14. Danganronpa: The Animation

Danganronpa: The Animation doesn’t have much in common with Attack on Titan plotwise, but it does offer viewers a suspenseful and entertaining horror story with plenty of twists and turns.

Based on the 2010 video game Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, the anime follows a group of 16 students from Hope’s Peak Academy, all of whom find themselves in a waking nightmare: they’ve been locked inside the school and a talking bear has given them orders to kill one another.

In terms of dystopian plots, this one feels similar to stories like The Hunger Games and Battle Royale. But like Attack on Titan, there’s more at play than meets the eye. The students will need to figure out who’s behind their predicament and why they’ve been placed in this situation in the first place. And as one question is answered, another inevitably arises.

If you’re watching the English dubbed version, Danganronpa‘s main character, Makoto Naegi, is also voiced by Bryce Papenbrook — the same actor who brings Eren Yeager to life in Attack on Titan‘s English dub. The two characters may not have much in common, but their stories are both worth checking out.

15. Black Bullet

Black Bullet is among the lesser-known anime on this list, but it has more than a few similarities to Attack on Titan. The most notable is the fact that all of its characters have retreated behind a series of walls. Rather than hiding from Titans, they’ve cut themselves off from an outside world plagued by a virus called Gastrea.

Gastrea turns human beings into parasitic monsters which live beyond the walls. Groups called Initiators and Promoters are sent outside to deal with these creatures. The relationship between the two groups bears a striking resemblance to the dynamic between the Titans and the Survey Corps.

Unfortunately, Black Bullet doesn’t have the same level of depth or development as Attack on Titan — and considering that it’s just one season long, that’s probably to be expected. Still, the two shows have enough in common that it’s worth trying. After all, we’ve got quite a wait until Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 3 arrives.

We don’t have an exact date for that yet, but we know it’s coming in 2023. When Attack on Titan ends, it will cap off a remarkable decade-long journey. But until then, there’s plenty out there to enjoy, here beyond the Walls.
