor fairly quickly. Christoper Eccleston, the Ninth Doctor, only got one season as the lead character before the switch.

Looking back at this episode, I always find myself baffled at how quickly Tennant makes you fall in love with the Tenth Doctor. Granted, the bulk of the episode involves Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler leading mounting a defense against the invasion of a new alien species known as the Sycorax while the Doctor regenerates. But the minute Tennant’s Tenth Doctor opens the TARDIS doors in his pajamas, you knew that great things were around the corner.

Of all the Christmas specials we’ve had over the years, this one always remains my favorite. It was an exciting and thrilling episode full of many firsts for the franchise, and it’s one that will always be special to me because it kickstarted David Tennant’s time on Doctor Who.
