Is Rebel Moon Star Wars?
By WiC Staff
Zack Snyder’s new movie Rebel Moon started life as a pitch for a Star Wars movie, but it is NOT itself a Star Wars movie, despite the similarities.
Zack Snyder, the director behind movies like 300, Dawn of the Dead and Justice League, has a new one coming up: Rebel Moon, about a group of farmers and other working people living on the moon of Veldt. Veldt is a minor outpost in a vast galactic empire ruled over by the Imperium, a tyrannical galactic empire known for its callousness and cruelty. Eventually, the people of Veldt have had enough and mount a rebellion.
If words like “rebels,” “galaxy,” and “empire” make you think of Star Wars, that’s no accident. While Rebel Moon has nothing to do with the Star Wars franchise, Snyder originally pitched the idea to Lucasfilm as a new Star Wars movie. Lucasfilm passed, but Snyder held onto the idea, eventually turning it into Rebel Moon and selling it to Netflix.
Netflix hopes to turn Rebel Moon into a franchise. They’re making two movies right off the bat: the first part comes out on December 22, 2023, but that will only tell half the story. We don’t know when the second part is coming, but Snyder doesn’t think we’ll have to wait long between entries.
Beyond that, who knows? If Rebel Moon is a bit hit, maybe Netflix could have its own Star Wars killer on its hands.
