When does House of the Dragon come out?

2022 is set to be a great of a year for fantasy television! Ever since Game of Thrones ended, few things have been able to fill that Iron Throne-shaped hole we all have in our hearts. There was just something about the Starks of Winterfell, about King’s Landing and all the machinations of the Lannisters, about Daenerys Targaryen and her three dragons, that hooked us. I won’t speak for you, but I can’t wait to return to Westeros.

And soon that wait will be over: HBO is taking a crack at its first Westeros spinoff, House of the Dragon. This show is set around 200 years before Game of Thrones, and covers a brutal civil war called the Dance of Dragons where Targaryen fought Targaryen and dragons battled in the skies. It’s going to be epic; there are more dragons during this period than in any other in Westeros’ history. There are brutal deaths, shocking twists, armies and politics and affairs. The book that House of the Dragon is based off, Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, has plenty of the same elements that made Thrones so riveting, so you know this one is going to be good.

In fact, Martin has even seen a rough cut of the first episode of the show, and he “loved it.”

"It’s dark, it’s powerful, it’s visceral…just the way I like my epic fantasy…I think the Targaryens are in very good hands. Anticipate away. I do not think you will be disappointed."

But when is House of the Dragon coming out, exactly? I’d say to mark your calendars…but for what date?

When is House of the Dragon coming out?

The bad news is that HBO hasn’t announced a solid release month or day for House of the Dragon yet, but the network has decreed the show will be out this year. Sometime in 2022 we’ll all be going back to Westeros, albeit a very different Westeros than we saw in Game of Thrones. Even the Iron Throne looks different!

Before the Dance, dragons ruled the skies over Westeros and Targaryen Kings ruled with impunity. Afterward, well…according to Fire & Blood, the might of the Targaryen dynasty was never again to reach the same heights. House of the Dragon is that breaking point, blown up and told over  a few seasons of television. We don’t yet know how many.

The night is long and our watch may only just be beginning…but at least we know that there’s an end in sight. House of the Dragon is coming out in 2022.
