Peacemaker — HBO Max — January 13 (AIRING NOW)

Superman & Lois is the wholesome family superhero show of 2022. This is the other one. James Gunn is behind this HBO Max series about the least wholesome character from The Suicide Squad: Peacemaker, a jingoistic psychopathic meathead who is determined to have peace…even if he has to kill every man, woman and child on the face of the Earth to get it.

It’s a funny premise, and it looks like Gunn is mainly looking to mine a comedic vein here, with a lot of action and some character work thrown in. With his hulking body and sharp comic timing, John Cena is definitely the man for the job. He had charisma to spare in The Suicide Squad and should easily be able to hold down his own series.

Peacemaker will also bring in Robert Patrick as Peacemaker’s cold and distant father, allowing Gunn and Cena to develop the character into something more than just a punchline, although there will be plenty of those. The show kinda-sorta takes place in the DC Extended Universe of movies that includes Wonder WomanAquaman and Justice League, but I wouldn’t expect any crossovers save for a few jokey references, unless Warner Bros. is saving a big surprise for us.

There are eight episodes of Peacemaker in total. The first three dropped on HBO Max on January 13, and the rest will drop one at a time on Thursdays.  — Dan
