The Mandalorian season 4 already written, will tie into other Star Wars shows

Although there’s now some discussion to be had over whether it remains the best, The Mandalorian is the first Star Wars show to air on Disney+ and still the most important. This is where all the Baby Yoda plushies come from. This has the ersatz father-son dynamic to end all ersatz father-son dynamics. This has Luke Skywalker! It’s a big deal.

Season 3 is about to drop on Disney+, but creator Jon Favreau is thinking ahead. “Season 4, yeah I’ve written it already,” he told French outlet BFM TV. “We have to know where we’re going to tell a fully formed story. We had mapped it out, Dave [Filoni] and I, and slowly you start to write each episode. I was writing it during post-production [on season 3]. All of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”

So far, The Mandalorian has told the story of how Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) adopted Grogu, aka Baby Yoda, as his ward. Season 2 ended with Din letting Grogu leave with Luke Skywalker so he could further his Jedi training, but the two reunited on The Book of Boba Fett.

The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew all take place during the same Star Wars time period

And that’s the tricky thing about The Mandalorian; it doesn’t exist just for itself, but also to provide an anchor for a wider Star Wars TV Universe that Disney is building out. There’s a whole lot of Star Wars stuff on the way, and Favreau is writing The Mandalorian so that it interlocks with all of it.

“[Dave’s] doing ‘Ahsoka,’ which I’m producing with him. He’s the writer and showrunner on that. To understand what’s happening on other shows….‘Skeleton Crew’ all take place within the same ‘Star Wars’ time period,” Favreau said. “There’s a lot more things that we’ve got to keep in mind and also stuff that we’ve built up to from previous seasons of ‘The Mandalorian’ as well.”

Ahsoka will be all about the ex-Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), who was introduced in live-action form in the second season of The Mandalorian. Skeleton Crew will star Jude Law and be more focused on younger fans. There’s also The Acolyte, which probably won’t tie into the other Star Wars shows because it’s set in the past…but you never know.

Personally, I would have preferred that The Mandalorian stay on its one track and tell a consistent story without bleeding out into other shows, but Disney has chosen its path. We’ll see where that path leads next week Wednesday.
