Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed Fallout, its new sci-fi show based on the video game series from Bethesda Softworks, for a second season, according to Deadline. The good news comes just barely a week after the first season dropped in its entirety last Wednesday, April 10. Apparently viewership was stellar; Fallout was among the top three highest viewed shows in the history of the streaming service. We're not surprised at all, considering that it was: 1) Based on a popular, preexisting brand, and; 2) Was awesome.

Obviously, showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner were pleased. “Holy sh*t," they said in a statement. "Thank you to [producer Jonathan Nolan], [Kilter Films], Bethesda and Amazon for having the courage to make a show that gravely tackles all of society’s most serious problems these days — cannibalism, incest, jello cake. More to come!”

The first season of Fallout took us to the wasteland, a post-apocalyptic, irraditaed hellscape that the naive Lucy (Ella Purnell) had to explore after living her whole life in a luxery vault. I got attached Lucy and the other characters pretty quick and am eager to see where her journey of discovery takes her next.

Fallout season 2: Full speed ahead to New Vegas

If you watched the first season of Fallout, you know it ended with (beware SPOILERS incoming) Lucy's father Hank MacLean (Kyle MacLachlan) heading to the town of New Vegas, which was prominently featured in the extremely popular game Fallout: New Vegas from 2010. The wasteland may be a brutal place to live, but New Vegas has thrived under the guidance of Robert House, whom the showrunners made sure to include in a cameo in the season 1 finale. Expect to see more of Mr. House in Fallout season 2.

We don't have a release date for Fallout season 2 as of yet, but I regret to inform you that we'll probably be waiting for a while. This is a big, complicated, great-looking show, and it will take a while to crank out another batch of high-quality episodes. Even with Amazon renewing the show for a second season so soon after the first, I wouldn't bet on seeing season 2 until 2026.

Then again, it looks like Amazon has quietly laid track for a second season already, as the show was already offered a $25 million tax credit from the California Film Commission in order to woo the production from New York to California. With moves like that already on the books, hopefully it means that production on season 2 can start up relatively quickly. The sooner we all return to the wasteland, the better.
