The first Joker movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime, was a monster hit when it came out in 2019, taking in over a billion dollars on a budget of $55 million. A sequel was inevitable. Enter Joker: Folie à Deux.

The Joker sequel is due out next year and will star Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s long-time love interest and assistant, a killer clown in her own right who is fanatically devoted to her boss. We recently got our first look at Gaga in costume on set:

I like the costuming here; they’ve taken Harley’s harlequin costume from the comics and made it look like something you could realistically wear as a normal outfit, albeit one that would probably raise a few eyebrows. A fashionable person who shops at Hot Topic could plausibly wear this.

We don’t have firm info on the story of Folie à Deux, but odds are that it will adapt Mad Love, an Eisner-winning comic written by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm for DC Comics. Harley Quinn begins her supervillain career as Harleen Quinzel, a therapist at Arkham Asylum. That’s where she meets the Joker and falls in love, for better or worse (mostly worse).

For a character introduced late into the Batman mythos, Harley Quinn has proven incredibly popular. Margot Robbie has already played her on the big screen and Kaley Cuoco plays her in the animated Harley Quinn show on HBO Max. And who knows whether Folie à Deux could produce a sequel?

By the way, word is that Folie à Deux is a musical, which makes Lady Gaga uniquely suited. The movie is due out on October 4, 2024.
