Winter is Coming

From Loki to She-Hulk to Moon Knight and beyond, here’s why you should get excited for the MANY Marvel TV series coming to Disney+.

Disney+ has given Marvel fans lots of reasons to be excited about what’s coming up in the televison corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. WandaVision paved the way for many more MCU TV series to come, setting the bar pretty high with its avant garde storytelling.

The upcoming Marvel, and there are a lot, will take the MCU in a new direction where inclusion and diversity take center stage. From characters in diverse backgrounds to characters struggling with personal challenges and setbacks, these Disney+ shows are breaking new ground, and may bring a whole new group of fans into the Marvel family.

With each new series comes new opportunities for expansion. It’s the possibility of crossovers and connections to other Marvel projects that make the Disney+ Marvel series so alluring.

Most of this article is concerned with the Marvel shows we have yet to see, but let’s start with what’s already out there:

WandaVision

Release Date: January 15, 2021

Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Teyonah Parris, Kathryn Hahn, Evan Peters, Kat Dennings, Randall Park

Though it’s already aired, there are lots of reasons to be excited for what WandaVision sets up in the larger Marvel Universe.

  1. Wanda’s story will continue in the movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is coming in 2022. Now that the full extent of her powers have been realized, Wanda could take that movie in any number of unexpected directions. Will she find her alternate reality kids somewhere? Will she be a hero? A villain? Her future is wide open.
  2. Monica Rambeau becomes Photon. Her transformation in WandaVision allows her to make an impact in Captain Marvel 2, which will further explore her new powers and what they mean.
  3. Evan Peters’ appearance as Wanda’s brother Pietro shattered the brick wall between 20th Century FOX and Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, setting up possible crossovers in future shows and movies.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Release Date: March 19, 2021

Cast: Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Emily VanCamp, Wyatt Russell, Daniel Bruhl

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a massive hit. If you’re not already watching, here’s why you should be:

  1. This is a chance for two characters to come out of the background and into the spotlight. Anthony Mackie’s Falcon has long been integral to the story of Steve Rogers’ Captain America, but the old “always a bridesmaid and never a bride” bit was getting kind of old for a character who brings so much to the MCU.
  2. Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes aren’t natural teammates. They fought against each other the first time they met, and now they’re on the same side. Though The Falcon and the Winter Soldier isn’t a comedy, there are some brilliant comedic moments that demonstrate that these two characters work incredibly well when paired together.
  3. The scenes of these characters dealing with their home lives are just as important as the big global threat they’re fighting. Seeing Sam with his family and dealing with issues of racial prejudice while Bucky struggles with his mental health are important for viewers to see because these real-life issues impact everyone.

Okay, those are the Marvel shows we’ve already seen. Now here’s why you should be excited about what’s to come:

Loki

Release Date: June 11, 2021

Cast: Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson

Honestly, who isn’t excited about Loki getting his own show?

  1. Loki — that’s the show, not the character — stars a version of Loki who hasn’t yet learned the value of cooperation in Thor: Ragnarok, so he’s still full of mischief and a desire to assume power wherever and whenever possible. He hasn’t had his redemption arc yet, and now that the timeline is all messed up it’s possible he never will. With that in mind, this Loki is free do whatever he pleases when it pleases him, and isn’t that what fans love to see from him?
  2. Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson are a perfect pair. Wilson’s Mobius is in charge of keeping Loki under control as per the rules of the Time Variance Authority, but Loki isn’t one to play by the book. Hopefully Wilson will be the straight man to Hiddleston’s wild card, which should make for comedy gold.
  3. Could the series set up future stories for Loki? MCU czar Kevin Feige won’t give anything away, but it’s certainly possible that Loki’s story could continue in some form or another after the first season of this show wraps up, and more Loki is always a good thing.

What If … ?

