5. The Orville

Finally, we have one of the best sci-fi shows to come out in the past several years, a space epic more Star Trek than most of the actual Star Trek series over on Paramount+. The Orville started life on Fox before switching to Hulu for its most recent third season, now subtitled New Horizons. Each season, The Orville got more ambitious and spectacular, edging away from the sitcom-in-space format of its early episodes into an optimistic brand of futurism driven by heady ideas, gripping drama and likable characters. And it still throws some jokes in there to lighten the mood. And although The Orville has running story arcs, its episodes are built to stand more or less on their own, which is a refreshing change of pace in today’s serialization-happy world.

The season 3 finale didn’t end on a cliffhanger, but there remain plenty of things to resolve. The show could end there, but fans badly want to see more. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know if Disney — which owns Hulu — will bring the show back. “We’re all in the loop and out of the loop,” said cast member Chad L. Coleman earlier this year. “We think it’s gonna happen, but it’s still up in the air.” Renewal couldn’t happen to a nicer show.

Any other underseen genre shows you’d like to recommend? Maybe this article will be the push they need to get over that hill.
