Is Game of Thrones over?

For eight seasons, HBO took the world by storm with Game of Thrones, its adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s epic A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series. If you’re waiting for season 9 to arrive on HBO, you’re out of luck: the show is over, but that doesn’t mean the fun is.

Game of Thrones is not over on TV

Game of Thrones was such a success that it was inevitable that HBO would create spinoffs. And indeed, we have at least one on the way: House of the Dragon, a show set some 200 years before the original that tells the tale of a brutal Targaryen civil war.

Will House of the Dragon be as successful as Game of Thrones? We’ll have to wait and see in 2022, but it will scratch that itch. That if it is a hit, HBO has more spinoff ideas beyond that one.

Game of Thrones is not over in books

Also, Martin isn’t done writing the Song of Ice and Fire series; he’s five books in of a planned seven-book cycle. In terms of the show, the books go right up until Jon Snow is killed at the end of season 5. The next three seasons likely adapted what Martin has planned for the final two books…but we can’t be sure. At the least, the details will likely be different.

That said, fans have been waiting for the sixth book in the cycle, The Winds of Winter, for literally a decade, so I’d temper your expectations. Still, whether it’s on the screen or the page, Game of Thrones is over only in name.