Release Date: Summer 2021

Cast: Jeffrey Wright, Michael B. Jordan, Mark Ruffalo, Natalie Portman, Josh Brolin, Hayley Atwell

Who doesn’t wonder what would have happened if things turned out differently in this or that Marvel movie? The animated series What If…? will answer some of those questions, showing us what the MCU would be like if the storylines went another way.

  1. One of the best things about What If…? is that many of the original actors are returning to voice their characters. If someone like, say, Robert Downey Jr. wanted to come back and play Iron Man again, What If…? makes it possible. Hollywood stars seem to enjoy lending their voices to animated projects because they can be recorded close to home, making them easy to work into busy schedules.
  2. Stories from across the MCU are open for reinterpretation, before and after the Blip. That one moment was so pivotal for MCU characters…but what if it didn’t happen? What if it had been the original Avengers who disappeared? What if Thanos was an Avenger? You never know what kind of stories could spin out of one little change.
  3. One of the stories teased is about what would happen if Peggy Carter was turned into a super soldier instead of Steve Rogers. Exploring these stories, both in the past and the present, is tantalizing, and through the power of animation it’s entirely possible to tell a wild, effects-heavy story with ease.

Hawkeye

Release Date: Late 2021

Cast: Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Fra Free, Tony Dalton

Hawkeye has never had the same amount of screen time as the other members of the Avengers, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a story of his own to tell.

  1. Fans have always wanted to see more of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, particularly after he became the vengeful Ronin following the Blip. The Hawkeye series could be a chance to dive into the gap between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and how Clint Barton dealt with the loss of everyone he loved.
  2. Hailee Steinfeld will star as Kate Bishop, a talented archer who follows in Clint’s footsteps. With Natasha Romanoff out of the picture, it will be nice to see Clint with a crimefighting partner again.
  3. In this show, Clint Barton will be dealing with hearing loss. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the challenge of not being able to rely on his hearing. Clint won’t be the only member of the MCU with hearing issues, as Lauren Ridloff’s character in Eternals is also deaf. This is yet another step that Marvel is taking to make the MCU a more inclusive place. That includes not depicting physical and mental challenges as disabilities or hardships but as things that make characters special and even more powerful.

Ms. Marvel

Release Date: Late 2021

Cast: Iman Vellani, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Matt Lintz

Ms. Marvel is about to become the latest phenom in the MCU, but before she takes off in a feature film, fans will get to know her in her own TV series.

  1. Ms. Marvel could easily become one of the most relatable characters in the MCU. Iman Vellani is perfect as the Pakistani-American teenager who goes from writing fan fiction to inheriting superpowers. Seeing her explore the complexities of navigating life as a superhero is something we need.
  2. Vellani’s story will play into Captain Marvel 2, where she will team up with Brie Lason’s Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau. Look for lots of Easter eggs that lead into the movie!
  3. Ms. Marvel is a huge step forward for representation, and there will be lots of new fans who arrive in the MCU for her debut. Thankfully, Ms. Marvel starts out as a teenager, so there’s lots of time to watch her grow. She’s going to make a huge impact in the MCU moving forward.

She-Hulk

Release Date: TBA

Cast: Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth

The Hulk has always been such a lovable character among Marvel fans, and now the big guy’s cousin is about to take center stage.

  1. Marvel fans are about to learn what Orphan Black fans already knew: Tatiana Maslany is amazing. She pulled double, triple, quadruple and quintuple duty on Orphan Black, a show about a group of clones fighting for their lives. Some actors might struggle with bringing multiple roles to life at a time, but Maslany embraced it. There’s nothing she can’t do. She will have no problem doing double duty as attorney Jennifer Walters and her alter ego She-Hulk.
  2. Jennifer Walters is a superhero attorney. She steps in to defend Marvel’s superheroes when they violate so-called “superhero law” and the Sokovia Accords, and that means she will have a very colorful group of clients. The series itself will be something of a lighthearted courtroom drama, like Law & Order meets the MCU.
  3. Jennifer becomes She-Hulk after her cousin Bruce Banner gives her a blood transfusion. That means Mark Ruffalo will show up, and that’s a good thing because he’s been a lot more fun since appearing in Thor: Ragnarok.

