War has broken out in the Seven Kingdoms! Two branches of the Targaryen family are at odds, and everyone is choosing sides.

That’s what we’ll be seeing in the second season of House of the Dragon, based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. At the risk of spoiling things slightly, House Lannister joins the greens, the faction loyal to King Aegon II Targaryen. Aegon is fighting his half-sister Rhaenyra Targaryen for the Iron Throne; her followers are known as the blacks.

Twitter’s own @UnBoxPHD has been sharing plenty of behind-the-scenes looks at filming lately, including some videos of the Lannister cavalry in action. Take a look!

Jason Lannister rides again in House of the Dragon season 2

The Lannisters aren’t featured as prominently on House of the Dragon as they were on Game of Thrones, but we’ve met a couple, namely twin brothers Jason and Tyland Lannister, both played by actor Jefferson Hall. Tyland Lannister is currently on the Small Council for King Aegon in King’s Landing, while his brother Jason is minding things at Casterly Rock. You may remember Jason Lannister trying to make a move on Rhaenyra in the third episode of the show, “Second of His Name.”

Ugh, no matter the time period, Lannisters are always slimy.

Anyway, Jefferson Hall was on set as Jason in this new season 2 scene, which is being filmed near the hill fort of Caesar’s Camp in southern England. You can see him in this video:

Lannister armor gets a makeover in House of the Dragon season 2

As for the costumes, the armor looks great, and a bit different from what we’re used to from Game of Thrones. The new Lannister armor (or rather the old Lannister armor, since House of the Dragon is a prequel series) looks a little bit plainer than what Jaime Lannister was rocking in the original series.

For comparison’s sake, here’s the House of the Dragon armor (click to view)…

I like the plainer look; the Lannister armor always looked a tad too ornate for me on Game of Thrones, not that it wasn’t pleasing to the eye.

Another positive development: the Lannister soldiers wear helmets that actually cover parts of their faces now! Game of Thrones got criticized for having helmets that looked neat but didn’t bear much resemblance to what people actually wore in medieval times, in large part because the faces weren’t covered. That was probably so we, as television audiences, can see the faces of the actors, which makes sense, but also it looked silly at times:

What is the Lannister army up to in House of the Dragon season 2?

And now we come to the final question: what are the Lannisters doing in this scene? Will we see a battle of some kind?

The Lannister army is involved in a few battles during the Dance of the Dragons, including the the Battle at the Red Fork and the Battle by the Lakeshore, more commonly known as the Fishfeed. But both of those battles occur a bit later in the story; I doubt we’ll be seeing them in season 2, unless they get moved up.

More immediately, we’ll have the Battle at Rook’s Rest to look forward to. The Lannisters weren’t involved in that one in Fire & Blood, but maybe the show will rewrite things a bit so they will be. Also, just because there are soldiers milling around doesn’t necessarily mean this is a battle scene; perhaps we’re just catching up with the Lannister army on the move.

According to Redanian Intelligence, these videos show House Lannister meeting up with House Lefford, a smaller house sword to the Lannisters. We’ll keep an eye out for further developments.
