It’s no secret among Game of Thrones fans that the show’s final season didn’t live up to the hype. But is the show over for good? Will there be a season 9 of Game of Thrones?

In short, no. Game of Thrones is over. It ended with eight seasons and there are no plans to bring it back.

However, it’s a fair question. The show deviated quite a bit from author George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books, in part because Martin is still writing them. But there’s no indication that they will be brought to life as part of Game of Thrones.

However, Game of Thrones will live on through multiple spin-off projects at HBO in the coming years.

Game of Thrones to give rise to a whole universe

There are several spin-off projects lined up at the moment, starting with House of the Dragon. Set some 170 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the show will focus on House Targaryen at the height of its power, when different factions of the family fought a civil war for the Iron Throne. Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith and Rhys Ifans headline the very talented cast working on the series.

House of the Dragon is set to debut in 2022, and it will be the first of several possible (and as-yet to be confirmed) spin-offs, including 10,000 Ships, Tales of Dunk and Egg, 9 Voyages and Flea Bottom.

Each of the spin-offs is based on some aspect of Martin’s world. Tales of Dunk and Egg will follow Martin’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms novellas while Flea Bottom will explore the poor districts of King’s Landing, where several key characters in the stories were born.

Though Game of Thrones is over, there’s a bright future for the franchise and soon there will be lots of new stories for fans to enjoy. And who knows? Perhaps after Martin finishes the books someone will adapt the series anew.