Moon Knight

Release Date: TBA

Cast: Oscar Issac, May Calamawy

Moon Knight, aka Marc Spector, is a vigilante superhero with dissociative identity disorder. He’s an intriguing character, and this series could just be the beginning for him.

  • Moon Knight has been around since 1975. Over the years, Marc Spector has been in the CIA, in the Marines and was even a boxer for a while. He’s seen too much. He’s on the fringe. While he might not be as well-known as some of the other Avengers, his story will be relatable in many ways.
  • Spector’s struggles with mental health and multiple personalities will be a big step for Marvel. Tony Stark’s PTSD after the events of the first Avengers movie was well-depicted, and there have been glimpses of other characters struggling with mental health in recent years, but Moon Knight takes things to the next level.
  • The show is set to film in Budapest, but Egyptian mythology plays heavily into the story, which is something haven’t seen yet in the MCU. Norse mythology plays heavily in Thor’s story, of course, but the Egyptian mythology offers so much to work with.

Secret Invasion

Release Date: TBA

Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn

Skrulls have been on Earth for a while now, but they might not be the only extraterrestrials in our midst…

  1. Captain Marvel introduced the idea that there were already visitors from other worlds on Earth long before Thor and Loki showed up. Upcoming MCU movie Eternals revolves around the idea that there have been immortals on Earth for a long time, and now there will be a larger focus on the Skrulls, who have been here for a while, too. The show could really deepen MCU mythology.
  2. Any time Nick Fury is on screen is a treat. Samuel L. Jackson deserves every spotlight Marvel can offer him, and playing Nick Fury allows him to play action scenes as well as show off his trademark dry humor. He’s been on the periphery of the MCU for a long while, and it’s past time for him to topline his own story.
  3. Since the Skrulls are shapeshifters, they could be anywhere. What makes Secret Invasion so enticing is that there is no end of the kind of stories that could spin out of Fury’s quest to find them.

Ironheart

Release Date: TBA

Cast: Dominique Thorne

Like Ms. Marvel, Ironheart will introduce us to a whole new hero, following the brilliant Riri Williams as she develops a suit based on Tony Stark’s Iron Man.

  1. STEM classes are important, and having a strong, brilliant character like Riri Williams will give young MCU fans a new hero to celebrate, one who is closer to their own ages. Riri will no doubt inspire some young engineers in the fandom.
  2. Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame, but might there be a way to work him into the series? You have to think that if someone is developing an Iron Man suit from Tony’s designs, there’s a bit of Tony Stark AI out there to help along the way, which would allow for a really cool cameo. It’s possible that Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes could make an appearance, as well.
  3. Ironheart is about a strong young woman, something the MCU needs now that the Avengers have run their course and the Young Avengers are about to take their place. Ironheart could lead the MCU into its next phase.

Armor Wars

Release Date: TBA

Cast: Don Cheadle

Not a lot is known about Armor Wars, but all that matters is that Don Cheadle will reprise his role as James Rhodes, aka War Machine.

  1. The only clue about Armor Wars is that it explores what happens when Tony Stark’s technology falls into the wrong hands. Rhodes knows what that’s like, because his suit was hijacked once upon a time, so if anyone could prevent it from happening (or rescuing tech that has already been lost), it’s Rhodie.
  2. There has always been a question about the ownership of technology like the Iron Man and War Machine suits. Should the military have access to them? Should civilians be able to obtain the technology? What happens when the power of the suits is used for the wrong reasons? This will likely factor into Armor Wars, and Rhodes has been around Stark technology long enough to know and understand both sides.
  3. Armor Wars arrives on Disney+ after Ironheart, which means there is a very good chance Riri Williams could show up as Ironheart. That could make for a great team-up. Rhodie and Tony were a team, and it would be great to have him be a mentor to Riri Williams as she learns more about her own suit.
