Avatar: The Last Airbender: Every confirmed change to Netflix's remake
8. Aang won't enter the Avatar state as much
The Avatar state is the ability for an Avatar to channel his/her past lives and utilize their abilities without having learned them. Aang going into the Avatar state is one of the most iconic visuals from the Nickelodeon show; Aang's eyes and tattoos glow with power, which happens quite a few times throughout the three seasons.
However, Albert Kim has confirmed that the live-action version of the show won't feature as much of the Avatar state, in order to make it feel "more special" when it does happen. I'm a little conflicted on this change because I think it's pretty darn special every time it happens in the animated series. I'm thinking this change may have been more of a budget thing. That's obviously just speculation, but Kim certainly sounded like he was tempering expectations when he discussed it:
"We wanted to make it very clear that Aang could only access that state in a specific set of circumstances. We actually tweaked the rules a little bit form the original series as to when and how he can access that state, but that's part of doing an adaptation like this."
I'm trying not to judge this one too much because I get that not everything will be a direct carry-over, I'm just hoping the change will be justified from a narrative standpoint. And those few times that Aang does use the Avatar state better be pretty freaking amazing.
