The Rings of Power and 4 more disappointing genre shows from 2022
By Dan Selcke
The Witcher: Blood Origin
So far, every show on this list has fallen into the “good but not great” category. The Witcher: Blood Origin is our only trainwreck. From conception to scripting right down to costumes, almost nothing about this show worked. That’s not to crap on the valiant efforts of the cast and crew members who put forth valiant efforts, but they never stood a chance; the show does not congeal.
And given all the problems behind the scenes, that’s no surprise. Originally, this Witcher prequel series was going to be six episodes long, but apparently the producers were so concerned with what they saw that they cut it down to four and shoved in a new framing story that included some Witcher cast members. This is not a sign of a healthy production.
Netflix’s mainline Witcher show is a rickety beast to start with, as evidenced by its star leaving for greener pastures; the streamer would be much better off focusing on making that series as good as possible before giving us pointless spinoffs. And Blood Origin does seem pointless. It’s tangentially tied to the mothership show but plays more like a bog standard D&D campaign wearing a Witcher name tag. Only D&D campaigns are usually more fun and coherent that this.
Netflix has high hopes for The Witcher as a mega franchise, but that’s gonna happen if they lay eggs like this one. I’ll give them the same advice I gave Disney regarding Marvel and Star Wars shows: think less and better, not more for the sake of more.
