Only one month remains until House of the Dragon, the long-awaited Game of Thrones prequel series, premieres on HBO and HBO Max. Set roughly 200 years before the original series, House of the Dragon will cover a brutal Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragon, where rival factions of the family tore the realm apart in a dispute over the Iron Throne.

HBO has just released a brand new trailer for the series, filled with dragons and Targaryens and politicking galore. The time to get hype is nigh:

Game of Thrones is a series that redefined the television landscape, so there’s an awful lot of pressure on this successor series to be a worthy follow-up. If the trailer’s any indicator, the show certainly looks gorgeous. But who are the directors that will be bringing this ancient era of Westeros to the small screen? Let’s break it down.

House of the Dragon directors

The showrunners on House of the Dragon are Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik’s name should be familiar to any Thrones fan: he was the director behind many of the original series’ best episodes, including “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards,” “The Winds of Winter,” “The Long Night” and more. Condal is serving as the head writer for the series; he was the creator of Colony, and came personally recommended by George R.R. Martin himself.

One thing Game of Thrones came under criticism for was its lack of diversity, and that’s something that House of the Dragon is actively trying to rectify — both in front of and behind the cameras. The first season of the prequel series features four episodes helmed by female directors, a first for Westeros. In addition to Sapochnik (who will be directing three episodes of the series), Clare Kilner (The Alienist: Angel of Darkness), Geeta V. Patel (The Witcher), and Greg Yaitanes (House) round out the directing staff.

As far as breaking down who’s directing which episodes, IMDb has the following listings:

  • Episode 1: Miguel Sapochnik
  • Episode 2: Greg Yaitanes
  • Episode 3: Greg Yaitanes
  • Episode 4: Clare Kilner
  • Episode 5: Clare Kilner
  • Episode 6: Miguel Sapochnik
  • Episode 7: Miguel Sapochnik
  • Episode 8: Greeta V. Patel
  • Episode 9: Clare Kilner
  • Episode 10: Greg Yaitanes

House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max on August 21. Let the dragons reign!
